Wagaman batted .250 with 28 doubles, nine home runs and 53 RBIs in 140 games as a rookie last season for the Marlins, finishing strong with a team-leading .328 average over 61 at-bats during the month of September. The 28-year-old Wagaman started 94 games at first base and 13 games in left field in 2025, after appearing in 18 games with the Los Angeles Angels in his debut in 2024.

Drafted in the 13th round in 2017 by the New York Yankees, Wagaman was designated for assignment earlier this week by the Marlins. He’ll provide the Twins more potential depth at first base along with Kody Clemens behind veteran Josh Bell, who signed a one-year, $7 million contract last month.

The Twins also designated infielder Ryan Fitzgerald for assignment to make room on their 40-man roster for Wagaman.

The 24-year-old Bragg was a 17th-round draft pick by the Twins in 2023. He finished last season with Double-A Wichita.

Miami Marlins partner with Feeding South Florida to deliver meals for Thanksgiving https://wsvn.com/sports/miami-marlins/miami-marlins-partner-with-feeding-south-florida-to-deliver-meals-for-thanksgiving/ Sat, 22 Nov 2025 00:08:16 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1644359 It may be the offseason but the Marlins made sure to step up to the plate for the season of giving, handing out Thanksgiving meals to families in need at loanDepot Park.

The Marlins organization teamed up with Feeding South Florida and Tito’s Vodka to distribute meals to more than 1,000 families from Little Havana.

“Being able to just hand out food and, I don’t know who said it on stage, but just, you know, no hungry kids at nighttime, it feels good to be part of something like that,” said Marlins pitcher Anthony Bender.

Each family received a gift bag filled with roughly 15 pounds of food, including a 10-pound turkey for the holiday.

“So many people don’t have food and stuff, you know, and nobody to give to them, they live by themselves, they’re elderly like me and other people, and they don’t have nobody to turn to,” said one woman picking up food. “Joy to us.”

“Thank God for them helping the community, I appreciate it,” said a woman.

As music filled the air, the event helped bring relief, warmth and holiday cheer to those in the community who need it most.

“Putting smiles on people’s faces is one of the most rewarding things you can do, and so that’s what giving back is all about,” said Marlins manager Claytin McCullough.

Several families left the park with more than just smiles as they brought home a warm holiday meal to put together and a heart full of gratitude.

“It means so much because one time last Thanksgiving we didn’t have anything at all, like, to the point that me and my mom lived in a hotel, we didn’t have no Thanksgiving so it makes me want to cry,” said one woman picking up food.

Miami Marlins promote Gabe Kapler to general manager amid several front office moves https://wsvn.com/sports/miami-marlins/miami-marlins-promote-gabe-kapler-to-general-manager-amid-several-front-office-moves/ Mon, 03 Nov 2025 19:43:32 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1637962 MIAMI (AP) — The Miami Marlins promoted Gabe Kapler to general manager on Monday amid a series of front office moves, the team announced.

Additionally, Frankie Piliere was promoted to vice president of amateur forecasting and player evaluation initiatives, and Vinesh Kanthan was moved to senior director of baseball operations.

Kapler will be the club’s sixth general manager after beginning his tenure with the Marlins in 2024 as an assistant GM focusing on player, coaching and staff development.

This past season, the Marlins’ minor league system made club history with four different affiliates reaching the postseason at their respective levels. That includes Jacksonville, which claimed the Triple-A National Championship.

Kapler spent the previous six seasons as a manager with Philadelphia (2018-19) and San Francisco (2020-23). The Los Angeles-native was also the World Series champion Dodgers’ director of player development from 2015-17, during which he worked with Marlins manager Clayton McCullough.

Miami outperformed many expectations in McCullough’s first season, going 79-83. The Marlins had an over/under of 62 1/2 wins before the season, according to BetMGM Sportsbook. Their 16 1/2-win overperformance was the best in baseball, and they won 13 of their final 17 games.

