The Canes will take on the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Cotton Bowl Classic, Wednesday night.

The talk is over, and the smiles were polite for 30 minutes, as Canes head coach Mario Cristobal and Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day fielded questions on Tuesday. All their answers given with an abundance of restraint ahead of their quarterfinal matchup.

“You know, we have to continue to be who we are and be aggressive. But at the same time, we have to understand we’re up against and our opponents, so we’ve got to be on our game,” said Day.

“We all understood that within the building, we’re our biggest supporters, we are our best family members, and that we’re going to find a way and to put ourselves in a situation where we could have a chance,” said Cristobal.

There were no more interviews or press conferences afterwards, just preparation, pressure and execution.

“I think the biggest thing is focusing on us, obviously, you have to prepare for your opponent, you have to prepare for what they’re going to do, and they’re a very, very talented team, right?” Said Canes quarterback Carson Beck. “They’re very well coached, they’re very disciplined, and then the talent speaks for itself, but for us, it’s about us and what we’re able to do.”

“They’re elite at every level. I’m expecting great effort, I’m expecting a hard-nosed game, hard battle, like, they fly around, so it’s going to be a great game,” said Canes running back Mark Fletcher Jr.

However, the fans making the trip to see the game live love to talk that smack.

“So my freshman year at University of Miami was the national championship game where we lost to Ohio State, so I remember that heartbreak, and we are here to revenge that this weekend, so I’m excited,” said Canes fan Tim Jones.

“We have a very good defense, we’re not going to score a lot, but we maybe don’t need to if our defense can play the way they played all year,” said Buckeyes fan Mark Price.

So, two programs, one stage. When the ball is kicked, whoever executes best wins.

“A hundred thousand deep, all rooting against you, I love that feeling, I love it, I love that, i love the adversity, I love silencing the crowd, I just love knowing that I’m in enemy territory, and there’s 100,000 of them rooting against us,” said Canes defensive linemen Akheem Mesidor.

“Puts a little bit of a chip on your shoulder, but at the end of the day, no matter what, we are going to come out and compete and play the way we’re supposed to play, be 1-0 at the end of the day and just do what you’re supposed to do,” said Canes defensive linemen Rueben Bain Jr. “But going in as the underdog, when people doubting you and don’t think you get the job done, and you get the job done, that’s the best feeling.”

The countdown to kickoff is almost over, and 7Sports will be on the sidelines inside AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

South Florida will host the Orange Bowl at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens on New Year’s Day, where the Oregon Ducks will take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

‘It’s go time’: Miami Hurricanes make final preps ahead of Cotton Bowl at AT&T Stadium https://wsvn.com/sports/college/miami-hurricanes/its-go-time-miami-hurricanes-make-final-preps-ahead-of-cotton-bowl-at-att-stadium/ Tue, 30 Dec 2025 16:13:02 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1655537 ARLINGTON, Texas (WSVN) — The Miami Hurricanes are making final preparations ahead of the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic on New Year’s Eve.

Kickoff at the Cotton Bowl looms, with the lights brighter than ever this season for the Canes’ quarterfinal matchup against Ohio State at AT&T Stadium, Wednesday night.

“I’m going to be super amped up, I know this team is going to be super amped up. I think the first time I walk on the field will be a really, really cool feeling, you know?” said Canes quarterback Carson Beck. “Just look around, take everything in, and once I do that, it’s go time.”

The Hurricanes arrived in Dallas with swagger, confidence and zero interest in playing the underdog role.

“I knew that we would get to this point, I knew that we were going to have to go through some hard times, I knew it was going to be a grind, but I believed in the process the entire time,” said Canes running back Mark Fletcher Jr. “As soon as I signed that pen to the paper, I believed in the process, trusted the process, and I’m just very, very, very grateful that we’re here.”

“The unity of this team has been founded in just really hard work, been through some real trying times and situations and adversity, and it’s been exciting watching the growth and development of our guys just galvanized throughout the process,” said Canes head coach Mario Cristobal.

The players admitted the butterflies are very real.

“It’s a game, and I love this game, and I block out the noise, I block out the crowd,” said Canes defensive lineman Akheem Mesidor. “It’s just the game I fell in love with when I was 8 years old; it’s the same thing.”

This is the best team the Canes have had in over 20 years. Wednesday night, they’ll be given a chance to remind the college football world what Miami football is all about.

The dual coaches press conference will be held Tuesday afternoon.

Miami Hurricanes players arrive in Dallas ahead of College Football Playoff quarterfinals https://wsvn.com/sports/college/miami-hurricanes/miami-hurricanes-players-arrive-in-dallas-ahead-of-college-football-playoff-quarterfinals/ Mon, 29 Dec 2025 16:41:37 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1655192 DALLAS (WSVN) — Miami Hurricanes football is ready to give South Florida another reason to celebrate on New Year’s Eve — but first, the players needed to check in at their hotel and speak to the press for media day.

The team is now back in Texas, where they’ll face Ohio State in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl for the College Football Playoff quarterfinals on Wednesday night.

During the media day session, players were pretty tight-lipped, keeping key details close to the vest, but they did say they are ready for the face-off.

“I’m going to be super amped up. I know this team is going to be super amped up. I think the first time I walk on the field, it’ll be a really cool feeling. Just look around, take everything in, and once I do that, it’s go time,” said Hurricanes quarterback Carson Beck.

Players said they have zero interest in playing as the underdogs.

“I knew that we would get to this point. I knew that we were going to have to go through some hard times. I knew that there was going to be a grind, but I believed in the process the entire time,” said Hurricane running back Mark Fletcher Jr. “As soon as I signed that pen to the paper, I believed in the process, trusted the process, and I’m just very grateful that we’re here.”

Coach Mario Cristobal said he wants the team focused and on task.

“The unity of this team has been founded and just really hard work, been through some real trying times and situations and adversity, and it’s been exciting watching the growth and development of our guys, just galvanized throughout the process,” he said.

Earlier in the day, the Canes settled into their hotel after their flight from Miami to Dallas. They told 7Sports they are ready to get to work.

“I had a bed seat, I slept the whole ride, so I feel like it was a good thing,” said Canes defensive lineman Anez Cooper.

While the beds are different, the preparation routine remains the same.

“We’re the same team every week — no matter who we play, where we play, what we’re playing — and we’re going to prepare the same way and be the same team, same team we’ve been all year,” said Canes defensive back Jakobe Thomas.

Miami is focused on maximizing the time before its first-ever College Football Playoff quarterfinal game. However, players admitted during the presser that despite their professional status, the nerves are still there.

“It’s a game, and I love this game, and I block out the noise, the crowd. It’s just the game I fell in love with when I was 8 years old. It’s the same thing,” said Hurricanes defensive lineman Akheem Mesidor.

The stage is set, and now is the time to lock in with the Canes bringing their best team they’ve had in more than 20 years.

“They got a lot of talent from depth, starters, the guys that are on the bench, all through the depth,” said Thomas.

“And I just feel like that’s a big challenge for us that we’re going to go into come Wednesday, and I feel like we’re excited for the challenge, we’re just focused, and we’re just ready to play,” said Cooper.

There’s a lot of excitement from the Canes and their fanbase ahead of the New Year’s Eve matchup.

But until then, Canes players say they will rest, stay calm, and get ready to play well enough that they enter the new year still playing football.

Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Irvin tells 7News’ Sports Anchor Josh Moser that he’ll be flying into Irving on Tuesday night to witness the game.

Heat stars, legends pass out Thanksgiving assists for the holiday season https://wsvn.com/sports/miami-heat/heat-stars-legends-pass-out-thanksgiving-assists-for-the-holiday-season/ Tue, 25 Nov 2025 23:56:07 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1645595 Miami Heat stars, including Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro, stepped off the court to dish some major Thanksgiving assists to the community.

The stars were joined by volunteers from their respective foundations, The Bam, Books & Brotherhood Foundation and T. Herro Foundation, to distribute meals for families at Charles Hadley Park in Miami’s Liberty City neighborhood.

“I’m elated because I’ve been looking for some stuff I haven’t been able to find and you guys had it here and I’m gonna have a wonderful Thanksgiving,” said Lorna Smith, who was picking up food. “I wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving.”

All the usual holiday fixings were being handed out, with Adebayo and Herro lending a hand and speaking with the community.

The opportunity to connect with fans is something both All-Stars say they cherish being able to do.

“I was one of those kids where nobody really cared about us or my mom so being able to grow up and impact somebody else’s life in the smallest way possible,” said Adebayo.

“It’s very important, you know, ever since I came to Miami, that’s been something that I’ve always wanted to do, just be in the community as much as possible, give back and obviously, for holidays and events like this, it’s super important for me,” said Herro.

Also happening Tuesday, Heat legend and hall of famer Alonzo Mourning was on hand to give out food to families in Overtown.

Mourning has been a constant for the Thanksgiving season, providing meals for South Floridians for 26 consecutive years.

“So many people that are living here in South Florida that are below the poverty level that don’t have the ability to put food on the tables during the holidays, you know,” said Mourning. “We’re grateful that we have that opportunity.”

Former Heat player Caron Butler and former Dolphins wide receiver Jarvis Landry were among the other local community leaders who also took part in handing out meals to families.

What seems like a small act of kindness for these players and legends helps the community build lifelong memories and create stronger ties together.

Miami Heat’s DJ Irie joins Sports Xtra to talk about 19th annual charity event https://wsvn.com/sports/miami-heats-dj-irie-joins-sports-xtra-to-talk-about-19th-annual-charity-event/ Mon, 22 Sep 2025 16:09:38 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1619714 Miami might have the most unique blend of sports, music, and entertainment, all three are tied together creating game experiences that people love. 7Sports celebrates a pioneer in the Miami sports and entertainment space, that is now giving back to the next generation.

Special guest DJ Irie joins 7News Sports Xtra, bringing sports, music, entertainment together, and giving back to the community hosting his 19th annual Irie Weekend for charity.

Josh Moser: ” The city loves you so much, and for those who don’t know, he was the original NBA in arena DJ. He’s created so many jobs, the first, the original.”

DJ Irie, Irie Weekend Host: “That’s pretty amazing to think about it, man. A lot of people don’t realize, you know, it was started in the 1999-2000 season. Like, that feels like forever ago.”

