All across the region, celebrations are planned Wednesday, from Fort Lauderdale to Miami and even all the way down to the Florida Keys.

The Big Orange will rise in downtown Miami, it will be anchors away in Fort Lauderdale, and the shoe will drop in the Keys, as tens of thousands of revelers ring in 2026.

At Bayfront Park, the Big Orange — a 35-foot, 2,000-pound LED sculpture — will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a 400-foot rise to the top of the InterContinental Miami at midnight. The iconic “Mr. Neon” will begin its ascent at 6 p.m.

An estimated 100,000 people attended last year’s event at Bayfront Park in what organizers called the “biggest Hispanic New Year’s Eve gathering in the country.”

In true Miami fashion, South Florida didn’t wait for midnight to start the party.

There’s no better place than Miami to celebrate New Year’s, no better place. We had to be here,” said a woman.

Some came from across the world to celebrate in the 305.

“I’m from Zimbabwe. 20 hours in the plane,” said one woman.

The Miami skyline will be lit up by thousands of fireworks synchronized with music the second midnight strikes.

Great views aren’t the only thing partygoers will get to see at night.

Willy Chirino, Flo Rida, and Marshmello are all scheduled to perform Wednesday night.

“We’ve got a fusion of Latin hip hop, all the talent of South Florida is gonna be out here tonight,” said a man.

“I’m very excited to see Marshmello,” said a woman.

The crowds will have several bites available to eat as they enjoy the beats throughout the night.

All of the excitement will lead up to the moment everyone is waiting for.

“Two minutes ’til, we’ll raise it to the top,” said Steve Carpenter, the designer of the Big Orange.

The iconic orange will make its climb up the side of the InterContinental at 11:58 p.m. for everyone to begin counting down.

“It’s free to the public, so anybody and everybody can come down and see it and they have food trucks and they have bands, it’s amazing,” said Carpenter.

The party in downtown Miami is expected to carry on past midnight.

In downtown Fort Lauderdale, a 900-pound anchor made of steel and covered in 5,000 LED lights will slowly drop as the clock strikes midnight. The anchor was chosen to reflect the city as the marine capital of the world.

“We’re here to celebrate the New Year and say goodbye to the old year,” said Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis.

As with years past, kids got to start ringing in the New Year early in the afternoon.

“There’ll be activities for kids, there’ll be kiosks for food, it’s gonna be a great festival for everyone to enjoy,” said Trantalis.

“We’re gonna have a DJ on stage, we’ll have a bunch of inflatables over here in the park. We’re gonna have pony rides, petting zoos, face painting, arts and crafts,” said Todd Stilphen, the Fort Lauderdale community program manager.

The anchor lit up at 7 p.m. for those that need to be in bed before midnight.

As the night rolled in, the crowds grew and the excitement escalated.

For many visiting from out of state, the mild temperatures made for the perfect time to be outdoors for the countdown.

“This is the best place on earth, I guess, I don’t know,” said a tourist.

As for some of the youngest partygoers, they shared their New Year’s resolutions with 7News as they wait for the anchor to drop.

“I wanna learn to do times,” said one girl.

“Play outside more,” said another girl.

“Eat more veggies,” said a boy.

“I’m gonna practice skateboarding more often,” said another boy.

For anyone looking to head to downtown Fort Lauderdale, officials have Southwest Second Street closed between Southwest Fifth Avenue and Southwest First Avenue, with the surrounding streets restricted to local traffic.

“We’re gonna ring in the New Year, we’ll be safe, we’ll be happy and I hope we’ll be successful for everyone,” said Trantalis.

Officials also said there will be an enhanced police presence during the festivities to ensure everyone’s safety.

In the Keys, a giant red shoe will drop outside the Bourbon Street Pub on Duval Street. Year after year, a drag queen sits inside the supersized heel as a rowdy crowd of revelers gather on the street below.

No matter where you eventually decide to celebrate, officials say they just want you to do it safely.

“The best way to stay safe while celebrating New Year’s is by leaving the fireworks to the experts,” Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokesperson Erika Benitez said. “If you decide to celebrate at home, only buy fireworks from approved vendors and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.”

First responders work to prevent many of the thousands of fireworks-related injuries and fires reported nationwide every year. One way they do this is by reminding revelers to wear protective eyewear, light fireworks on pavement, and keep water or a fire extinguisher nearby.

Better yet, they say, sit back and leave it to the professionals.

“Make sure that you have a sober adult, a sober, responsible adult who is in charge of discharging the fireworks. Make sure you’re shooting the fireworks off of a hard flat surface,” Dan Peart, the Director of Government Affairs for Phantom Fireworks, said. “I know a lot of people are shooting fireworks from their lawn. If it’s possible, you can lay down a piece of plywood to give yourself a hard flat surface, and again, you can brace the items in there if you’re shooting aerial fireworks.”

So, no matter how you decide to celebrate the New Year this year, be sure to do it safely and responsibly.

If you’re going to be outdoors, remember to bring a jacket as temperatures are forecasted to be in the 40s by the time the clock strikes midnight in some parts of South Florida.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue reminds public on the danger of fireworks ahead of New Year’s Eve https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/miami-dade-fire-rescue-reminds-public-on-the-danger-of-fireworks-ahead-of-new-years-eve/ Tue, 30 Dec 2025 23:07:55 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1655623 As South Floridians prepare for New Year’s Eve celebrations, the Miami Dade Fire Rescue is reminding the public about the dangers of mishandled fireworks.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials reminded families to celebrate responsibly, particularly regarding the handling of fireworks.

Proper usage and handling of fireworks can prevent injuries, according to officials.

“The best way to celebrate New Year’s is by leaving the fireworks to the experts, if you decide to celebrate at home, only buy fireworks from approved vendors and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.” said Erika Benitez from Miami Fire Rescue.

Fire Rescue officials recommended to wear protective eyewear, keep water or a fire extinguisher nearby and to light fireworks on paved surfaces.

They also stressed that children should never handle fireworks, even sparklers.