“It is an exciting time to be part of the Marlins organization, and I am ready to continue the great work we are doing here, alongside Peter (Marlins president of baseball operations Peter Bendix) and our entire Baseball Operations staff,” Kapler said in a statement. “The growth and momentum we’ve built are a direct reflection of a clear vision, a strong culture, and an incredible team working together toward a shared goal. I’m proud to help continue that progress and contribute to what’s ahead.”

Piliere joined the Marlins as director of amateur scouting, overseeing the club’s amateur scouts and draft. And Kanthan, before coming to Miami, spent five seasons with the Texas Rangers organization.

Cabrera pitches Marlins past Mets 4-0 to eliminate New York from playoff field https://wsvn.com/sports/miami-marlins/cabrera-pitches-marlins-past-mets-4-0-to-eliminate-new-york-from-playoff-field/ Mon, 29 Sep 2025 02:46:25 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1627055 MIAMI (AP) — Edward Cabrera tossed five innings of two-hit ball and the Miami Marlins used a four-run fourth to beat the Mets 4-0 in their regular-season finale Sunday, preventing New York from making the playoffs.

The Mets (83-79) needed a win and a Cincinnati loss at Milwaukee to reach the postseason. The Reds (83-79) lost 4-2 to the Brewers but took the final National League wild card on a head-to-head tiebreaker after winning the season series against New York.

Cabrera (8-7) struck out seven and walked five.

Mets starter Sean Manaea fanned three in 1 2/3 hitless innings. But with little margin for error, manager Carlos Mendoza pulled Manaea following his second walk in the second, and reliever Huascar Brazobán got out of the inning.

Connor Norby began the Miami fourth with a single off reliever Brooks Raley (3-1).

Raley was replaced by Ryne Stanek — already the fourth Mets pitcher — and he gave up a run-scoring double to Eric Wagaman that put the Marlins on the board. Brian Navarreto hit another RBI double, followed by a run-scoring triple from Javier Sanoja and an RBI single by Xavier Edwards off Tyler Rogers.

The Mets used eight pitchers, including closer Edwin Díaz, who pitched scoreless innings in the fifth and sixth.

Francisco Lindor doubled in the seventh for one of five Mets hits, but New York went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10 overall. The season ended when Lindor grounded into a game-ending double play.

The Marlins won the season series from their division rivals, 7-6.

Key moment

The Mets loaded the bases with three walks in the fifth before Pete Alonso came up with two outs. He lined out to left field on a ball that left his bat at 116 mph.

Key stat

The Mets were a major league-best 45-24 through June 12 but went 38-55 the rest of the season.

The Mets remained tied with Cincinnati for the last National League wild card at 83-78. The Reds beat NL Central champion Milwaukee 7-4.

Because the Reds hold the head-to-head tiebreaker, New York needs a win Sunday and a Cincinnati loss at Milwaukee to reach the postseason.

Holmes (12-8) allowed one hit over six innings with three walks and a strikeout. Brooks Raley and Tyler Rogers each worked a perfect inning before Edwin Díaz got three outs to end it.

Alonso put the Mets ahead 1-0 with his NL-leading 41st double against Eury Pérez (7-6) in the first inning. The All-Star first baseman then doubled New York’s lead with a solo shot to left-center in the third, his 38th home run of the season.

Alonso reached base a third time when he drew a leadoff walk in the sixth and scored on Jeff McNeil’s double that made it 3-0.

Pérez struck out a career-high 11 batters while allowing three runs and three hits in 5 1/3 innings.

The Mets added two runs in the ninth on Francisco Lindor’s RBI single and a wild pitch by reliever George Soriano that allowed Tyrone Taylor to score.

Xavier Edwards singled in the third for Miami’s only hit.

Key moment

Trailing by two runs, the Marlins drew consecutive two-out walks in the fifth against Holmes, but he got Edwards to ground out to escape the threat.

The Mets dropped out of the third NL wild-card position when Cincinnati beat Milwaukee later Friday. The Reds pulled into a tie with the Mets in the standings, but hold the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Xavier Edwards had three hits and Otto López doubled and singled for the Marlins.