Josh Moser: “The real reason we’re here, we’ve got it all over your shirt, we’ve got it on your hat, we’ve got Irene Weekend. Oh, this whole thing! This whole thing? Best weekend of the year.”

DJ Irie: “It’s a great time, and I cannot believe we’re sitting here talking about the 19th. It would have been 22. We took a two-year hiatus because of COVID, obviously, but we’re back, we’ve been back. It’s the 19th. It’s really surreal to think, you know, where we started. Where we are now and the fact that we’re still going strong, it’s unbelievable. All because of the support of the community. Only in Miami can something like this thrive and happen. It’s a beautiful thing.”

Josh Moser: “Big brothers, big sisters, that’s who you’re doing this for. We’ve got golf, we’ve got dinner, we’ve got tennis, we’ve just got the full weekend ready.”

DJ Irie: “So obviously we’re kicking it off Friday, October 3rd, at our home, the Miami Beach Golf Club. This year’s gonna be really, really interesting because my man Jamie Foxx is coming out to play. Golf is amazing and I enjoy golf. I have zero golf skills, but tennis is a whole other thing. That’s my game, and yes, I have skills. So we’re going to do what’s called the Game, Set, and Give Pro-Am that’s happening at Flamingo Tennis Center on Miami Beach. Come out and check it out and at least, you know, if you like tennis, come be a part of it.

Josh Moser: “We’ve got a lot of people watching at home, a lot of them can’t be there, but how do they support if they just want to help the cause?”

DJ Irie: “Sure. Well, number one, log on to iriefoundation.org, you’ll see the work that we’re doing you’ll see our partnerships. You know, this community has done so much for me, come log on and see what we’re doing for our community and for our youth. It’s really amazing.”

Josh Moser: “Anything that we can do to help, you are a friend of the program. It’s amazing to see what you’ve built. We’re just excited to help tell your story.”

DJ Irie: “It wouldn’t be what it is without Sports Extra, without WSVN. I mean, you guys have been really, really amazing. Every year, we don’t dial it in, okay? We don’t dial it in. We don’t Zoom it in, whatever. We’re here in studio. It’s that important to us to come out here and sit down with you guys.”

Forget Art Basel, these are the best two days of the year, the 19th annual Irie Weekend takes place Oct. 3-4. Unfortunately, Hurricane Milton cancelled last year’s festivities, so that mean’s double the anticipation for this year.

“We talk about winning, everybody loves a winner. We almost had 500,000 people out at the last parade. No one really knew what hockey was that was living here [in South Florida] and now all of a sudden this is where you want to be,” said Moser.

Florida Panthers stars Aaron Ekblad and Carter Verhaeghe got their chance to express how they feel after their back-to-back Stanley Cup wins.

“Winning is so special and to be able to do it again with this group is something special,” said Verhaeghe.

The players also recalled how they spent their summer season following the championship win.

Moser also talked about the players’ relationship with each other being the glue for the team and one of their keys to success.

“You’re in a world-class facility. You’ve got amazing players, you have players that like each other and that really want to be here and I think once everybody wants to be here it’s where everyone else wants to be,” said Moser.

Former Panthers brawler Nick Tarnasky gets into fistfight on golf course in Canada https://wsvn.com/sports/florida-panthers/former-panthers-brawler-nick-tarnasky-gets-into-fistfight-on-golf-course-in-canada/ Thu, 10 Jul 2025 22:26:29 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1591318 RED DEER, Canada (WSVN) — Former Florida Panthers player Nick Tarnasky was involved in a viral physical altercation on a Canadian golf course over the weekend.

The former NHL enforcer was golfing at Alberta Springs Golf Course, located in Red Deer, Alberta, when he and another golfer who appeared to be intoxicated got into a fistfight after a heated verbal exchange.

Tarnasky and his golfing partner appeared to be frustrated with the other man over how slowly they were playing through the course.

When Tarnasky repeatedly told the man to stop taking so long teeing up, things quickly became physical.

“He’s been sitting there for [expletive] 23 minutes,” Tarnasky could be heard yelling at the man.

“Cry about it!” the man yelled back at him.

At one point, the man appeared to be taunting Tarnasky before charging at him.

Tarnasky shoved the man to the ground near a pond, continuing to shout at him.

“He [expletive] came at me!” Tarnasky yelled at the man’s golfing partner.

After the man got back up, he went back toward Tarnasky, who started swinging several punches at the man, yelling “bang” between each strike and shoving him to the ground a second time.

A known fighter on the ice, Tarnasky was first drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2003 and played 245 games in the NHL, spending 300 minutes of those games in the penalty box.

Canadian authorities said the matter has been closed, and Tarnasky will not be put behind bars, but the Red Deer minor league hockey team he coaches for has said they are looking into the incident.

Florida Panthers star Sam Bennett works with Humane Society of Broward County to help pets find forever homes https://wsvn.com/sports/florida-panthers-star-sam-bennett-works-with-humane-society-of-broward-county-to-help-pets-find-forever-homes/ Mon, 26 May 2025 11:26:09 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1577163 Off the ice, Sam Bennett dishes out something even more meaningful than assists. 7News’ Josh Moser found out the Panthers forward helps shelter dogs find their forever homes one wagging tail at a time.

For the cats and dogs, every time this cat scores on the ice, a person scores a free pet adoption from the Broward Humane Society.

“There are so many amazing dogs here, and cats, that are available, and I think just letting people know that you can get an amazing pet from adopting,” said Sam Bennett. “And we have, and hopefully more people can follow suit.

Panthers star Sam Bennett is not just a Stanley Cup champion but also a dedicated animal lover. Alongside his fiancé, Zoe, the couple created an adoption charity, Benny’s Buddies, after adopting a dog of their own, Billy.

“Anytime we get home after a road trip, I can’t wait to get home and see my pet,” he said. “So yeah, I hope more people can adopt for sure.

Bennett covers all adoption fees for every goal scored this season. So far, more than 30 animals have found new homes thanks to Benny’s efforts on the ice.

“We have adopted, we have featured 20 pets already,” Cherie Wachter of the Humane Society of Broward County. “We’re trying to keep up with the number of goals that he is scoring, which is a fabulous problem. It truly is a win-win for everybody.”

Broward County resident Leslie Robinson was able to add a new family member thanks to the program.

“We saw the video on social media of Cocoa, who now is called Sam, after Sam Bennett, and we just said, ‘We just got to have him.’ He’s a sweetheart,” she told 7News.

The Humane Society has an entire room dedicated to the Panthers and Benny’s Buddies. An added bonus—an autographed Sam Bennet pet bandana.

“We’ve had so much success with Benny’s Buddies this year,” said Sam Bennet. “Got tons of support. It’s growing a lot, and we’re getting tons of traction.”

Benny’s Buddies is more than just a charity. It’s a movement, a reminder that a small assist can lead to the ultimate goal.

Local Yankees catcher appears in social media video celebrating big league debut https://wsvn.com/sports/local-yankees-catcher-appears-in-social-media-video-celebrating-big-league-debut/ Tue, 01 Apr 2025 22:37:14 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1560641 From an Uber driver to playing for the New York Yankees, a Hialeah star turned heads when he appeared on a recent social media page celebrating his entrance into the Big Leagues.

J.C. Escarra returned to the Raising Cane restaurant he used to work at for a celebration that was a long time in the making.

Escarra grew up in Hialeah, attending school at Mater Academy Charter School before attending Florida International University.

He was a standout player for FIU’s baseball team, hitting 15 home runs and driving in 49 runs in his final collegiate season in 2017.

He was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles that year, but would spend the next few years in the minor leagues for several teams as well as in the Mexican and International Leagues.

Now, he’s living his dream after getting the call from the New York Yankees to play as a catcher for the 2025 season.

He said he wants his journey to be an example for others to never give up on their dream.

“From Uber driving and substitute teaching to being now in the major leagues. I want my story to be an inspiration to everyone out there. It’s a dream come true, especially to play at Yankee Stadium for the New York Yankees,” Escarra said on the social media video.

He added that his biggest inspiration is his mom.

Last month, The Yankees shared a video of Escarra telling his mom he would be playing in New York on social media.

“We’re going to New York,” he told her in Spanish in the video as she screamed in excitement.

On Tuesday, his mother recalled that moment.

“It was a dream come true. It was like I was not expecting it, but I had it in my heart. God knew that at the perfect time and it was that day,” said Marinelys Escarra. “When he called, it was normal until he told me the news, and then I started smiling, screaming and crying at the same time,” Marinelys Escarra said.

J.C. said he never gave up hope and always chased his dreams.

Now, he said he’s focused on helping his team win big and continue inspiring younger players to follow in his footsteps.

“I want everyone to keep pushing when there is no light at the end of the tunnel, to keep fighting and not to give up,” he said.

The Yankees will play the Diamondbacks on Tuesday night.

Columbus High retires Boozer brothers’ jerseys, celebrates historic fourth consecutive state title https://wsvn.com/sports/columbus-high-retires-boozer-brothers-jerseys-celebrates-historic-fourth-consecutive-state-title/ Fri, 21 Mar 2025 14:19:31 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1557096 Christopher Columbus High School celebrated a historic day Thursday, honoring its basketball team for winning a record-breaking fourth straight state championship and retiring the jerseys of standout brothers Cameron and Cayden Boozer.

In front of the entire student body, the school unveiled retired jersey banners for the Boozer twins — the first time in school history any student-athlete has received the honor.

Cameron’s No. 12 and Cayden’s No. 2 will never be worn by a Columbus basketball player again. Both brothers, sons of former NBA star Carlos Boozer, are committed to play at Duke University.

The event also highlighted another major accomplishment: head coach Andrew Moran was named the 2025 Jersey Mike’s Naismith High School Coach of the Year. Moran led the Explorers to their fourth consecutive state title, making Columbus only the second school in Miami-Dade County to achieve that milestone in basketball.

Among the attendees was new University of Miami men’s basketball head coach Jai Lucas, who recruited the Boozer twins to Duke.

Meet Miami Marlins new manager Clayton McCullough https://wsvn.com/sports/meet-miami-marlins-new-manager-clayton-mccullough/ Mon, 25 Nov 2024 16:13:30 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1510676 The Miami Marlins officially named Clayton McCullough as their new manager. The Dodgers first base coach replaces Skip Schumacher as the man in charge of the Marlins dugout.