“Sparklers, which are often considered harmless, can burn up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, and it can cause serious burns.” said Benitez. “This temperature is strong enough to melt metals, imagine what it can do to your children’s eyes and hands.”

Meanwhile, the fireworks industry is preparing for a busy few days as the countdown to the end of the year approaches.

“New Year’s is traditionally the second busiest time of the year, the first obviously being the Fourth of July, but specifically in the warm weather states and Florida, especially, it is a very big season for us.” said Dan Peart, director of government affairs of Phantom Fireworks

Peart echoed fire officials’ message on the importance of handling fireworks responsibly.

“Make sure you have a sober adult, a sober, responsible adult who’s in charge of discharging the fireworks. Make sure you’re shooting the fireworks from a hard, flat surface, I know a lot of people are shooting fireworks from their lawn. If it’s possible, you can lay down a piece of plywood to give yourself a hard flat surface, and, again, you can brace the items in there if you’re shooting aerial fireworks.”

As the clock ticks closer to midnight, officials said that a bit of preparation can go a long way.

Driver accused of hitting MDSO deputy at Turnpike crash scene faces felony charge; deputy stable after surgery https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/driver-accused-of-hitting-mdso-deputy-at-turnpike-crash-scene-faces-felony-charge-deputy-stable-after-surgery/ Mon, 29 Dec 2025 13:15:16 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1655134 A driver is facing a felony charge after he was arrested for hitting a deputy on the Florida Turnpike as he drove around the scene of a crash, officials said. The injured deputy is currently in stable condition after undergoing surgery.

According to investigators, Lonnel Brinson did not slow down past the Florida Highway Patrol and Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office vehicles near Northwest 58th Street on the Turnpike, Saturday morning. The suspect, 28, swerved as he tried to avoid the crash and struck MDSO Deputy Leonard Cantave.

Authorities said Cantave was on his way to work on Saturday when he heard a dispatch call about a crash and stopped to help troopers at the scene.

That is when, officials said, Brinson struck the deputy. Deputies said the suspect stayed at the scene of the crash.

Cantave, a 20-year law enforcement veteran, was airlifted to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, where he underwent surgery. Officials later confirmed he was recovering.

“We’re just hoping and praying that he can see his way through this situation,” Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Assistant Sheriff Eric Garcia said at a press conference following the accident.

According to his arrest report, Brinson had admitted to consuming alcohol and marijuana before the crash. He had also been driving with a suspended license.

Brinson was taken to jail and charged with one count of felony reckless driving causing serious injury.

Back at the scene of the crash, Florida Highway Patrol assisted with traffic control as the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office investigated. All lanes of the Turnpike were reopened later in the day.

Authorities urge drivers to slow down and move over when approaching emergency scenes.

“We cannot stress enough how important it is to our motorists, when they’re driving, and they’re approaching a traffic scene, to slow down and to move over, in order to prevent these types of incidents,” Garcia said.

“Our deputy is currently still in ICU, but in stable condition. He has a very long recovery, but we are very grateful that that is what we’re talking about: a recovery,” Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero Stutz said.

Brinson bonded out of jail on Sunday and is expected back in court in February. Cantave remains in stable condition as of Monday morning.

Dog seized by animal control after attack in Riviera Beach that injured 3 https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/dog-seized-by-animal-control-after-attack-in-riviera-beach-that-injured-3/ Wed, 24 Dec 2025 14:15:00 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1654244 RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. (WSVN)– A dog was taken from its owner by animal control after it escaped and attacked three people in a Riviera Beach neighborhood, and a resident’s surveillance camera caught the entire scene.

The surveillance footage captured the moment when the dog charged at the victims as they walked in the neighborhood, Tuesday afternoon.

According to police, the owner left his garage door open, allowing that pet to get out. What happened next left the neighborhood without a sense of safety.

All three victims were transported to the hospital with bite wounds and abrasions suffered while they fought off the canine during the attack, which lasted about a minute.

“I grabbed him so tight, and then I hold on, everybody was there, and then I said, ‘Call 911, call help,'” one victim said.

That is exactly what a neighbor did.

“911, where is your emergency?” a dispatcher said.

“We’re inside the house because we’re worried that [the dog is] going to come and attack us,” the neighbor said.

When officers arrived, the dog was back inside his home. Police said that he had gotten out when his owner forgot to close the garage door.

“That dog was not confined, so it ran out, ran up the street and went after these three people,” police spokesperson Mike Jachles said.

Ion is the neighbor whose security cameras recorded the attack. He said the dog once threatened him as he left to pick up his children.

“Three minutes later, my dad calls me like, ‘Oh, Ion, people are screaming here. The dog attacked the people,'” Ion said.

Animal Care and Control arrived at the scene and took custody of the dog from the owner.

The owner did not want to go on camera, but said the dog is a 1-year-old named Enzo. He said Enzo is sweet and playful and doesn’t understand what happened.

Police said they’re lucky the outcome of the attack wasn’t worse.

“They fear that, had it been a child or just one person, it could have been a much more brutal attack, because this dog had a lot of power and was very aggressive,” Jachles said.

“I had two boys, 5 and 6. God forbid. I don’t even know what I would have done,” Ion said. “It’s sad to see this kind of stuff, but it’s scary at the same time.”

Enzo’s owner hopes to have Enzo returned home, but according to police, animal control officials will decide what happens to the dog.

Woman dead, subject hospitalized after stabbing at Oakland Park apartment complex https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/woman-dead-subject-hospitalized-after-stabbing-at-oakland-park-apartment-complex/ Tue, 23 Dec 2025 11:49:52 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1653830 A stabbing at an apartment complex in Oakland Park left a woman dead and sent the man responsible to the hospital, authorities said.

Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of a domestic incident near the 100 block of Northeast 41st Street and First Terrace at around 1 a.m. on Tuesday.

Responding deputies arrived to find the woman suffering from stab wounds inside a corner unit on the first floor of the apartment building. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said deputies made contact with the subject, identified as 37-year-old Mario Alejandro Ramirez, who was suffering from a self-inflicted wound. Deputies struggled with him while applying pressure to stop the bleeding.