Alcantara (11-12) settled down after allowing Francisco Lindor’s game-starting homer and Pete Alonso’s RBI double in the first. The 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner allowed six hits through the first three innings then retired 10 straight before Lindor walked to lead off the eighth that ended his outing.

The Marlins chased Mets starter Brandon Sproat (0-2) during a six-run fifth that erased a 2-0 deficit. Heriberto Hernández hit a two-run triple and scored on Jakob Marsee’s RBI groundout. Xavier Edwards hit an RBI single and Norby’s two-run, pinch-hit homer off reliever Gregory Soto capped the outburst.

Cade Gibson relieved Alcantara and got the first two outs in the eighth. Tyler Phillips closed with the four-out save after the Mets loaded the bases in the eighth.

Lindor’s first inning homer was his 11th leadoff blast of the season and 31st of his career.

Sproat gave up four runs and five hits over 4 2/3 innings. It was Sproat’s fourth career start since being called up from Triple-A on Sept. 7.

Mets third baseman Brett Baty exited the game in the second inning because side soreness.

Key moment

Javier Sanoja had three hits and Lake Bachar (7-2) tossed two shutout innings in relief of Ryan Weathers for Miami, which has won six of its last seven and handed Colorado its 21st lost in the last 25 games.

Mickey Moniak hit his 23rd home run for the Rockies (41-111), who need one win in their last 10 games to avoid matching the 2024 Chicago White Sox for the most losses for a season in the modern era.

Colorado needs two victories to surpass the 1962 New York Mets, who had the fewest wins by an NL team.

The Rockies took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single. Miami scored a run in the third and two more in the fourth to go ahead, 3-2, but Jordan Beck’s RBI single in the bottom of the inning tied it.

Ramírez had a sacrifice fly in the sixth off Jaden Hill (1-1) and Heriberto Hernández added another sacrifice fly in the seventh. Ramírez hit a two-run homer to left field in the eighth — his 21st of the season — and Joey Wiemer had a pinch-hit RBI single in the ninth.

The start of the game was delayed by 40 minutes due to inclement weather.

Tigers beat Marlins 2-0 and tie for lead with 17th shutout https://wsvn.com/sports/miami-marlins/tigers-beat-marlins-2-0-and-tie-for-lead-with-17th-shutout/ Mon, 15 Sep 2025 04:35:53 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1617068 MIAMI (AP) — José Urquidy got four outs in his return from Tommy John surgery, combining with three other pitchers to lead Detroit over the Miami Marlins 2-0 Sunday as the Tigers tied Pittsburgh for the major league lead with their 17th shutout this season.

Detroit took advantage of three errors by Miami on a single ball in the second inning, scoring both runs and going on to stop a three-game losing streak.

Urquidy, a 30-year-old right-hander, had Tommy John surgery for the second time in June 2024 and signed a $1 million, one-year contract with the Tigers in March following five seasons with Houston.

He relieved Keider Montero (5-3) started the sixth and worked around Agustín Ramírez’s two-out single. Eric Wagaman singled leading off the seventh and Tommy Kahnle followed with one out. Urquidy threw 25 pitches, averaging 93 mph with his fastball.

Wil Vest followed Kahnle, who got five outs, and finished for his 21st save in 27 chances. After a single and walk put two on with out out, Vest retired Joey Wiener on a flyout and fell behind Javier Sanoja 3-1 before throwing a pair of called strikes with fastballs at the outside corner.

AL Central-leading Detroit, closing on its first division title since 2014, was outhit 7-4.

Montero allowed three hits in five innings.

Miami made three errors in the second as Detroit scored twice. With Spencer Torkelson on first, Colt Keith’s grounder to first went off Wagaman for the first error. Second baseman Máximo Acosta retrieved the ball in foul territory and threw wildly past third.

Left fielder Troy Johnston tried to run down the ball but it bounced off a fence, through his legs and past as Keith reached third. Keith scored on Dillon Dingler’s single.

Tigers shortstop Javier Báez left after he fouled off a pitch that struck near his left eye during an at-bat in the second inning. Báez swung at a 90 mph changeup from Alcantara and the ball first deflected off the brim of his helmet before making contact near his eye.