McCullough explained his excitement about the opportunity in front of him to 7’s Josh Moser.

“This is maybe the first time it felt like it’s kind of started to sink in or maybe my feet hit the ground when Bruce and Peter handed me the jersey. Put it on. Now, the realization that this is official now,” said McCullough. “I’m extremely excited.”

“86 is your number? Why 86?” asked Moser.

“So four years ago, my first opportunity on a major league staff, when it’s something you kind of connect with family we needed to have numbers that were over a certain threshold or so and I kind of wanted my wife’s birthday, but a player had it. So I felt the next best thing was the year so it has a little tie to my wife and family,” he said.”86 is not your like typical, popular baseball jersey.”

“Well, 86 hopefully going to bring a lot of success to this field. How would you define success in your first season in charge?” asked Moser.

“I think success will be defined [when] we look back at the end of the 2025 season and look at the strides that we’ve made. That doesn’t mean that winning each night is not going to be a goal. We, each day, put our best foot forward as a group and as an organization. Get a little bit better each day as a staff,” he said. “

“You know us doing what’s in the best interest of our players and we look back at the end of the season and go, you know we put some incredible processes in place. Our systems were strong. We feel really confident about the direction we’re going with and still the intent to come out each night and win a baseball game.”

“We understand you’re coming from the Dodgers coming off the World Series run. For fans that have been watching for years, wanting to experience that feeling, what was that actually like for you to reach the pinnacle?” asked Moser.

“I can still remember jogging down first base line, top of the ninth inning in game five, you know you’re three outs away you got a one-run lead, you wanted to score some more but you’re like man we’re three outs away from this happening. When that last out was made, Walker Buehler gets the strikeout, the elation, exhaustion. You know how many people had to contribute,” he said.

“There were fingerprints all over that championship through the Major League staff players, player development, scouting, and then you realize that the people are what make it drive and make this thing go.”

“So that’s what so exciting here too, is the type of people that we’re going to be continuing to bring in that we already have in place. Everyone’s fingerprints will be on the successes of Marlins moving forward,” he continued.

“From everyone that speaks to you, they speak so highly of you, they mention character over and over again. What do you want the character of your team to be next year?” asked Moser.

“I think it’s a group of our fans can come out and be proud of. They’re going to wok hard. Come out with a real competitive edge and a real competitive fire each night when they go out there to play. And then we just look to be focusing on those things we can control each day. There’s so much outside noise and outside factors, let’s be disciplined and stay on top of what we can control preparing the right way each single day,” he said.

“You’re so serious in your approach to all of this. We know that you’ve dedicated your entire life, but today is about you. Realizing how far you’ve come in the moment you’re in and you’re in the Major League. How much has that sunk in?” asked Moser.

“It’s getting there. I think putting the jersey on when Bruce and Peter slipped the jersey on. Now, you are officially the seventh manager in Miami Marlins history, you are thinking ‘Okay like it’s here’ So many people aided and helped me along the way to even have a chance to be in this time of position. So I know it’s less about me and all the other people. My family has always been there. My feet are just now kind of hitting the ground,” said McCullough.

“How do you celebrate this?” asked Moser.

“Go give my family another hug. We’ll just pinch ourselves at some point and think you know, it’s real,” said McCullough.

Schumaker is now the manager in waiting for the Texas Rangers.

Gratitude was the attitude as families stocked up on Thanksgiving treats at a free farmer’s market at Samuel K. Johnson Youth Center in Miami, Wednesday.

Miami Heat legend Udonis Haslem and three-time All-Star Bam Adebayo teamed up with Love Has No Limits organization, and other vendors to hand out food, and free health services.

“I never had an opportunity when I was younger to have NBA players come to my community and impact my community. So I can only imagine how that feels. For me it’s just giving back to the community,” said Adebayo. “One of these days you might see one of these kids in the NFL, NBA, you never know. So just being able to share that light or that type of motivation.”

Between giving back, Haslem and Adebayo were seen signing autographs, taking photos and having fun with the community.

WNBA’s 2024 Most Valuable Player A’ja Wilson, who plays for the Las Vegas Aces, was seen giving back to South Florida families.

Around 500 people lined up to receive a free turkey, side dishes, and fresh fruit and vegetables to enjoy on their dinner table.

“I want a turkey,” said Laurie Boykins. “It really helps, it really, really, really helps.”

The spirit of giving and being a good neighbor was felt by the basketball stars and community.

Free medical services like health screenings, dental care and vaccinations were also provided.

People also received a $30 gift card if they donate blood.

Children were seen having fun partaking in rock climbing, petting zoo, bounce houses and trampolines.

Services were also provided for children including essentials to help children with hygiene and clothing.

All the kids agreed, nothing beats getting to see Bam up close.

“Bam’s signature,” said a boy

“And I love Bam. I love him,” said another boy.

“I’mma take 3,000 pictures,” said a boy.

Give Miami Day presented five $5,000 checks to five different organizations, all in an effort to help the local community.

Dwyane Wade’s mother talks about son’s statue reveal at Kaseya Center, Magic City’s love for Heat legend https://wsvn.com/sports/miami-heat/dwyane-wades-mother-talks-about-sons-statue-reveal-at-kaseya-center-magic-citys-love-for-heat-legend/ Thu, 24 Oct 2024 23:33:07 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1499557 As Miami gets ready to reveal Dwyane Wade’s statue outside the Kaseya Center, his mother thanked the city for their love for her son.

Dwyane Wade and Bam Adebayo gathered at Chapman Partnership in Miami for Hoops For Kids on Thursday evening.

The event marks one of many events leading up to the big day on Sunday, when the Miami Heat reveal Dwyane’s statue.

Children couldn’t be happier to play basketball with a Miami Heat legend and one of the team’s current stars for a good cause.

7’s Josh Moser spoke to Dwyane Wade’s mother — Jolinda Wade, also known as “Momma Wade” — ahead of her son’s big day.

“I was telling [Dwyane] today that the Hall of Fame, you know, you expect that. The statue, it hit me once I got off the plane. This is a bonus, this is a plus to the journey and path in which he took to get to the place he’s at,” she said.

Jolinda said it is special to see the love her son still receives in Miami, even after retiring back in 2019.

Being a mom to a Hall of Famer, Jolinda said she is proud to be a part of her son’s journey to NBA greatness.

“It’s going to be the unveiling for me, you know, the emotions are gonna come all over the place,” she said, “and just to see us there as a family, looking up at this moment. I’m talking about Little Dwyane, you know, somebody that, you know he going somewhere in life, but you never expect that this was going to be his journey. And I am glad and proud as a mom that I got a chance to take this journey with him.”

The statue unveiling takes place on Sunday. Doors open at 4 p.m. It’s a free event, but you do need tickets to attend.

Dolphins place Tua Tagovailoa on injured reserve after latest concussion https://wsvn.com/sports/miami-dolphins/dolphins-place-tua-tagovailoa-on-injured-reserve-after-latest-concussion-agency-says/ Tue, 17 Sep 2024 20:15:58 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1485664 The Miami Dolphins have placed quarterback Tua Tagovailoa on injured reserve days after he suffered a concussion following the team’s 31-10 loss to Buffalo.

The news was first confirmed to 7Sports by Athletes First, the agency that represents Tagovailoa.

The earliest Tagovailoa can return would be Week 8 versus the Arizona Cardinals, missing at least four games.

On Monday, the Dolphins signed backup quarterback Tyler Huntley off the Ravens’ practice squad. Coach Mike McDaniel said he is being added for depth behind current No. 2 quarterback Skylar Thompson.

Tagovailoa was hurt on a play where he collided with Bills defensive back Damar Hamlin. He ran for a first down and then initiated the contact by lowering his shoulder into Hamlin instead of sliding.

Players from both teams immediately motioned that Tagovailoa was hurt, and as he lay on the turf the quarterback exhibited some signs typically associated with a traumatic brain injury. He remained down on the field for a couple of minutes, got to his feet and walked to the sideline after the third-quarter play.

Tagovailoa in July signed a four-year extension worth $212.4 million, the most money the Dolphins have ever invested in a player.

Along with placing Tagovailoa on IR, the Dolphins signed tackle Jackson Carman to the practice squad and released wide receiver Robbie Chosen from the practice squad.

‘Thank you’: Father and son celebrate history together as the Florida Panthers win their first Stanley Cup https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/thank-you-father-and-son-celebrate-history-together-as-the-florida-panthers-win-their-first-stanley-cup/ Tue, 25 Jun 2024 22:43:48 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1456798 As Panther fans celebrate a historic victory, a father and son express how huge this moment is for them.

A series sweep would have had its perks but for Joel and Mitchell Wiseman, they will never forget being part of a comeback team.

“Were you nervous at all?” said 7News’ reporter Michael Hudak.

“I actually was,” said Joel.

“But you were confident?” said Hudak.

“Ya,” said Joel.

The father and son were able to cherish the Panthers championship together, 31 years in the making.

For Joel and Mitchell, that time is cherished.

“We almost lost this guy two or three times over the past six months and I’m not even kidding. And for him to be able to get out and even come to a hockey game and then see this happen. I mean unbelievable, unbelievable,” said Mitchell about his father.

A Panthers Stanley Cup was a bucket list item for Mitchell and his 79-year-old dad.

“It felt very reminiscent of the other team, I mean, when you wait forever,” said Joel.

It is a celebration for them just as much as the entire organization.

“Thank you. Panthers are a class organization and we are thrilled. Go cats,” said Mitchell.

A team uniting a city, a fan base and a father and son.

Florida Panthers celebrate Stanley Cup Final win at multiple stops, including Elbo Room, in Fort Lauderdale https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/florida-panthers-celebrate-stanley-cup-final-win-at-multiple-stops-including-elbo-room-in-fort-lauderdale/ Tue, 25 Jun 2024 15:06:15 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1456628 After the Florida Panthers won their first Stanley Cup Final Monday night, fans took to the streets throughout South Florida to celebrate. Those celebrations continued onto the next day at a Fort Lauderdale venue, where Panthers players were seen hoisting the Stanley Cup.

7Skyforce hovered over the Elbo Room Beach Bar, located at 241 S. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd, Tuesday morning, where a large crowd gathered around the venue.

Several fans were seen outside the venue as they attempted to get a glimpse of the Stanley Cup.