Deputies were able to control Ramirez and take him into custody, detectives said.

7DroneForce captured part of the complex cordoned off with crime scene tape.

On the ground, 7News cameras captured crime scene investigators near a stairwell and outside a first floor unit.

Residents say they are shocked to hear what happened.

“I see like a body laying on the floor and I was like, ‘What’s going on?'” said an area resident.

“Definitely shocked to hear that,” said a man.

Neighbors said they witnesses investigators walking around the apartment complex throughout the night and were asked questions by the officials.

“Asking us if we heard anything, if we knew the neighbors and such,” said the resident.

Paramedics with Oakland Park Fire Rescue transported Ramirez to Broward Health Medical Center for treatment. His condition is unknown.

Crime scene investigators spent hours investigating the first floor unit, as they collected evidence and attempted to piece together the circumstances that led up to the stabbing.

Early Tuesday morning, the medical examiner’s office responded to the scene and removed the woman’s body from the apartment unit on a stretcher.

Ramirez now faces one count of murder in the second degree.

Detectives have not released information on how the two were related as the investigation continues.

Hundreds wait in line as Knaus Berry Farm’s new location opens under new management https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/hundreds-wait-in-line-as-knaus-berry-farms-new-location-opens-under-new-management/ Mon, 22 Dec 2025 14:07:06 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1653486 A sweet tradition of South Florida’s holiday season has arrived just in time for Christmas, as Knaus Berry Farm reopened its doors for the season — this time at a new location under new management.

7News cameras captured a long line of several hundred customers extending the parking lot of Knaus Berry Farm’s new location at 16790 SW 177th Ave., off Krome Avenue in Southwest Miami-Dade, just after 7 a.m. on Monday.

The beloved South Florida staple, now located a little north of their original location, opened to the public about an hour later, following months of anticipation, and will remain open until 5:30 p.m.

“This is really awesome, to see the passion people have for this business. That they’re here this early in the morning is just a tribute to what Knaus has built, the tradition they’ve had for 70 years,” said Joel White, Knaus Berry Farm’s new partner and general manager.

The location may be new, but White said the homemade recipes for their signature cinnamon rolls and strawberry shakes, the same ones that have kept Floridians coming back since 1956, haven’t changed.

“We’re really passionate about keeping the tradition going. We have the same menu, exact same items. We’re really excited; we have about 90% of the same staff in our kitchen,” said White. “The bakers, they have about 100 years of baking experience with Knaus. When people join here, they stay for a long time, which is awesome.”

Customers coming to purchase their comfort-food goodies will find a lot of it looks very similar to Knaus’ original location.

“We brought over the shake stand from the old location, so it’s literally the same shake stand. We brought over a lot of the ovens, so I think people will be pleased when they’re able to taste the products,” said White.

First in line Monday morning was a woman who came with her youngest daughter. She said she arrived at 8 p.m. on Sunday.

“Family tradition, I’ve been doing it for 40 years with my dad,” she said. “I mean, I’ve known the people who [owned Knaus Berry Farm], the parents and everything.”

She added that she will try to ensure the sweet treats she buys Monday last until Christmas Day.

Joann Jackson drove down all the way from Dania Beach with one mission in mind.

“I’m here for the cinnamon rolls that are amazing. If you could have Smell-O-Vision, smell it,” she said.

For many, coming to Knaus Berry Farm is more than just biting into a cinnamon role; it’s a taste of home that no words can describe.

“It’s yummy good, it’s so beyond good,” said Jackson.

After hours of waiting, the moment finally arrived: warm, gooey cinnamon rolls, passed out one at a time, turning anticipation into payoff.

“[Getting here at] 4 a.m. paid off. I got my cinnamon rolls,” said Jackson.

“Amazing, same delicious taste,” said the woman who was first in line.

Knaus Berry Farm will be open Christmas Eve but will remain closed Christmas Day. Under the new management, they’ll be open Sundays as well, and they now accept credit cards. For more information, click here.

Good Samaritan speaks out after stopping armed sexual battery, kidnapping at Hialeah apartment complex https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/good-samaritan-speaks-out-after-stopping-armed-sexual-battery-kidnapping-at-hialeah-apartment-complex/ Tue, 16 Dec 2025 18:34:49 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1651405 A Hialeah man is speaking out sharing his story days after, he said, he came to the rescue of a woman who was being attacked in an apartment building, leading to her assailant’s arrest.

Speaking with 7News on Tuesday, Andy Plaza said he’s happy he took action to come to his neighbor’s aid.

“I’m glad I came outside, you know, to assess her, and I’m glad I followed my instincts,” he said.

According to Hialeah Police, the victim was sexually attacked at knifepoint inside the laundry room of the apartment complex located along West Okeechobee Road, Dec. 9.

The woman’s screams alerted Plaza, who immediately sprang into action.

Plaza’s instincts and quick actions saved his neighbor from a terrifying situation.

“It was around 2:30 in the morning, and I hear a scream; it came down from the laundry room, so I went to check it out,” he said.

The good Samaritan arrived to what was a brutal assault inside the laundry room.

“She was just pushed against it, and the guy was leaning behind her with her pants down,” said Plaza. “He had a knife close to her body.”

Plaza said the man took off running when he realized that he wasn’t alone.

Detectives used surveillance video from the area, and days later, were able to track down her attacker, whom they identified as 21-year-old Luis Rodas-Martinez.

“Through video surveillance, our detectives were able to find videos, still images of him, and work in the streets, were able to identify him,” said Hialeah Police Lt. Eddie Rodriguez.

Rodas-Martinez was arrested and charged with attempted sexual battery and kidnapping with a weapon. He appeared before Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy S. Glazer on Monday.

“He’s using a knife to try and forcefully sexually batter the victim,” said Glazer as she read the police report.

Plaza said his neighbor was shaken but grateful and told him that his actions saved her.