Rookie Agustín Ramírez, Heriberto Hernández and Joey Wiemer homered for the Marlins, who won their third straight.

Dad and young fan speak out after woman stole home run ball during Phillies and Marlins game https://wsvn.com/sports/dad-and-young-fan-speak-out-after-woman-stole-home-run-ball-during-phillies-and-marlins-game/ Mon, 08 Sep 2025 14:14:44 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1612939 A boy and his father are sharing their story from the stands when a Major League Baseball game took a backseat to a fan dispute during the fourth inning.

It all happened when the Miami Marlins faced the Philadelphia Phillies Friday night at LoanDepot Park.

Harrison Bader crushed a home run into the left field stands for the Phillies.

The father and son sat down with NBC Philadelphia to speak out about the viral moment.

“It went into that seat and kind of jumbled around, and I was already, you know, going in and coincidentally as soon as I was going in it stopped in one spot and I just picked it up and the guy in the Eagle shirt and, I guess, her hands came right in like half a second after me,” said Drew Feltwell.

The camera followed Drew Feltwell back to his seat, who tossed the baseball to his son before the two shared a hug.

The family was visiting from West Palm Beach for Drew’s son Lincoln’s tenth birthday.

That’s when the woman stormed over to the duo and things got rowdy.

“I didn’t even see her walk up, and as she reached for my arm she just yelled in my ear ‘That’s my ball,'” said Drew.

That’s when the woman, who the internet has dubbed ‘Phillies Karen’, demanded the ball, Drew recalls.

“When she screamed in my ear that’s when everybody saw how shocked I was,” said Drew. “I guess she just thought that was her ball because it was in front of her.”

While the conversation did not have subtitles it seems safe to assume she wanted the ball and felt it belonged to her.

“She had many, many inappropriate words to say around my kids and all I could think was make her go away,” said Drew.

All dad could think about was how to de-escalate the situation, taking the ball in question back from his son and handing it to the woman.

“That was what we were there for, we were there to get a home run ball so I though I had accomplished this great thing,” said Drew.

The woman, ball in-hand, stormed back to her seat.

“When we had to give the ball to her I wasn’t very happy but it had to be done to get her to go away,” said Lincoln.

Fans couldn’t believe their eyes.

“The ‘boos’ started and they were very intense, she’s going to pay for that but it’s not by my hand,” said Drew.

Later in the game Marlins staff stopped in the stands to give Lincoln a goodie bag full of gear.

After the game, the Phillies organization set up a meet and great with the Phillies star who hit the homer too.

The center-fielder gave Lincoln a gift pack and his own signed bat.

“What he gets a gift bag, it was a Marlins employee,” said a sports broadcaster.

“At the end I ended up being happy, I got to see Bader,” said Lincoln.

A similar sight at a Mets game where one fan wrestled the ball away from and older man, swiping the memorabilia and heading back to his seat.

A week before that, a signed hat was snatched out of the hands of a young fan at the US Open.

The moment captured on video highlights a trend of bad behavior at sporting events, though locals still express disdain at this situation.

“That lady was disgusting,” said a Marlins fan.

Others tried to justify the behavior before finishing the rest of the video.

“I thought it was messed up, I even looked to see if she went back to, like, a kid, to give it back to someone who was with her, but she didn’t so I thought it was not nice,” said another fan.

As for the case at Friday night’s Marlins game, the woman’s identity remains unconfirmed.

Phillies and Marlins rally around young fan after woman confronts his father to get home run ball https://wsvn.com/sports/miami-marlins/phillies-and-marlins-rally-around-young-fan-after-woman-confronts-his-father-to-get-home-run-ball/ Sat, 06 Sep 2025 03:48:31 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1610345 (CNN) — It was an ordinary night at LoanDepot Park where the Miami Marlins hosted the division rivals Philadelphia Phillies.

Until it wasn’t.

The Phils held a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning when outfielder Harrison Bader blasted a solo home run into the left field stands to extend the team’s lead.

This is where things get a little interesting.