Players were seen on the second floor of the Elbo Room, kissing the Stanley Cup and throwing beer bombs as they led the crowd in “Let’s Go Panthers” chants.

Following the big win, players remained in the arena until 3 a.m and then they partied at Tkachuk’s home. They then made their way to the Elbo Room.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue passed by the Elbo Room to give the players a shoutout.

Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk was at Elbo Room.

“Yeah, we’ve been going pretty good all night, it’s been a good party so far. We earned it,” Tkachuk said. “Guys are having a great time. Anytime the cup’s around, it’s incredible. Definitely makes it a lot of fun. Every time you touch it, look at it, able to hoist it, it’s something special.”

Elbo Room was closed off to fans but many still gathered outside.

“I just got a beer shower. I didn’t even shower this morning. My shower is out of the Stanley Cup right there,” said Luke Scala.

“I mean, it can’t get any better than that,” said John Shapiro.

“It’s just so happy. We won for the first time and it’s good that we experienced it,” said a young fan.

Fans watched as the players began singing “We Are The Champions” atop the Elbo Room.

“It’s awesome. I’m experiencing this with my two daughters. Big hockey fans. It’s great for the community, great for South Florida,” said Oscar Marrero.

“It’s incredible. It’s awesome. I’m so proud of them, and it was so awesome watching them the whole time and they did it!” said Madison Woodruff.

“I have been a fan since day one, Miami Arena, couldn’t be happier right now. This is an awesome scene right here and champions of the world,” said Carey Laufer.

After the celebrations on top of the Elbo Room, the Stanley Cup was on the move as Aleksander Barkov took the cup to the beach. Fans followed and recorded as Tkachuk took the cup for a swim.

Following the Elbo Room celebration and the dip in the beach, some players were seen eating lunch at Moxies in Fort Lauderdale. Others took the Stanley Cup to Cafe Europa and Ann’s Florist and Coffee Bar.

“All the panthers just came with the Stanley Cup. We had a beer with them and drank out of the Stanley Cup,” said Ethan, a fan.

The Panthers’ championship parade is set for Sunday in Fort Lauderdale.

The parade is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Fans are invited to join the festivities along the parade route, which begins at A1A and Riomar Street.

Florida Panthers look for another win in a match-up against Tampa Bay Lightning https://wsvn.com/sports/florida-panthers/florida-panthers-look-for-another-win-in-a-match-up-against-tampa-bay-lightning/ Tue, 23 Apr 2024 21:46:17 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1436539 The Florida Panthers are off to a roaring start in the National Hockey League playoffs as they notched a 1-0 win over the weekend.

But on Tuesday, they look to defend the home ice again and hope to take a 2-0 series lead against their in-state rivals Tampa Bay Lightning.

7News cameras captured the Panthers playing a skate around as the team understand their gameplay must be crisp to secure the 2-0 lead.

“I think it’s a new game. They are going to hit the reset button over there and I’m sure, you know, try to come out harder than they did last game. So, we come out and do what we did in Game One, I think, you know, we’ll be pretty good,” said Panthers Forward Evan Rodrigues.

On Sunday, the Panthers won a 3-2 game against the Lightning, beginning their 2024 Stanley Cup playoff run in front of a sold out crowd.

“We have amazing fans, we want to use them because they’ve been awesome all year,” said Panthers Defenseman Gustav Forsling.

The team’s head coach described what he believes will give his team the advantage going in to Tuesday’s game.

“Both teams are going to look, how do we generate more? How do we get more time in there? And how do we create a little bit more without opening their game up? And I think that’ll be the challenge tonight. It just means at the end of the day, just skate faster,” said Panthers Head Coach Paul Maurice.

Maurice said his team was going to keep it loose on the ice.

The Panthers made it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals last year so the team will be banking on that experience.

Miami Heat gear up for play-in match-up against 76ers in Philadelphia; Spoelstra says team is ready https://wsvn.com/sports/miami-heat/miami-heat-gear-up-for-play-in-match-up-against-76ers-in-philadelphia-spoelstra-says-team-is-ready/ Wed, 17 Apr 2024 21:00:42 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1434599 PHILADELPHIA (WSVN) — The Miami Heat are gearing up for their Wednesday night match-up against the Philadelphia 76ers.

The highly anticipated game between the two teams will decide which one will earn the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference title.

7News cameras captured Miami Heat players warming up at Temple University, Wednesday morning.

“You can feel it. It’s that time of year again. Everyone’s excited to be, you know, done with the regular season, so we’re excited,” said Heat guard Tyler Herro.

The team’s head coach, Erik Spoelstra, said his team is ready.

“We’re looking forward to it. I mean, this is what you want. You want to have these kind of environments, these kinds of games,” said Spoelstra. “We watched the games last night; it’s the best of what this association is about.”

Spoelstra said this opportunity is what the team plays all season for.

“We’re going to try to do whatever we have to do, you know, to put ourselves in a position to win,” he said, “and, if it goes according to plan, we’re able to get them out of the comfort zone, that’s great. If it doesn’t, then we figure out a different path to get to win.”

The coach emphasized that this play-in matchup is more about the team than their opponent.

“This is about just falling back on our habits and, you know, being our best versions tonight,” said Spoelstra. “I just want our guys to really embrace the competition, enjoy it, compete for each other, and do what we have to do.”

Both teams have tons of playoff rivalry, which has been shown in the past two to three seasons. There are a lot of storylines that intersect both teams, as Heat player Jimmy Butler used to play in the 76ers, and Philadelphia 76ers point guard Kyle Lowry used to play with the Miami Heat.

7News cameras captured Lowry, a future Hall of Famer, warming up on the court as he threw some basketballs into the basket.

Now, both teams face one another in a high-stakes matchup.

The winning team will be locked in to the seventh seed in the East and face off against the New York Knicks.

Whoever loses the Wednesday game will have one last opportunity at a play-in game on Friday to make it into the playoffs.

Miami Heat arrive in Philadelphia ahead of play-in game against the 76ers https://wsvn.com/sports/miami-heat/miami-heat-arrive-in-philadelphia-ahead-of-play-in-game-against-the-76ers/ Tue, 16 Apr 2024 21:52:56 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1434301 PHILADELPHIA (WSVN) — The Miami Heat arrived in Philadelphia on Tuesday evening, one day before they are set to face the Philadelphia 76ers.

Even though a loss wouldn’t mean elimination for the Heat, the team is approaching the game as a one-game season.

7News cameras captured the Heat’s final practice match before the big game on Wednesday.

“It’s going to be fun, it’s going to be competitive, competitive as always, we’re going to go out there complete and play off,” said Heat center Bam Adebayo.

The Heat will play against 76ers in the Seventh-Eighth Eastern Conference play-in game.

Head Coach Erik Spoelstra said he is keeping things very simple for his team ahead of the tip-off.

“We’re looking forward to it. You don’t know what to expect unless other than it’s going to be a high level competition and you have to be about that,” said Spoelstra.

The coach said his team is focused on the upcoming game.

“You don’t want to overthink at this time. There’s only one day in between. We’ve played them four times. We are who we are, they are who they are at this point. Let’s tip this thing up,” said Spoelstra.

The Heat players tell 7News they are very confident about the outcome of the game.

“We’ve been in a lot of these games before, we’re all experienced, we’ve been to the finals, we understand what’s at stake,” said Adebayo.

“It’s going to be everything we expect it to be, even regular season games are pretty live in there. Obviously, everybody knows what’s at stake, you just expect it, you know, a dogfight. I think coming with the right mentality, and you know, as long as we do that, we’re always going to give ourselves a chance,” said Heat forward Caleb Martin.

The team announced more good news on Tuesday afternoon, saying that Duncan Robinson will be available for the contest. Robinson has been battling a back injury for roughly a month.

With this announcement, the Heat’s entire roster, with the exception of Terry Rozier who is out with a neck injury, will be available for the game on Wednesday.

If the Heat win on Wednesday, then they are locked in to the seventh seed in the East and will face the New York Knicks.

If they lose, then it’s back home on Friday to play for the eighth spot. If they win the Friday game, they face the Boston Celtics.

But if they lose the Wednesday game and the Friday game, then they will be eliminated.

Thursday night’s event was held to raise funds for the Tua Foundation and the Dan Marino Foundation, bringing in nearly 300 supporters, including Dolphins legends and enthusiastic fans for a night of philanthropy and Polynesian culture.

Attendees experienced a traditional Hawaiian performance and a chance to bid on exclusive sports memorabilia during a silent auction, which contributed to the charitable efforts of the night.

“It really is a blessing. I am very fortunate to be in the position that I’m in now to use my platform to be able to do things like this,” said Tagovailoa.

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel and NFL greats like Dan Marino and Jim Kelly were among the high-profile figures in attendance.

“To see these guys and to see Dan Marino supporting — to see Jim Kelly here supporting this — it really is amazing,” said 2020 Fan of the Year, Ian Berger.

Fans expressed their excitement about the opportunity to interact with their heroes.

“There’s no better place to be right now than right here,” said Dolphins fan Lisa Siegel. “Tua is doing so much good in the community.”

The night concluded on a high note, as Tagovailoa dedicated nearly an hour to take photographs and sign autographs for fans. He even took to the stage with his guitar and serenaded the audience with Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds.”

At one point, Tagovailoa uttered a phrase in Samoan, then translated it.

“That means ‘the pathway to leadership is through service,'” he said. “And for everyone that’s here, this is their service. This is service by giving back, not expecting anything in return.”

The Tua Foundation raised more than $800,00 to help children.

Miami Marlins kick off opening day against Pirates at loanDepot park https://wsvn.com/sports/miami-marlins-to-kick-off-opening-day-against-pirates-at-loandepot-park/ Thu, 28 Mar 2024 16:37:12 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1428089 It’s time to play ball as the Miami Marlins, who made the playoffs last season, will finally get it started on their opening day against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

At loanDeport Park Thursday afternoon, it is expected that a crowd of 37,000 will be in attendance for the game. Fans are also encouraged to make opening day a festive event by bringing bongos, drums, trumpets, and flags to the game.

As far as the team goes, the Miami Marlins are ready to start their season.

Skip Schumaker enters his second season as the Marlins manager.

“There’s nothing like major league opening day. There just isn’t,” Schumaker said. “No matter where you’re at in your career, as a manager that’s been around for a little bit, I remember opening day in Dodgers Stadium. When I was there, growing up as a Dodgers fan and then getting to play on opening day there it was a surreal moment.”