“She wanted to thank my wife, you know, my mother-in-law, that I pretty much saved her life,” he said.

While Rodas-Martinez sits behind bars, police said they fear more victims who have not yet come forward could still be out there.

“As an abundance of caution, we are asking the community, take a look at him. If you feel that you’ve been a victim of this man, please contact detectives as soon as possible,” said Rodriguez.

If you or someone you know believes to be a victim of Rodas-Martinez, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.

Hialeah man charged with attempted armed sexual battery, kidnapping in laundry room attack, police say https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/hialeah-man-charged-with-attempted-armed-sexual-battery-kidnapping-in-laundry-room-attack-police-say/ Mon, 15 Dec 2025 21:50:46 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1650929 A 21-year-old Hialeah man was arrested and charged with attempted armed sexual battery and armed kidnapping after police say he attacked a woman at an apartment complex laundry room earlier this month, according to authorities.

Luis Antonio Rodas-Martinez was taken into custody Sunday at his home at 1255 West Okeechobee Road following an investigation by the Hialeah Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit.

According to the arrest report, officers were dispatched shortly after 2:30 a.m. on Dec. 9 to investigate an attempted armed sexual battery.

The victim told police she was doing laundry when Rodas-Martinez approached her armed with a knife, pinned her against a washer, and held the weapon to her upper torso while attempting to forcefully remove her clothing and sexually assault her against her will, the report states.

“The victim was inside her laundry room, inside her complex, when Rodas walks in, armed with a knife, pushes her up against the machine and attempts to rape her,” said Hialeah Police Lt. Eddie Rodriguez.

Investigators said the victim began yelling for help, drawing the attention of a nearby witness who saw the suspect holding the victim against the washer with a knife before fleeing through the parking lot.

Police said surveillance video from the area captured images of the suspect, and detectives later identified Rodas-Martinez as the alleged attacker through witness statements, video evidence, and information from residents of the apartment complex.

“Through video surveillance, our detectives were able to find video, still images of him, and work in the streets to identify and locate him at home and take him into custody,” said Rodriguez.

He was arrested at home in the same apartment complex where the alleged attack took place.

He was transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center and faces felony charges, including attempted armed sexual battery, causing serious personal injury, and armed kidnapping, police said.

Now, police are asking the community to come forward if they were a victim of Rodas-Martinez.

“As an abundance of caution, we are asking the community to take a look at him. If you feel that you’ve been a victim of this man, please contact detectives as soon as possible,” said Rodriguez.

Jacksonville inmates sew teddy bears for officers to give children during traumatic calls https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/jacksonville-inmates-sew-teddy-bears-for-officers-to-give-children-during-traumatic-calls/ Sat, 13 Dec 2025 13:04:07 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1650523 JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (WSVN) — Inside Columbia Correctional Institution in Jacksonville, 11 inmates are involved in a unique project to craft teddy bears for children.

The program is a textile workshop at the institution that gives inmates new job skills, as well as a chance to give back to the community.

For Jonathan Tucker, an inmate at the facility, it was a way to do something meaningful beyond the prison walls.

“Definitely a good opportunity, because I get to make a change in other people’s lives,” he said.

Tucker explained how the creation of new bears works.

“Once you get the pattern traced out, I cut it out, and then that’s when the creation starts,” he said.

Another inmate sews the outer coat, and a third stuffs it.

“This is the backside of the bear, and this is the front side,” said Tucker.

Normally, the inmates sew uniforms, bedding and linens, but staff wanted to broaden their skill set before release, creating the teddy bear sewing program.

The plan was spearheaded by Assistant Warden of Programs Krissy Stanford.

“But also, through making a teddy bear, is kind of broken down some walls and has opened up the communication, where they’re talking more about their families, and their kids and experiences that they’ve had, and it’s just – it’s been a wonderful program all the way around,” she said.

The goal of the program is to put teddy bears inside the Lake City Police Department’s patrol carts so officers can give them to children during traumatic calls.

“That’s what motivates me, because I’m putting smiles on other people’s faces, and I’m giving that opportunity,” said Tucker.

1 hospitalized after fight between juveniles leads to shooting in Plantation https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/1-hospitalized-after-fight-between-juveniles-leads-to-shooting-in-plantation/ Mon, 08 Dec 2025 20:39:57 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1649063 A fight between a group of young people escalated into a shooting, sending one of them to the hospital and prompting a precautionary lockdown at a nearby middle school, Plantation Police said.

Officers responded on Monday afternoon to reports of the shooting in the area of Northwest 70th Avenue and 16th Street, according to a series of posts on the department’s X account.

According to detectives, there was a fight between two juveniles, resulting in one of them being shot.

But the video, shared with 7News, shows a group of teens beating each other up in a street fight in the middle of a residential neighborhood. At one point, some of the fighters even body-slam one another against the ground.

“All the kids, you could tell, were coming to a specific location, which was this corner right here,” said witness Robert Cogdill.

“Everybody was fighting over there, everybody like – phew, it was crazy, man,” said a young witness.

In the middle of a fight, a gunshot was heard.

“All I heard was a gunshot. I got low,” said the young witness.

Home surveillance footage captured audio of the gunshot, as well as the group of teens scattering in different directions, including the injured victim.

“Everybody was running and screaming, and everybody kept saying, ‘Gil got shot, Gil got shot,'” said another young witness. “I just know he was lying down right there, and people were crying and stuff.”

One witness said she saw the group of teens running around the neighborhood after the gunshot. Then she saw the victim in front of her home with blood coming down the right side of his back.

“I heard a gunshot, and when we went to look, we saw kids running around, and they said that someone got popped, and when we did come outside, we ended up seeing two boys walking and, I guess, it was the person who got shot,” said the witness. “And we were telling him that he needs to sit down before the bullet does move anywhere, and then that’s when the ambulance came, and he was laying there.”

Cellphone showed the injured person being loaded onto a stretcher before paramedics took him to a local hospital. Police said he’s expected to be OK.