The NBC Sports Philadelphia broadcast showed a father retrieve the ball and bring it back to his young son, when all of a sudden an unidentified woman comes out of nowhere and confronted the duo.

The father had a shocked look on his face as the woman, who was seated the row behind where he had retrieved the ball, continued to argue with him.

After some back-and-forth, the man took the ball from his son’s glove, handed it over to the woman and shooed her away.

It did have a happy ending for the young fan however, despite both him and his father being decked out in Phillies gear.

The incident drew the ire of both the Phillies and Marlins game broadcasts as well as social media. The Marlins confirmed to CNN the son received a Miami goodie bag and a baseball for him to keep.

On top of that, Bader met the young fan after the game and gave him a signed bat.

The Phillies went on to win 9-3.

The Phillies went deep four times, including solo shots from Max Kepler and Harrison Bader. Every Phillies starter had at least one hit, and they finished with 16 total.

Trea Turner went 4 for 5, his second time recording four hits against the Marlins this season.

Cristopher Sánchez (12-5) pitched seven effective innings, allowing one run on six hits while striking out five and walking one. Tanner Banks relieved Sánchez in the eighth.

Stott broke the game open in the seventh when he lined a shot into the Phillies’ bullpen against reliever George Soriano to make it 9-1.

Brian Navarreto, an eighth-inning defensive replacement, pulled the Marlins within 9-3 with his first career home run, a two-run drive to center against Banks.

Kepler hit a solo shot into the second deck off Marlins starter Valente Bellozo (1-4) in the second. Marsh drilled a 420-foot, two-run shot to left-center off reliever Lake Bachar in the fourth, and Bader went deep in the next at-bat to put Philadelphia ahead 5-1.

NL homer run-leader Kyle Schwarber (49) singled twice. He hasn’t homered in the seven games since his four-home run outing against Atlanta on Aug. 28.

Javier Sanoja hit an RBI double in the third, Miami’s only run scored against Sánchez.

Bellozo allowed two runs and four hits in three innings, striking out two.

Key moment

Bachar replaced Bellozo in the third with the Marlins trailing 2-1, but gave up three straight hits — including the homers by Marsh and Bader — as Philadelphia extended its lead.

It was only the second three-game sweep this season for Washington, which took three at Baltimore from May 15-17. The Nationals’ last three-game sweep at home was July 19-21, 2024, against Cincinnati.

Brady House also went deep for Washington, and Luis García Jr. had two RBIs. Jackson Rutledge (3-2) pitched a scoreless inning for the win.

Joey Wiemer homered for Miami, which was swept for the fourth time this season and the first time since June 2-4 against Colorado.

Nuñez, who spent all of last season on Washington’s roster as a Rule 5 pick, had three hits and four RBIs in his 75th career game.

He hit a one-out drive off Eury Pérez (6-5) into Washington’s bullpen in right in the second. He also singled home a run in the sixth and connected for a two-run shot in the eighth off Luarbert Arias.

House hit a two-run shot in the fourth to make it 7-0. It was the rookie’s first homer since July 12.

Wiemer hit a two-run homer in the fifth, and Heriberto Hernández chased Washington starter Mitchell Parker with a two-run single. Parker allowed four runs — two earned — in 4 2/3 innings.

Key moment

Replay determined that Miami’s Connor Norby wasn’t hit by a pitch in the fifth. Instead, the ball went off the knob of his bat and Washington turned the play into an inning-ending groundout, stranding two runners.

Key stat

Washington’s bullpen did not allow an earned run in 4 1/3 innings, lowering its ERA in 14 games since Aug. 20 to 1.60.

Wood hits 2-run home run as Nationals ride opposite-field hitting to 5-2 win over Marlins https://wsvn.com/sports/miami-marlins/wood-hits-2-run-home-run-as-nationals-ride-opposite-field-hitting-to-5-2-win-over-marlins/ Wed, 03 Sep 2025 01:35:53 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1608741 WASHINGTON (AP) — James Wood hit a two-run home run, rookie Daylen Lile drove in a run and scored another, and the Washington Nationals beat the Miami Marlins 5-2 on Tuesday night.