The opening day starter will be Jesús Luzardo. The Parkland native had a rough spring training: Four starts and ERA of 5.24.

But now, the games will count.

Luzardo got tickets for 65 family members and friends to be in the stands.

As a kid growing up in South Florida, it’s a dream to pitch opening day for your hometown team.

“This will be my sixth season in the big leagues and I still feel like a kid,” Luzardo said. “I go back to my old high school and hangout with them and I feel like I’m one of them still. But at the same time, I mean, I can see the maturity when I’m on the mound at times and then like, my thought process in between and stuff. I’ve definitely grown in that in the sense, but at the same time, I still feel like I’m a kid.”

The Marlins return two-time All-Star second baseman and two-time batting champion Luis Arráez.

This team will also have a full season with Jake Burger and Josh Bell.

Peter Bendix is in his first season as the Marlins president of baseball operations.

“We feel really good about the group that we have,” Bendix said. “I think there’s a lot of young talent on this team, there’s a lot of talent that can do different things, right. We got speed, we got power, we got guys that that can put the ball in play, we got good defenders and I think it’s about giving those young guys opportunities to show what they can do.”

At loanDepot park, seating at the second level, from sections 201-204, is the all-you-can-eat section. For $52, you can get a seat and an endless amount of popcorn, peanuts, hot dogs, cheeseburgers, soda and water.

Fans could begin to enter the stadium at 2:00 p.m.

The first pitch against the Pirates starts at 4:10 p.m.

Bicyclists on Saturday morning chose to ride up to 99 miles or simply walk a 5K for charity.

The 14th annual charity bike ride and 5K raised close to $10 million for cancer research.

Pro Football Hall of Famer Dan Marino started this year’s festivities bright and early.

“Let’s have some fun. Let’s roll!” he said.

Some of the better-known athletes who took the journey said this is a special day of the year.

“It’s incredible, man, especially this year. I feel like there’s so many people here of all different races, backgrounds, groups,” said Miami Dolphins defensive end Jaelan Phillips. “It’s just incredible to see how this event brings everybody together.”

7News is a proud sponsor of DCC. Paul Magnes, WSVN’s general manager, joined 7Sports’ Josh Moser and more than 5,000 others as they pedaled for a purpose.

It was a very meaningful event for cancer survivors and for those who are still receiving treatment.

“Even though I was discouraged, I’m here to do the 5K today in honor of myself, in honor of my mom, who is currently in a battle but winning,” said cancer survivor Precious Sargent. “I mean, it just feels good to know that with Christ, all things are possible. I just feel grateful to be here.”

The DCC mantra is “one team, one fight.” Plans are already underway for the 15th annual event next year.

“So the community comes together with this ‘one team, one fight’ mission to fund cancer research today,” said Javier Sanchez, DCC’s executive director.

The event has raised over $64 million for local cancer research since it began in 2010.

Crews put out fire at Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill’s mansion in Southwest Ranches https://wsvn.com/sports/miami-dolphins/crews-put-out-fire-at-dolphins-receiver-tyreek-hills-mansion-in-southwest-ranches/ Wed, 03 Jan 2024 19:30:12 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1396525 Firefighters have put out a fire at the home of Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill in Southwest Ranches.

Davie Fire Rescue units arrived at the home shortly after 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

7Skyforce hovered over the scene, where black smoke billowed from the mansion’s roof.

Firefighters were seen on the roof as they searched for the source of the fire. Crews had to knock a portion of the roof down to handle the fire.

The Miami Dolphins issued a statement that reads,

“Tyreek has been in communication with his family. Everyone is out of the house and safe at this time. He has also left practice to deal with the situation.”

Miami Dolphins

Dolphins’ quarterback Tua Tagovailoa spoke with the media after practice and gave his support for his teammate, saying that the most important thing is his teammate’s safety along with his family.

“I think that would be difficult for, not just my teammates, but for anyone in general to be going through what Tyreek is going through right now,” he said. “I think the main thing is his family is safe, his loved ones are good, and he’s good as well. I know it’s a little clichéd to say, but those things like that, part of the house, some of those things can be replaceable, but I’m just glad that a lot of his family members are safe.”

At one point, the fire was upgraded to a two-alarm fire. More firefighters arrived at the scene to locate the source of the fire.

Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said the fire was contained to one room and that Hill is in the best spirits anyone in this situation can be in.

“It is very difficult for anybody, obviously, to have your home catch on fire, but Tyreek was handling it with as much poise as you can hope,” said Rosenhaus.

Rosenhaus said there were family members inside the home when the fire began, but he didn’t disclose who or how many people were inside. No injuries were reported.

A year ago, Hill welcomed his fans to get a taste of his superstar lifestyle through a YouTube video.

“Today I’m gonna give you guys a house tour. I got my black galaxy over there,” said Hill in the video.

From his cars to his courtyard, he gave the viewers a grand tour of the seven-bedroom and eight-and-a-half-bathroom mansion that he bought in 2022 for $6.9 million.

“Next time you see this, a lot of this will be changed up,” said Hill in the video.

The change is the west wing of his home. So much had to be done to put out the fire, double the amount of crews were called.

It took firefighters almost an hour after the initial call to tame the flames.

“There will obviously be some kind of investigation, and then we’ll go from there,” said Rosenhaus.

Hill was at Dolphins practice as Miami prepares for its regular-season finale against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night. Upon hearing the news of the fire, he left practice and was seen on video outside his home speaking with his family.

“You are on the field practicing, and everything is focused there. Then all of a sudden, you hear somebody’s house is on fire,” said Dolphins wide receiver Braxton Berrios. “It’s a sad reality that we have those things to worry about, and seeing him run off the field was kind of a real moment.”

Other teammates were just as shocked as Hill when they heard the news.

“It’s something that catches you off guard a little bit. You don’t think that it’s ever going to happen to you until it does,” said Dolphins fullback Alec Ingold. “So, it’s something that as a team, we’ve got to be able to come together and make sure that we can reach out to Tyreek and be human beings with him, right? And make sure that everything is squared away, and we can do everything we possibly can to help our teammates.”

Dolphins safety Jevon Holland tried to lift Hill’s spirits by making light of the unfortunate situation.

“We just work here, just like anybody would get up in the morning and go to work, come back home, and there’s dog [expletive] everywhere,” he said. “Bro,I mean, sometimes you come home, your crib’s on fire. It just is what it is, right? He’s got to handle it and keep it moving.”

Wednesday night, Tagovailoa was named to his first Pro Bowl, and Hill was named to his eighth. Hill becomes the first wide receiver in NFL history to achieve that mark in his first eight years in the league.

It is unclear whether or not Hill and his family will be able to stay in the home for the night.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.

Miami Dolphins prep for historic game in Germany https://wsvn.com/sports/miami-dolphins/miami-dolphins-prep-for-historic-game-in-germany/ Thu, 02 Nov 2023 12:56:06 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1377151 FRANKFURT, Germany (WSVN) — The Miami Dolphins are gearing up for a historic showdown in Frankfurt, Germany, as they prepare to face the Kansas City Chiefs in Sunday’s week 9 match-up. The anticipation is high, with star players Tua Tagovailoa and Tyreek Hill in the MVP conversation.

To ensure they’re in peak form for the game, the Dolphins made an early departure to Germany on Monday night to acclimate and adjust to the time difference. Their focus is on having a productive week of practice leading up to the big kickoff.

“You’re gonna do right by it by putting forth your best effort of work and diligence throughout the week so that whatever it is, it is our best version of ourselves on Sunday,” said Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel.

The game will take place at Deutsche Bank Park, marking the first-ever NFL game in Frankfurt. Tagovailoa expressed excitement about the potential fan support from Germany.

“I don’t know how many people from Germany watch American football or doesn’t so, that’s what I would say I’m excited about for the fans,” said Tagovailoa. “I’d like to know what they’d be cheering for.”

The unique experience of playing in a foreign country was appreciated by Dolphins safety, Jevon Holland, who said, “It’s new, it’s different, and I’m definitely enjoying myself.”

Linebacker Jaelan Phillips echoed the sentiment, appreciating the culture and history of the city and the warm welcome from the people.

“The history is just something that’s really cool to me,” he said. “I think the food is great. Yesterday we were wandering around the city. We had some age, had some beer. But I just think the culture and everything is just amazing. People have been super fun and welcoming.”

The game kicks off at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, coinciding with the end of daylight savings time. Vegas has listed the Chiefs as one-point favorites over the Dolphins, adding an extra layer of excitement to this historic match-up.

Former NFL star Robert Bailey honors daughter’s memory with foundation for suicide awareness https://wsvn.com/sports/former-nfl-star-robert-bailey-honors-daughters-memory-with-foundation-for-suicide-awareness/ Mon, 11 Sep 2023 14:11:55 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1358362 Sunday marked Suicide Prevention Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of mental health and suicide prevention. In honor of this day, the efforts of Robert Bailey, a former prep star in Miami and NFL veteran, were highlighted in an interview.

Bailey’s journey from a successful NFL career to becoming a leading agent at Rosenhaus Sports took a turn when his daughter, Kennedy Bailey, tragically passed away last year. In her memory, he and fellow sports agent Drew Rosenhaus are collaborating on a foundation event, the Kennedy Kids Foundation Inaugural 5K run, focused on suicide awareness and mental health.

Kennedy Kids Foundation is set to host the 5K run in Miami Shores on Sunday, September 17. The event aims to engage families, teenagers, and the community at large in a meaningful conversation about mental health, social media’s impact, and the importance of addressing depression. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m., with the 5K race starting at 7:30 a.m.

In a heartfelt interview, Bailey emphasized the importance of recognizing signs of mental health struggles in young people.

“Kids tend to be sad. They tend to stay away from the dinner table, they come in and go straight to their room, they get on social media, and they kind of isolate themselves from the family,” he said.

He urged parents to ask tough questions and seek help when needed.

Reflecting on the past 12 months since Kennedy’s passing, Bailey expressed gratitude for the immense support he and his family have received from the community. He underlined the importance of preventing similar tragedies and encouraged those seeking more information to visit the Kennedy Kids website, where people can access valuable resources and stay informed about the organization’s programs.

The Kennedy Kids Foundation’s mission extends beyond the event, with a commitment to spreading awareness, providing support, and ultimately preventing other families from enduring the pain and loss that Bailey’s family has experienced.