As officers investigated the shooting, they placed a multi-colored backpack in a large brown paper bag as evidence.

Detectives said the fight did not occur on school grounds and took place after school hours.

Police said Plantation Middle School was placed on lockdown as a precaution, adding there was no threat to the school. The lockdown was later lifted.

Witnesses said the hospitalized victim was awake when first responders arrived at the scene.

Area residents said the fights in their neighborhood need to stop.

“Sending a lot of prayers to the family,” said neighbor Maria Cuenca.

Cuenca, who lives close to where the brawl turned into a shooting, said she wants to see more security and officers patrolling the neighborhood to feel safer.

“I think we should do better as a community, because it’s very hard, it’s very painful to see, to live in this neighborhood and know that, unfortunately, at dismissal time, you have to kind of wonder, like, is there going to be another fight?” she said.

“It just needs to stop, like why?” said Cogdill.

As of Tuesday afternoon, police have not released any information about who may have pulled the trigger and whether or not they are looking for a shooter, as they continue to investigate.

If you have any information on this shooting, call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.

Accused stalker rams head through door window during chaotic Miami-Dade bond hearing https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/accused-stalker-rams-head-through-door-window-during-chaotic-miami-dade-bond-hearing/ Mon, 08 Dec 2025 11:37:22 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1648869 There was disorder in a Miami-Dade County courtroom when a man took drastic measures after trying to address a judge.

The bond court bash went down Sunday afternoon, when defendant Franky Padilla rammed his head through a door window during his appearance connected to an aggravated stalking charge.

Padilla’s public defender called the incident a medical emergency after her client’s exploits left a head-sized hole in the glass.

But before the hearing spiraled into chaos, it started as a quiet Sunday docket, at least before Padilla attempted to address Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Bertila Soto directly.

“Can I explain?” said Padilla.

“No. You can explain that to your lawyer,” said Soto.

But Padilla, 42, kept trying to talk to Soto, until it seems his microphone was cut off. He crouched down on the ground, and as officers were walking him out, he lunged forward and head-butted the glass pane, shattering it instantly.

“Your Honor, we have another medical emergency. Please hold,” said Padilla’s public defender.

Corrections officers tended to the injured defendant, pressing a towel against the woozy arrestee’s bleeding head after he bashed it through the window.

Padilla received a $7,500 bond in relation to his stalking charge.

“He does not exist for you, no contact,” Soto told the defendant.

According to court records, Padilla remains behind bars as of Monday morning. It remains unclear whether or not he will face new charges regarding his outburst in court.

25-year-old man faces 25 child porn charges after deputy-involved shooting in SW Miami-Dade that killed brother https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/25-year-old-man-faces-25-child-porn-charges-after-deputy-involved-shooting-in-sw-miami-dade-that-killed-brother/ Wed, 03 Dec 2025 15:55:13 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1647682 A 25-year-old man who was taken into custody following a deputy-involved shooting in Southwest Miami-Dade that left his younger brother dead is facing a slew of child pornography charges, authorities said, leaving the siblings’ family torn between tragedy and troubling allegations.

Cristian Barata was charged with 15 counts of possession of child porn and 10 counts of attempting to promote or distribute child porn.

His charges come a day after Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies surrounded their home, located in the area of Southwest 155th Street and 102nd Place in the Palmetto Estates neighborhood.

Surveillance video shows the moment MDSO’s Special Response Team served a search warrant, at around 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Deputies could be seen banging on the front fence with a sledgehammer and calling out commands over a loudspeaker.

“Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office serving a warrant … put your hands up,” said a deputy over the loudspeaker.

A woman, a child and a man were escorted outside moments later.

Cristian and Christopher’s stepfather, Israel Lopez, said he awoke to the loud noises.

“I heard ‘bam bam’ on the fence, when I realized the SWAT team was around the house,” he said.

Within minutes, Cristian’s brother, identified by family members as 21-year-old Christopher Barata, was dead, and Cristian was placed in handcuffs and taken into custody.

“My wife is devastated. She has no [children] right now. One is in jail, one is dead,” said Lopez.

According to Miami-Dade County Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz, deputies made contact with Christopher once inside the house, and he refused commands to drop a gun.

“A subject, armed, came to the door and confronted our deputies. Our deputies fired their service weapon,” said Cordero-Stutz.

Deputies said they performed lifesaving measures, but Christopher died at the home.

The siblings’ mother, overcome with grief, spoke with 7News in Spanish outside the home.

“They killed my son, they killed him,” she said.

Inside the home, at least three bullet holes marked where the gunfire erupted.

Investigators said the search warrant was not related to Christopher but part of a years-long investigation by the Internet Crimes Against Children Unit that was focused on Cristian. The suspect is now facing over two dozen sex offenses involving children.

“[This] included trading in this type of pornography and sexual abuse, as well as watching,” said Cordero-Stutz.

The brothers’ family members said they don’t believe the allegations and called for transparency, including the release of body camera video from the shooting.

“We want the proof, you know, we say no, we don’t believe it,” said Lopez.

However, the arrest report states Cristian confessed to the crimes.

The suspect and his brother worked as Transportation Security Administration agents.

The TSA released a statement, announcing Cristian was removed from his position:

“The Transportation Security Administration has no tolerance for criminal behavior or misconduct on- or off-duty. The TSA employee involved has had his access to all secure areas of the airport immediately revoked and has been removed from all duties, pending the outcome of the case. TSA is fully cooperating with law enforcement in their investigation.”

In court Wednesday, a judge found probable cause and set Cristian’s bond at $87,500. It remains unclear whether Christopher had any involvement in these allegations.

Because this was a deputy-involved shooting, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken over part of the investigation.

Man fatally shot by deputy serving search warrant in child porn probe in SW Miami-Dade; brother in custody https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/man-fatally-shot-by-deputy-serving-search-warrant-in-child-porn-probe-in-sw-miami-dade-brother-in-custody/ Tue, 02 Dec 2025 14:28:23 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1647255 A Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputy was forced to open fire inside of a Southwest Miami-Dade home, fatally striking a man while deputies were conducting a search warrant that led them to take another man into custody, authorities said.