Lile hit a bloop double in the second and an RBI single in the third. Lile scored on Riley Adams’ double after his own double.

Adams scored on an opposite-field single from Jacob Young. Adams knocked the ball out of the glove of Marlins third baseman Connor Norby on a tag attempt to reach third base on the prior play.

In the fourth, Wood drove home Young with his 27th home run of the season.

Young was removed from the game in the top of the sixth inning with back spasms. He was replaced in center field by Robert Hassell III.

Adam Mazur (0-2) gave up 10 hits and five runs, but finished six innings for Miami. The Marlins used five pitchers in the 2-0 loss to open the series on Monday night.

Jose A. Ferrer earned his sixth save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning to secure the series win. He was the fifth Nationals reliever after five innings of two-run baseball from starter Cade Cavalli (2-1).

Key moment

Norby’s failure to tag Adams out at third base allowed the latter to score on Young’s ensuing single, giving the Nationals an early 3-0 lead.

A 26-year-old left-hander selected in the 12th round of the 2021 amateur draft, Alvarez allowed his only hit when Victor Mesa Jr. singled to left with one out in the fifth. He struck out four and walked two, throwing 44 of 81 pitches for strikes. Alvarez (1-0) averaged 91.8 mph with 22 fastballs and also threw 27 sliders, 21 curveballs, six sinkers and five changeups.

Alvarez joined Mitchell Parker in 2024 as the only Nationals starters to win their major league debuts since Stephen Strasburg in 2010.

Alvarez and catcher CJ Stubbs were the first batterymates each making their major league debut Pittsburgh’s Quinn Preister and Endy Rodriguez on July 17, 2023. They became the first for the Nationals since Shairon Martis and Luke Montz on Sept. 4, 2008, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Four relievers finished a two-hitter, with Jose A. Ferrer working around a walk in the ninth inning for his fifth save in seven chances. Washington relievers have pitched 13 scoreless innings over three games.

Miami was shut out for the eighth time this season but first since July 10.

In the bottom of the first against Eury Pérez (6-4), Juan Soto hit a two-run homer and Brandon Nimmo had a three-run shot before an out was recorded.

Nimmo hit a two-run double in the first and Alonso launched a two-run homer in the fifth, tying it 4 with his 30th longball this season. But the Mets made three errors in all that led to five unearned runs, halting their momentum following a three-game sweep of NL East-leading Philadelphia.

Otto López had a pair of RBI singles for the Marlins (63-71), who bounced back in the opener of a four-game series after getting outscored 23-3 at home by the Braves over the previous two days.

Atlanta star Ronald Acuña Jr. walked four times and was hit by a pitch, leading to the ejection of manager Brian Snitker.

Braves starter Joey Wentz (3-3) permitted one run and five hits in 6 2/3 innings.

After winning six consecutive series to get to 55-55 on Aug. 3, the Marlins (62-71) lost their seventh straight series.

Olson hit a two-run homer and Albies added a three-run drive against Ryan Gusto in the third. It was Albies’ third homer of the series after he hit two on Tuesday.

Profar put the Braves in front when he connected on Gusto’s second pitch of the game.

Snitker was tossed after Gusto (7-7) plunked Acuña with the first pitch following Olson’s homer. An angry Acuña took a couple of steps toward the mound before heading to first.

Heriberto Hernández had three hits and two RBIs and Troy Johnston singled twice for the Marlins, who avoided a three-game series sweep.

Alcántara (7-11) scattered five hits and struck out a season-high nine. It was the 29-year-old right-hander’s third outing of the season that lasted seven innings.

Acosta, who was hitless in eight at-bats since being called up Monday, hit a fastball from Cardinals starter Andre Pallante 418 feet over the wall in center in the sixth inning to increase Miami’s lead to 5-2.

The Cardinals had cut their deficit to 4-2 in the top of the inning Willson Contreras’ solo homer, his 17th.

Hernández scored from third on a double-play groundout in the second, and gave the Marlins a 3-0 lead with a two-run single in the third.