Anyone interested in signing up for the 5K run in support of the Kennedy Kids Foundation is encouraged to click the link here for more information.

Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill resolves dispute with South Florida marina worker https://wsvn.com/sports/tyreek-hills-allegations-of-alleged-assault-at-south-florida-marina-reaches-civil-settlement/ Mon, 24 Jul 2023 20:47:34 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1341830 MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill has resolved his dispute with a man he was accused of assaulting at a marina.

Hill’s attorney and the lawyer for the man, who works for a charter company at Haulover Marina in Miami, released a statement to ESPN on Monday.

“The parties to the incident which occurred on June 18th, 2023 at the Haulover Marina involving Tyreek Hill have resolved their differences,” read the joint statement provided by Evan Feldman, the attorney for the employee of the Kelly Fleet Inc., and Julius Collins, Hill’s attorney.

Hill had been under investigation by Miami-Dade police for assault and battery after it was reported that he got into an argument with the employee, which apparently ended with Hill hitting the man.

The NFL reportedly requested video footage from the incident.

Hill, a 29-year-old All-Pro, will begin his second training camp with the Miami Dolphins this week. He led the Dolphins with 119 receptions for 1,710 yards in 2022.

Celebrity volunteers interact with children at Boys & Girls Club in West Park https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/celebrity-volunteers-interact-with-children-at-boys-girls-club-in-west-park/ Wed, 28 Jun 2023 12:57:46 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1332790 A group of children from a Broward County Boys & Girls Club spent a day of play with Super Bowl NFL legend Tom Brady, Super Bowl Champion Odell Beckham Jr. and Grammy Award winner DJ Khaled.

On Tuesday, the global digital sports platform Fanatics hosted a Merch Madness giveaway event for the children at the Carver Ranches Boys & Girls Club where the celebrity volunteers interacted with the children and handed out bags of college gear to the youths of the club.

One girl said she wanted to be just like Brady when she grows up as he is a role model and inspiration to her. Other youngsters showed off their college clothing that was given to them, as a reminder that university is always an option for them.

Matt Organ, the co-CEO of the Boys & Girls Club, said there are people in the world to support the youths of the community.

“We give them hope. [I think] that’s the greatest thing we can give our young people is hope,” said Organ. “So when I see celebrities or VIPs come through these doors, or just anybody for that matter who cares about them to give them hope, it’s just powerful.”

Beckham Jr. threw the football around with the younglings and interacted with them. He said his reason for volunteering is because he remembered when he met a star NFL quarterback in his younger days.

“I met quarterback Mike Vick when I was living in Atlanta,” said the Ravens wide receiver. “I was playing at halftime for the three minutes you get to play and he came up to me after. We took a picture and he showed me love. I never forgot that moment.”

DJ Khaled said the event wasn’t about the celebrity spectacle, but rather, the children.

“The kids are the future and they are now,” said the musician. “We have to remind them how great they are and let them know we are here for them to help them and uplift them, but at the same time, bring joy.”

The event was part of Fanatics’ annual Global Volunteer Day where the company paused operations and allowed employees to volunteer and give back to their local communities.

Fanatics’ Global Volunteer Day saw more than 4,000 employees across 10 countries volunteer in their local communities.

2 Super Bowl quarterbacks share their fathers’ inspiration https://wsvn.com/sports/2-super-bowl-quarterbacks-share-their-fathers-inspiration/ Sun, 12 Feb 2023 14:25:30 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1278967 Two quarterbacks are facing off at the Super Bowl LVII, but two fathers who will be off the field have made a huge impact on this game.

Patrick Mahomes Jr. and Jalen Hurts both have fathers who have inspired them to be the people they are today.

“I’m not the man I am on the field and off the field,” said Jalen. “The quarterback I am, the leader I am. I’m none of that without him.”

“My dad, means the world to me, man,” said Mahomes Jr. “I mean, he set an example for me of how you have to go through this business.”

Patrick Mahomes Sr. had an 11-year Major League Baseball career and taught his son how to be a pro and how to persevere through adversity.

“He dealt with a lot of positives. He was in the MLB at an early age, but he also battled in the minor leagues for a long time, and he just kept following his dream and following his dream, and he was able to make it to a World Series,” said Mahomes Jr. “It showed me that no matter if you’re not having success at that moment, if you continue to follow your dreams, you’ll make it.”

Mahomes Sr. shared how he supported his son.

“I just try to make sure that he knows that I’m in his corner, I’m going to be there. As long as he goes out there and does the best he can, he’ll never hear a gripe from me,” he said.

Averion Hurts was his son’s high school football coach, and Jalen has been learning about leadership from his father since the days he was just the ball boy for his father’s teams.

“It’s a blessing to watch a young man that developed a passion for his sport and really, really worked hard at everything at every turn,” said Averion.

Jalen shared what his father meant to him in an interview.

“I feel like I’m a direct reflection of him and a spitting image of him in so many ways, and I love him and I respect him for how tough he was on me., how honest he was with me and the man he raised,” he said.

The love and support these Super Bowl star quarterbacks received from their dads shaped them into great leaders in their own right, and not just for their teams.

Mahomes Jr. is now a father of two as he leads and guides his kin.

Jalen is not a father, but he is aware of the influence he can have on the next generation.

“You don’t really realize the impact you’re doing until you reflect on it and, I think, to have these opportunities and be able to represent so many different people, it’s something I definitely have in my heart when I’m out there playing,” said Jalen. “You know, I definitely never forget where I come from, and most importantly, I know there are kids out there watching. Always kids out there watching.”

Super Bowl LVII flyover show set to make history with first all-woman flight crew https://wsvn.com/sports/super-bowl-lvii-flyover-show-set-to-make-history-with-first-all-woman-flight-crew/ Sat, 11 Feb 2023 15:17:35 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1278744 GLENDALE, Ariz. (WSVN) — As the Super Bowl weekend gets underway, a group of women fighter pilots is preparing to be part of the pregame festivities for the first time ever.

They are set to soar into history as they take part in the stadium flyover.

The U.S. Navy showed the aircraft set to take flight over State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona on Sunday. For the first in NFL history, the flyover will feature seven women.

One of the women, U.S. Navy Lt. Kathryn Martinez, joined the Navy in 2014, following in the footsteps of her grandfathers and dad.

“There are 50 years of women in naval aviation so, 50 years ago, the first female pilot earned her wings, and now we have an entire Super Bowl flyover of women,” she said.

Martinez is a WSO, which she said stands for “weapons systems officer.”

But on Sunday, she will be sitting in the back seat of a FA-18F.

Lt. Jacqueline Drew is also flying.

“I currently fly the F-35C,” she said.

Her love for the Navy started in high school and after the Naval Academy, she landed her seat in flight school.

“While I was in flight school, turns out, I enjoyed going fast, so jets seemed like a good fit,” said Drew.

For Lt. Lyndsay Evans, her mother’s work at NASA led her to fly the EA-18G Growler.

“If you’ve ever seen ‘Top Gun,’ I’m essential, like, Goose’s equivalent,” she said.

She’s an EWO, which Evans said stands for an “electronic warfare officer.”

“We pretty much control the weapons systems on the aircraft,” she said.

The diamond-shaped formation will include two FA-18F Super Hornet fighter jets, one F-35C Lightning II stealth combat aircraft and one EA-18G Growler electronic attack jet, which will depart from nearby Luke Air Force Base.

Their time on target is to be over the stadium on the last notes of the national anthem.

“If we’re going a little slower, it’s going to be a little louder, as those jet engines stay over, parked over the stadium a little bit longer. If we’re going a little bit faster, they’ll get a bit of a quicker show,” said Martinez.

“We’ll have a crew on the ground, both here at Luke Air Force Base and at the stadium itself, on the radios, giving real-time feedback to the pilots,” said Drew.

All of the pilots will fly at 300 knots; that’s six miles per minute, just feet apart.

“Probably anywhere from, like, five to 10 feet away, maybe closer; depends on how feisty you feel that day,” said Evans

For these women, this experience is once in a lifetime.

“If you want to do this, it’s possible,” said Evans.

Martinez said she is excited and nervous.

One of the Navy sailors supporting the flyover is a Fort Lauderdale native.

After the flyover, all seven women will be attending Super Bowl LVII.

Tua Tagovailoa’s parents share hopeful update on son’s progress https://wsvn.com/sports/tua-tagovailoas-parents-share-hopeful-update-on-sons-progress/ Thu, 26 Jan 2023 23:32:47 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1273541 HONOLULU, Hi. (WSVN) — We have an update on the Miami Dolphins’ star quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa.

His parents are opening up about his progress in concussion protocol.

This is the first time we are hearing an update on Tagovailoa in a month.

Per the NFL’s concussion protocol, a player cannot speak publicly until he is medically cleared. However, Tagovailoa’s parents are optimistic that he can make a full recovery following at least three head injuries this past season.

The question on fans’ minds is whether Tagovailoa will be healthy enough to play in the 2023 season.

His parents answered that at the high school Polynesian Bowl in Honolulu, Hawaii.

“He comes back, you know what I’m saying,” said Tagovailoa’s father, Galu Tagovailoa, “and that’s their guy. I mean, they love him. We love him and what they’re doing and how they’re helping him with his recovery.”

This echoes what Dolphins general manager Chris Grier said on Jan. 16.

His mother shared her gratitude for all the support they received after he suffered the concussions that cut his best season short.

“Across the globe, everyone was just praying in agreement for his healing and just for our healing as well,” said mom Diane Tagovailoa.

His father said his son is still going through the concussion protocol, but mentally, he’s in high spirits.

“And that’s the most important thing, as parents, you like to see your kid’s smile on their face when you walk into the house,” he said.

May 1 is a very important date. That is the deadline for the Dolphins to pick up Tagovailoa’s fifth year option that would guarantee him some financial security past next season; 2023 is the final year of his four-year rookie deal.

12-year-old Heat fan visiting from Argentina hoping to see Jimmy Butler play, granted meet and greet https://wsvn.com/sports/12-year-old-heat-fan-visiting-from-argentina-hoping-to-see-jimmy-butler-play-granted-meet-and-greet/ Wed, 25 Jan 2023 22:52:50 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1273093 A 12-year-old boy who traveled to South Florida from South America with his family scored big at a Miami Heat game after they received some disappointing news.