7News cameras captured a heavy presence from MDSO deputies and the department’s Special Response Team in the area of Southwest 155th Street and 102nd Place in the Palmetto Estates neighborhood, just after 9 a.m. on Tuesday.

According to Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz, SRT units were serving a search warrant at a home that stems from a years-long investigation led by the Internet Crimes Against Children Unit, which is focused on individuals suspected of viewing and distributing child pornography.

“In this particular case, an over one-year investigation where the victims of child pornography and sexual abuse ranged from the ages of infancy to 6 years of age,” said Cordero-Stutz.

When they got to the home, deputies said, officials announced their arrival multiple times but nobody from inside the home responded. This led deputies to breach the home’s front door.

Surveillance video shows dozens of SRT units surrounding a white fence before one of them bangs on the fence with a sledgehammer. At the same time, a man begins speaking over a loudspeaker.

“Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office serving a warrant … put your hands up,” said the voice.

When they did that, deputies made contact with two adults and a child who were safely removed from the home.

Video shows a man, woman and child being evacuated from the home by responding units. The man, identified as the stepfather of the men involved, is seen being detained beside a car.

But moments later, the sheriff said, the situation turned deadly.

“At which point, a subject, armed, came to the door and confronted our deputies,” said Cordero-Stutz.

After the man refused to comply with deputies who asked him to drop the weapon, at least one deputy opened fire, striking the individual, investigators said.

“Our deputies fired their service weapon,” the sheriff said.

First responders rendered aid to the man.

“That individual succumbed [to his injuries] on the scene and passed away,” said Cordero-Stutz.

It remains unclear whether or not the subject fired his weapon at the deputies or how many deputies discharged their firearms.

Investigators said deputies located the target of the search warrant — the person accused of child porn offenses — and took them into custody.

“The search warrant for the ICAC was for one individual who is the one that is currently in custody,” said Cordero-Stutz. “[This] included trading in this type of pornography and sexual abuse as well as watching.”

7News cameras got an inside look at the home following the raid. In one of the walls, at least three bullet holes could be seen while piles of blood are spread out across the floor.

The mother of both men involved identified the deceased one as 21-year-old Christopher Barata and the one in custody as 25-year-old Cristian Barata.

She said she doesn’t understand what happened that led to her son being killed. She said both sons were Transportation Security Administration agents at Miami International Airport.

“They killed him in the living room. They killed my son. I can’t conceive it,” said the mother in Spanish.

She added that deputies should’ve done things differently

The stepfather of the men, Israel Lopez, told 7News what he heard early Tuesday morning.

“I heard bam, bam on the fence and when I realized, the SWAT team had surrounded the house,” said Lopez. “My wife is devastated. She has no life right now. One is in jail, one is dead.”

The family said they didn’t know Christopher had a gun and want to see video evidence of the incident.

While they conduct their investigation, Cordero-Stutz said their focus remains in safety and transparency.

“I ask the community that, if you have evidence, if you see something, this kind of a crime, the most heinous crime you can imagine — again, I mention these victims are between infants to 6 years of age — please let us know,” she said. “You can report it even through Crime Stoppers. That allows the opportunity to protect these innocent victims and not allow [these subjects] to have more victims.”

She added serving a warrant for these type of crimes are historically the most dangerous. No deputy was hurt.

Because this was a deputy-involved shooting, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken over part of the investigation.

Jury begins deliberations in Megan Thee Stallion’s defamation case https://wsvn.com/entertainment/jury-begins-deliberations-in-megan-thee-stallions-defamation-case/ Wed, 26 Nov 2025 15:09:07 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1645725 The jury in rapper Megan Thee Stallion’s defamation case against a blogger has begun deliberations after the defense and prosecution rested.

The lawsuit claims Milagro Cooper, a social media influencer also known as Milagro Gramz, posted false and harmful statements about her online.

Wednesday morning, 7News cameras captured Megan as she walked into the federal courthouse in downtown Miami.

She mostly remained quiet outside the building, but she did briefly respond when a photographer spoke to her.

“How are you holding up through all of this?” asked the photographer.

“I’m doing pretty good,” said Megan.

The Grammy winner, 30, is claiming defamation, invasion of privacy, emotional distress and the promotion of an deepfake porn video of the rapper generated with artificial intelligence.

In court, Megan testified that the AI-altered video cost her multiple brand deals, some worth more than a million dollars each.

The case is also one of the first to test Florida’s new deepfake law, which allows victims to sue over AI-generated explicit content shared without consent.

Another important question raised in court is whether Cooper qualifies as media under Florida state law. If so, Megan’s claim could be dismissed.

Megan Thee Stallion, whose legal name is Megan Pete, alleges Cooper participated in targeted social media campaign to harass, intimidate and defame her alongside fellow rapper Daystar Peterson, better known as Tory Lanez.

Lanez was found guilty of shooting Megan in a separate trial back in 2020. He is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence.

Ahead of the trial, Lanez and his lawyer were held in contempt for refusing to answer questions in a deposition.

The rapper is seeking unknown damages. Her reputation and possibly a new AI legal standard are now in the hands of a jury.

The jury is expected to reconvene on Monday to continue deliberations.

MIA helps prepare children with disabilities for travel ahead of the holidays https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/mia-helps-prepare-children-with-disabilities-for-travel-ahead-of-the-holidays/ Wed, 19 Nov 2025 22:28:54 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1643358 Ahead of a busy and potentially stressful holiday travel season for many, more than 150 local children with disabilities prepared for travel through Miami International Airport’s latest Instruction and Readiness tour.

The airport set up a tour of an airline through its program, MIA Air, to teach the children the ins and outs of travel, so they are ready for takeoff once the date arrives.

Participants said they rehearsed the entire air travel process.

“Checking in, going through the security checkpoints, and then making our way to the gate, which is gate J15,” said participant Emmanuel.

After arriving at their designated gate, the students boarded a LATAM airplane and took their seats.

7News cameras captured the excited children with all smiles as they waved to the camera.

Child traveler Lucas Pulido told 7News that while he was scared at first, he eased right into it.

“I was like scared because I’m scared of heights, [but now] I’m not scared anymore,” he said.

For parents, like Marcel Pulido, he said it’s an opportunity for the children to learn and grow.

“This inclusive experience gives us the feeling that we know now what they’re going to experience, what it’s going to be like for them to come on board and have that first experience before an actual flight,” he said.

Airport officials hope the program builds children’s confidence and reduces their anxiety of walking through an airport and boarding a plane.

“What I hope the kids take away from this is the joy of travel. The joy of going through an airport, getting on an airplane. The excitement that we all feel when we’re going to travel someplace new,” said MIA Director and CEO Ralph Cutie.

Since 2015, the program has hosted over 300 children to prepare them and their families for the real world of travel.

“It’s a whole culture of inclusion, of saying, ‘We welcome you. We want you to feel comfortable and relaxed when you travel at the airport,’ and as we heard, practice makes perfect,” said Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava.

While Wednesday’s tour was only a mock travel day with no actual takeoff, it was a huge step that may lead to a real journey.

When asked where he would like to travel to first, Lucas said, “New York.”

After their mock onboarding, the students and parents got off the plane with applause and cheers from the pilot and flight attendants.

Officials say that ahead of the holiday season, the program makes traveling less stressful and more accessible for everyone.

‘The job became very scary’: Former employee says she was a victim of yacht charter captain, recounts drug-fueled parties https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/the-job-became-very-scary-former-employee-says-she-was-a-victim-of-yacht-charter-captain-recounts-drug-fueled-parties/ Mon, 17 Nov 2025 23:31:57 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1642749 A former employee of a yacht owner accused of human trafficking and other crimes gave her account of the stunning things she saw on board, and she’s accused him of a sickening act.

Krissila Calderon said she managed 45-year-old Kutay Satiroglu’s boat charter, King’s Yacht, starting in 2021 after she moved to Miami from New York.

“I was around a lot of sketchy people in Miami. Sketchy in the sense, the type of people you don’t feel safe around,” she said.

Calderon said Satiroglu’s arrest at his home on Pine Tree Drive earlier this month gave her the courage to speak up about her time working for him.

“Once I heard that he had been arrested for such charges, it was a feeling of relief,” she said.

According to Miami Beach Police, the boat captain is accused of committing sex crimes with a 17-year-old girl. Detectives said the victim was forced to have sex with Satiroglu’s friends for money and was found at his home being held against her will. The victim later told investigators she was in a romantic relationship with Satiroglu and had been working for his yacht charter for two months.

Speaking with 7News virtually, Calderon said she witnessed drug-fueled parties on board during her time working for him.

“There were numerous amounts of drugs on the boats at these yacht parties. You would see people high to the point of passing out,” she said.

Calderon said she was so worried by the drugs and aggressive behavior toward girls that she would help with their ride home once the party was over.

“I had to send girls home in Ubers to make sure they weren’t taken advantage of,” said Calderon. “The job became very scary.”

Throughout her time on the boat, she said Satiroglu could be intimidating or threatening.

“If something went south with a booking for one of the yachts, he became violent and very degrading with his words,” she said.

In 2022, Calderon said things took a turn for the worse.

“He tried to make a sexual advance on me, and because I said no, he tried to get violent with me, and eventually I was able to fight my way safely out of the boat, and I tried to press charges on him moving forward,” she said.

Calderon said her case against him never moved forward, and since then, she’s moved back to New York.

“I felt discouraged, like that gave Kutay a sense of power, like he can get away with doing anything,” she said.

However, after his arrest, Calderon said she feels safe returning to Miami.

“I felt scared. I felt like I always had to watch out for him, just in case he would pop out of nowhere. It wasn’t a good feeling to have to visit with fear in my heart,” she said.

Now, Calderon hopes her story helps others who may have also been victims.

“The more women that come out and have the courage to speak up, everyone else can receive the justice they deserve as well,” she said.

Calderon is the second victim to speak out about Satiroglu’s alleged crimes to 7News. Earlier this month, Sierra Bush, who was 17 at the time, told 7News she was also a victim of Satiroglu.

“She said that she was assaulted and trafficked, and I actually was as well by the same man,” said Bush.

Calderon said she wants to pursue charges again.

7News reached out to Miami Beach Police about Calderon’s case and they said they are checking on that case.

Satiroglu remains behind bars.

At arraignment, Antonio Brown’s lawyer enters not guilty plea in Miami shooting, requests jury trial https://wsvn.com/sports/at-arraignment-antonio-brown-pleads-not-guilty-in-shooting-outside-little-haiti-underground-boxing-match/ Mon, 17 Nov 2025 15:55:52 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1642630 Former NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown went back before a MIami-Dade County judge to enter a not guilty plea in his case for attempted murder.

Brown, 37, and his attorney, Mark Eiglash, appeared before Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Marisa Tinkler Mendez via Zoom for their very first court arraignment, Monday morning.

In addition to entering a not guilty plea, Eiglarsh requested a jury trial in a case where his client could spend years behind bars if found guilty.

“The state has filed an information charging attempted second-degree murder, a felony in the first degree,” said a clerk during the arraignment. “The guidelines are around 48 months state prison to 30 years state prison with a 20-year minimum mandatory.”

This case stems from a tense May 16 confrontation outside of an underground boxing match in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood. Brown is accused of grabbing a security guard’s handgun and then firing two shots at a man with whom he had gotten into a fistfight earlier that night.

That man told Miami Police officers that he was grazed by a bullet.

Brown then flew to Dubai, where he lived for several months, before he was brought back to the U.S. He spent time behind bars in a New Jersey jail before he was extradited to Florida on Tuesday of last week.

This past Thursday, he was released from the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in West Miami-Dade after spending 42 days behind bars.