Felipe Velazquez and his sister Zoe Velazquez flew 4,405 miles from Argentina to Miami to see the basketball team and his favorite player, Jimmy Butler, at Tuesday night’s game.

But when they arrived at the Miami-Dade Arena, the family learned Butler would not be playing.

The team came up with a plan to turn the child’s frown upside down.

What followed was a once-in-a-lifetime moment that shows the power of sport and how basketball can bring people together from every part of the world.

https://twitter.com/MiamiHEAT/status/1618264080573399041?s=20&t=PRXrfXktm5X1hyKm89AK6A

At halftime, the Heat recognized the young fans, much to their surprise.

The VIP treatment for the visitors continued on Wednesday, when the Heat brought the family back to the arena to personally meet and spend time with Butler.

The Heat star signed a jersey and took a picture with the entire family.

Butler also gave them a behind-the-scenes tour of the Heat’s locker room, giving them an afternoon with an NBA superstar that they will forever remember.

Analyst and former NBA player Jamal Crawford was the architect behind the encounter after seeing Felipe during the TNT broadcast of the game and reached out to Butler. Crawford and Butler were teammates on the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Shaquille O’Neal also gave an assist. He reached out to Alonzo Mourning to do something special for Felipe and his family.

Hard Rock Stadium selected as 2026 World Cup site https://wsvn.com/sports/hard-rock-stadium-selected-as-2026-world-cup-site/ Thu, 16 Jun 2022 21:39:48 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1157680 It’s official: Miami will be among the host cities for the 2026 World Cup.
https://twitter.com/FIFAWorldCup/status/1537550753023381510

Hard Rock Stadium was selected by FIFA among several other U.S. stadiums to host the tournament, which will be co-hosted by 16 cities across Canada, Mexico and the United States.

In total, 16 cities, spread across the three nations, were selected.

Eleven U.S. stadiums were taken– all from the NFL. Arlington, Texas; East Rutherford, New Jersey; Foxborough, Massachusetts, and Inglewood and Santa Clara, California, were holdover areas from the 1994 tournament that boosted soccer’s American prominence.

Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca, which hosted the 1970 and ’86 finals, will become the first stadium that has hosted three World Cups. It was selected along with Guadalajara’s Estadio Akron and Monterrey’s Estadio BBVA.

Toronto’s BMO Field and Vancouver, British Columbia’s BC Place were picked for Canada’s first time hosting.

The U.S. will host 60 of the 80 games under FIFA’s plan, including all from the quarterfinals on.

In an interview with 7News back in 2018, President of the Miami Dolphins Tom Garfinkel believed the stadium would be a perfect choice, highlighting previous major soccer matches held there.

“We designed it to be a global entertainment destination,” he said, “I think it’s among, if not the best place to view soccer in the world now.”

Fritz and Franz in Coral Gables held a watch party with Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and Miami Mayor Francis Suarez on hand. He is ecstatic that the World Cup is coming to the 305.

“I mean I remember so many different World Cups, we would close down streets so people could watch the team of choice, and now we’re going to have it here. It’s a big deal,” said Suarez.

“This is amazing news for us,” said Cava. “We are the capital of soccer, of futbol, in the United States. It’s going to be a huge boost for us.”

The same with Miami’s own Gloria Estefan.

“So excited, so get ready because the rhythm and Miami is gonna get you,” said Estefan.

The last World Cup held in the United States was in 1994, and this is the first time a joint World Cup will be held between three countries.

“We have already hosted Super Bowls, Formula 1, tennis,” said Cava. “We know how to do this, and it’s going to be great. People are going to love it, they’ll be thronging to come back for more events here.”

This will be the first 48-nation World Cup, up from the 32-team format used since 1998. In a tournament likely to run from June 11 to July 12, but possibly start and end a week later, there will be 16 groups of three nations. Each team will play two first-round games instead of three as part of an awkward arrangement in which one nation in each group opens against an opponent who will have already played. The top two in each group advance to a 32-nation knockout bracket.

Miami Hurricanes name former NFL player Alonzo Highsmith as general manager of football operations https://wsvn.com/sports/miami-hurricanes-name-former-nfl-player-alonzo-highsmith-as-general-manager-of-football-operations/ Mon, 13 Jun 2022 15:35:24 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1155256 To help navigate today’s collegiate landscape, the Miami Hurricanes named Alonzo Highsmith as the general manager of football operations.

Highsmith spoke to 7News to explain his new role.

“Well, I think anything that has to do with football, from helping and recruiting, helping with the coaches, and whatever matter needs my help, mentoring the players, being here for Mario and working with the athletic department, I’m doing kind of like a Quasimodo, doing kind of doing a bit of everything,” said Highsmith.

Highsmith is a part of the University of Miami’s football Hall of Fame, and the university has been trying to bring him back to his alma mater.

“I don’t know, it felt right, I love the NFL, I miss the relationships I had, and I don’t think I would ever do this job for another college other than the University of Miami,” he said. “It’s weird because it’s something I thought was never really going to happen. I didn’t think I could pass this up, and if I did pass up, I didn’t want to look back 15 years from now or 10 years from now or even a year from now saying, ‘Maybe I should have.'”

Highsmith explained how his new role will impact Name Image and Likeness (NIL) deals for players and trying to get players to the university to get them paid as well.

“We’re not involved in that. That is something between NIL and the player who decides to come here,” he said. “We don’t set the number, I can’t say, ‘Come here and you’ll do this’ because that is against NCAA rules or anything like that, and it’s been weird because through this whole recruiting process, we never talked about the NIL. We want you to come here an be a football player.”

Another big change in college football is the transfer portal, which has changed the whole landscape.

With his scouting background, Highsmith explained how he will be involved with that.

“That’s something that’s interesting. I’ve embraced that, and it’s fun looking at players and understanding who is transferring, and it’s kind of like free agency in pro football, but with more guys,” he said. “You realize how much goes on in college football until I got here. Actually, pro football is kind of boring compared to this. This is something that I’m enjoying so far. Like I said, the best way to describe, it’s 24/7, it’s on pro level, and not much goes on. You have things go on, but it’s kind of like the machine that runs itself.”

Throughout his career, Highsmith has several accolades under his belt.

When asked if players recognize who he is, Highsmith said the following:

“They call me old school or they call me coach now, so it’s been fun,” he said. “I’m not a big past guy. I don’t believe in telling the kids about my past, and the only thing I want to mentor these kids in is workout ethic, and teaching them that it’s your time now, it’s your moment, make the most of your moment. Mario is tough. It’s going to be tough here. You’re going to have to work hard. You’re going to have to persevere. You’re going to have to overcome a lot of adversity, but the most important thing about this whole thing is I’ve always believed that anyone that is going to be successful in life is a husband, a father, co-worker, you have to willing to give more of yourself.”

The next step for Highsmith is to get the program back to where it needs to be, which will take hard work.

He is happy to be a part of the program, and his goal is to teach the next generation of players to be great.

Knee injury to sideline Heat’s Butler in Game 5 versus Atlanta https://wsvn.com/sports/knee-injury-to-sideline-heats-butler-in-game-5-versus-atlanta/ Tue, 26 Apr 2022 20:01:32 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1128601 Hours before their Game 5 playoff matchup versus the Atlanta Hawks, the Miami Heat announced the team would be without All-Star Jimmy Butler.

Citing right knee inflammation, the Heat will now be without Butler and Kyle Lowry.

According to a league source, an MRI has not been conducted on Butler’s knee.

Miami Heat Coach Eric Spoelstra told 7News, Butler woke up Monday morning with irritation in his knee and believes he hurt it during Game 4. Then, Tuesday morning, Butler said his knee was not feeling any better. The decision to rest Butler was then made.

https://twitter.com/TheMozKnowz/status/1519040726004375560

Lowry had been ruled out Monday as he battles a hamstring injury he sustained during Game 3. This will be the second game he has sat out.

https://twitter.com/MiamiHEAT/status/1518679397443723264?s=20&t=zaYcVkIUtu5oPPwvLSMibg

Butler has led the Miami Heat throughout the Eastern Conference and has averaged 30.5 points, 7.8 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 2.8 steals within the four games against the Atlanta Hawks. During Game 4 against the Hawks Sunday, he scored 36 points.

He has also become the lead player in the entire Eastern Conference in scoring.

Spoelstra said this is a day to day situation. Therefore if the Heat were to lose Game 4 and have Game 6 in Atlanta, Butler would then be available to play.

A win Tuesday night at FTX Arena would advance Miami to the second round of the playoffs.

UM men’s basketball team to fly out super fan to Elite 8 tournament https://wsvn.com/sports/um-mens-basketball-team-to-fly-out-super-fan-to-elite-8-tournament/ Fri, 25 Mar 2022 02:55:24 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1109549 The University of Miami men’s basketball team is giving a sweet assist to a teenage fan before their biggest game of the year. The team is calling him their secret weapon.

The ‘Canes are in Chicago looking to advance to the program’s first-ever appearance in the Elite 8, and one lucky super fan will get to cheer on Miami in person.

It was a huge surprise for 14-year-old Brennon. He scored a trip to Chicago for Friday’s Sweet 16 game against Iowa State.

“What do you think, Brennon? Can you come to Chicago and cheer us on? Bring us some good luck this weekend?” said Coach Jim Larrañaga.

“Oh, yeah,” said the members of UM’s men’s basketball team.

Brennon has a heart condition and was matched with the UM’s men’s basketball team through a nonprofit called Team Impact, which pairs kids facing serious illnesses with college teams across the country.

Thanks to the organization, Brennon will be able to spend the weekend with the Hurricanes and cheer them to victory.

Brennon has been rooting for the ‘Canes throughout March Madness 2022.

“Let’s go, ‘Canes! I know you guys got this. We’re gonna win the NCAA Tournament and beat every team there is. Let’s go, ‘Canes!” said Brennon.

Now, the teen is confident the ‘Canes will make it to the Final Four.

“Bring ’em on, woo! Bring ’em on baby, woo,” said Brennon. “I know you guys can make it. There’s no doubt about it. You guys have fought. You guys just beat Auburn, and it’s – it was surreal, guys.”

“All right, Brennon, we’ll see you in Chicago,” said Larrañaga.

Brennon and his father are flying up to Chicago on Friday.

The University of Miami vs. Iowa State game begins approximately at 10 p.m.

Mike McDaniel makes debut as Miami Dolphins head coach https://wsvn.com/sports/mike-mcdaniel-makes-debut-as-miami-dolphins-head-coach/ Thu, 10 Feb 2022 18:26:06 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1081885 Mike McDaniel made his Dolphins debut on Thursday morning.

South Florida got the chance to hear from the head coach for the first time since he took over the position.

The fun, energetic 38-year-old has a dry sense of humor that he hopes will translate to the young Miami Dolphins players.

He hopes to build the team to win their first playoff game in over 20 years.

McDaniel is now the 14th head coach of the Miami Dolphins.

https://twitter.com/TheMozKnowz/status/1491792242394034178

He’s bringing his style of football to the 305.

“Miami Dolphins football is all about passion, energy. You should be able to turn on the TV and know who the team is, even if the color is distorted, by the energy that they play with, by how they bond together, things that you only get true work and bond together,” said McDaniel. “It’s a team sport, and we’re going to play as a team, and I promise you that, we’ll feel that.”

Stephen Ross said McDaniel was his guy all along. However, there is still a cloud hanging over the team.

Former head coach Brian Flores alleges Ross is guilty of tanking and tampering in a class action lawsuit filed last week in New York.

McDaniel was asked during the media conference how the impending lawsuit impacted his decision to accept the job.

“I can honestly say there were absolutely no red flags,” he said, “and the reason why was because I was stepping into an organization with a boss that I don’t think people give him its proper due. Stephen Ross, there’s no cost too high for winning for him. The City of Miami really is lucky to have an owner, right, wrong or indifferent, all he cares about is winning. As a coach, that is all you’re literally looking for.”

Ross and general manager Chris Grier spoke at the conference and introduced McDaniel but were not available for comment on the lawsuit.

New Dolphins head coach speaks out on his game plan since being hired https://wsvn.com/sports/new-dolphins-head-coach-speaks-out-on-his-game-plan-since-being-hired/ Wed, 09 Feb 2022 04:04:14 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1080679 A new era is officially underway in Miami!

The new Dolphins head coach spoke about his game plan Tuesday for the first time since being hired.

It was a private plane ride from the West Coast that landed Mike McDaniel in the MIA.

Then it was off to the practice facility to officially put the pen to the paper, signing his new head coaching contract.

Now, Mike McDaniel is settling in to his new office, new city and new team.

“To be here, in this place with these people, I couldn’t be happier,” said McDaniel.

McDaniel, quick to contact quarterback Tua Tungoviaolia.

“I just had to get on with you real quick,” said McDaniel on his phone call with Tungoviaolia. “We’re gonna have an extensive professional relationship, my man. One thing I know about you is you have the ambition to be great. My job is to coach you to get all that greatness out of you.”

McDaniel also explained what he likes most on the onset about this roster.

“The fact that there’s a lot of skill, there’s a lot of youth, energy, but there’s also a lot of coaching to be done. You want an opportunity to build the culture. It’s the best thing that you can hope for, is having a bunch of talent that is ready to go to work, which is all we have, and I’m not sure if you checked my title, but there’s a coach in it,” said McDaniel.

7News will meet with McDaniel at his introductory press conference later in the week.

UM: Hurricanes out of Sun Bowl due to COVID protocols https://wsvn.com/sports/um-hurricanes-out-of-sun-bowl-due-to-covid-protocols/ Mon, 27 Dec 2021 01:07:14 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1055180 The Miami Hurricanes will be unable to take part in the 2021 Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl against Washington State due to COVID-19 protocols, university officials said.

Miami Athletics confirmed the news in a statement issued Sunday.

“Due to the number of COVID-19 cases impacting our roster, we do not have enough student-athletes to safely compete, and the health and safety of our student-athletes will always be our top priority,” said Deputy Director of Athletics/Chief Operating Officer Jennifer Strawley.

The Sun Bowl, which would have pitted UM’s football team against the Washington State Cougars, had been scheduled to take place on Dec. 31 in El Paso, Texas.

“This team worked hard all season to earn a bowl invitation and my heart goes out to our student-athletes, especially our seniors,” said Strawley. “I also want to thank Interim Head Coach Jess Simpson and our football staff for all of their efforts in preparation for this bowl game.”

Florida teen athlete with disability goes viral with slam dunk at basketball competition https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/florida-teen-athlete-with-disability-goes-viral-with-slam-dunk-at-basketball-competition/ Wed, 22 Dec 2021 02:45:57 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1052830 KISSIMMEE, Fla. (WSVN) — A Florida teenage athlete proved he is a hot shot on the basketball court.

It’s not the first time he’s shined on the court. Now, Hansel Enmanuel Donato is once again getting plenty of likes and shares on social media for his flair and mad skills.

Earlier this month, Donato dominated the basketball court at his high school in Kissimmee.

The 17-year-old, who has an amputated arm, has gone viral for beating the odds.

He made the award-winning shot at the City of Palms Classic basketball competition in Fort Myers, Monday.

The teen’s slam dunk even made it on SportsCenter.

“I’ll make it as far as God allows me to, because I put no limits on myself,” said Donato, “and anything you say I can’t do, I’ll do it three times better.”

“It was one of those head-turning moments when he first took the court where you realize how special he was,” said broadcaster John Vittas.

Former NBA All-Star Ron Harper saw the video and had nothing but praise for him.

So did fans in the stands.

“Doing that with one arm is pretty awesome,” said attendee Charlie Devone.

Donato lost his arm when he was in elementary school in the Dominican Republic, but he refused to let that stop him from playing the game he loves.

“It’s hard to have something like that happen as a kid,” said Donato. “It’s hard to recover, and it’s frustrating, but God and the dream to be like my dad inspires me.”

“I said it on the air, he has eliminated a disability, which obviously is hard to do,” said Vittas.

From living in one of the poorest neighborhoods in the Dominican Republic, to trending on social media, Donato hopes others see his determination and believe they can do anything, no matter what.

The ensuing video, which aired as part of Smith’s YouTube series “The Best Shape of My Life,” shows Tagovailoa and Smith excited to be training together.

Both men embraced, then began working out. At one point, Tagovailoa taught the Oscar nominee the proper way to hold and throw a football.

“It’s however you want to pick it up and however it feels comfortable for you,” said Tagovailoa.

After passing the ball around, they even got into some friendly competition by seeing who could hit the Miami Dolphins logo.

Miami Heat players prepare for preseason, welcome All-Star Kyle Lowry https://wsvn.com/sports/miami-heat-players-prepare-for-preseason-welcome-all-star-kyle-lowry/ Mon, 27 Sep 2021 17:24:38 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1000647 Miami Heat players are preparing for the NBA season.

Kyle Lowry will be joining the roster this season.

A preseason game is set to take place on Oct. 4 against the Atlanta Hawks.

“I’m here to be a pro, I’m ready to get it done and I’m ready to do my job at a high level,” said Lowry. “It’s not about talking, it’s about action and I think having a lot of veteran guys and having a lot of professionals it makes your job a lot easier. We know what it is. We know what we’re here for and we know what we want to try and do and that’s our goal.”

Jimmy Butler is giving Lowry a Miami bad boys welcome.

“There’s your Mike Lowry. Do I wear a headband in the game? Don’t know,” said Jimmy Butler. “Will I take a fine and wear one of those ones that you’re not supposed to wear? Who knows? If I do get fined, Kyle is going to pay it.”

Head coach Erik Spoelstra feels Lowry brings another element to the team that will make them an immediate finals contender.

“I think Kyle is one of the ultimate winners in this league,” Spoelstra said, “but I think his career is defined by his work ethic, his leadership, but his ability to impact winning I think is really unique. His mind for the game is as high as anybody in the league and I’m looking forward to learning from him.”

Pairing Butler and Lowry with Bam Adebayo will be dangerous on the court. In his words, the Miami Heat team is already in sync.

“With all of us, it’s a good energy, like everybody can connect with one another in our individual ways,” Adebayo said. “It’s just great to see everybody be able to sync with one another even though we’re all different.”

Florida Panthers welcome back defenseman Aaron Ekblad after leg injury https://wsvn.com/sports/florida-panthers-welcome-back-defenseman-aaron-ekblad-after-leg-injury/ Mon, 27 Sep 2021 14:48:28 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1000524 The Florida Panthers welcomed back defenseman Aaron Ekblad this season.

The former number one overall pick by the franchise in 2014 suffered a season-ending leg injury last March that forced him to miss the playoffs.

Now, Ekblad is back with renewed energy, purpose and desire to play the game after it was taken away.

“It’s crazy,” Ekblad said. “Really excited, obviously, to be back. Being with the boys is the best part about playing in the NHL. To be back on the ice and in full stride, kind of a dream come true, obviously.”

When asked what the most difficult part of his journey back was, he said, “The first two weeks, obviously the pain of the surgery is incredible. Had a hard time managing that pain early on, but I was able to get through it, you know, with ease. For the first two, three weeks it was tough, but after that when I was able to move around and come to games and see the guys, that was a big milestone to get through.”

When asked where he was and how he handled watching the playoffs, Ekblad said, “Well, I was at every game. I watched down here and did rehab in between periods and watched during the game. I wasn’t able to do anything about it but I tried my best to stay engaged. It was great to watch and get that different perspective. I don’t ever want to do that again. I’d like to play and be on the ice as much as I can.”

When asked how special it was to be playing on a team among all-stars, he said, “Well, beyond that, up and down the lineup is great, not just us three. We have an unbelievable team. On paper, we have to show out this year and one of the main messages, I think, is it’s not gonna be easy just ’cause we did it last year. We wanna be sure that we’re taking every game one by one and giving it our all.”

Given what he had to endure, Ekblad shared how he helped his teammates: “I mean, it was a little different being out and coming back and that kind of emotion, the rest of the room is hungry. They know what they left on the table last year and we have to chase and the new opportunity that comes with this season.”

When asked if he likes being considered the top-five team, he said, “In house, we never wanna overrate ourselves. We wanna come in with that hunger and, like I said, it’s a new opportunity, it’s exciting and it’s great to be highly regarded, but with that comes kind of a target, right? Every game is difficult. No one’s gonna take you lightly. No one’s coming to South Florida to sit in the sun. They’re coming to play us and they’re gonna be ready.”