Brown remains under house arrest in his Broward County home and has been ordered to wear a GPS ankle monitor. If found guilty, he could spend up to 30 years behind bars with a 20-year minimum. His next court appearance has been set for Dec. 22.

‘I became the scapegoat’: Former BSO sergeant sues Sheriff Tony, BSO over termination following Tamarac murders https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/i-became-the-scapegoat-former-bso-sergeant-sues-sheriff-tony-bso-over-termination-following-tamarac-murders/ Wed, 12 Nov 2025 03:27:48 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1641324 A fired Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy is speaking out and taking legal action against what he calls his wrongful termination in connection with his response to a triple murder in Tamarac earlier this year.

Speaking with 7News on Tuesday, former Sgt. Travis Allen, along with his attorney Stephan Lopez, said he was suspended and fired without due process. He is placing the blame on the sheriff’s department and Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony.

“It’s just disgusting how they handled the case,” said Allen.

Allen said he was booted following the fallout of a triple murder in Tamarac that took place along the 5700 block of Plum Bay Parkway, back on Feb. 16.

According to BSO, Nathan Gingles killed his estranged wife, Mary, her father and a neighbor.

The killings occurred despite a restraining order and more than a dozen phone calls to BSO from Mary in which she complained about Nathan and said she feared for her life.

“He was stalking her to kill her and had a plan to kill her. She revealed that to the police department; they did nothing!” said Frank Ponzer, Mary’s uncle, during a phone interview.

Days after the murders, which occurred in front of Gingles’ young daughter, Tony announced the firing of several deputies, including Allen.

During a press conference where Tony acknowledged failures in the handling of the case, he called out Allen’s response time by showing diagrams of Mary running for help, trying to escape her raging ex-husband with deputies just blocks away.

“If you go straight to the call, you intercept this guy running down the street,” said Tony.

In addition, Tony said, after the killings, Nathan walked away with his 4-year-old daughter. The two of them crossed paths with Allen’s cruiser, but no contact was made.

Allen is then heard reporting what he saw via police radio.

“He’s walking with a child, maybe 4 years old, and she has no shoes on,” Allen is heard saying.

On Tuesday, 7News asked Allen if there was anything he could’ve done differently that night.

“I did the best I could,” said Allen.

He said that when he saw Nathan and his daughter that night, he didn’t know they were connected to the several 911 calls made.

“I became the scapegoat in this situation,” he said.

Lopez said his client has not been able to access the publicly available materials connected to the internal affairs case that led to his firing and that he’s being unfairly blamed for the crime.

“He terminated this man without due process,” said Lopez. “The only person responsible for this poor lady’s death, her father’s death and the neighbor’s death is the psychopath that is in custody.”

“My heart goes out to her and her family. It’s a tragedy that this happened to her,” said Allen.

Now, Allen is ready to sue BSO on the grounds that Florida’s Sunshine Laws and other laws were violated.

“There’s more to the story than what he was putting out,” said Allen.

BSO’s Media Relations Department said they do not comment on pending or anticipated litigation.

‘It’s a beautiful change’: Cold snap sends temps tumbling into upper 40s, low 50s across South Florida https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/its-a-beautiful-change-cold-snap-sends-temps-tumbling-into-upper-40s-low-50s-across-south-florida/ Tue, 11 Nov 2025 12:30:35 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1641058 A chill in the air spread across South Florida as a cold front descended on the Sunshine State, sending temperatures tumbling into the upper 40s and low 50s on Veterans Day.

The coldest air felt in the region this season did not stop people from going out on their walks along Fort Lauderdale Beach on a chilly but sunny Tuesday morning. Some people were even wearing shorts.

A man riding his bicycle told 7News he was startled by the the abrupt change in temperatures, which were as high as the 80s on Monday and hit 87 on Sunday.

“I’m absolutely freezing. It’s 47 degrees; this is crazy but enjoyable,” he said. “Yeah, I bike every morning, but this is definitely a new extreme, but I gotta keep up the routine.”

As late as 7 a.m. on Tuesday, parts of Broward County did not crack 50 degrees Fahrenheit. As of 8 a.m., Coral Springs and Weston reported 47 degrees, Davie and Hollywood reported 48, and Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, Pembroke Pines and Pompano Beach reported 49 degrees.

South of the county line, Coconut Grove, Doral, Miami Shores, North Miami and South Miami reported 49 degrees, but most of Miami-Dade remains in the low 50s, with 50 degrees reported in the City of Miami, Miami Beach, Miami Lakes, Opa-locka and Sunny Isles Beach. Temperatures were back up to the low 60s by noon.

Most of the Florida Keys stayed in the mid to high 50s through the morning and rose to the 60s in the afternoon.

Almost everyone who spoke to 7News on Fort Lauderdale Beach said they’re enjoying the change of weather.

“It’s nice, for a difference. Yeah, I’m enjoying it,” said a woman.

“It’s a beautiful change. You only get so many days [like this] a year, so we’re Floridian, wear the shorts,” said a man wearing a Chicago baseball cap, a light gray hoodie and light gray short shorts. “We’re warm up top, cold on the bottom.”

“Yeah, no, it’s great. It’s definitely a big change from the 95 degrees and 100% humidity, so I’m definitely going to enjoy it,” said a man.

“If we get five more days of this, I wouldn’t complain,” said a woman.

The cold blast kept many people off the beach … except one man seen jumping in the water in swim trunks.

For a couple visiting from Arizona, 40s in Florida was not part of their vacation plans.

“All my body’s been so tightened up that I’ve had leg cramps, toe cramps. I’m like stiff,” said one of the visitors as she showed 7News her pink Nike slippers. “I didn’t bring shoes.”

But for four women visting from Baltimore, Maryland, it’s the perfect weather to enjoy a workout by the sea.

“It always makes me rethink, like, my life, like, ‘Should I really be living in Baltimore, or do I need to just move to the beach?'” said one of the visitors.

Windy conditions are making the temperatures chillier than they are, as low as the lower 40s in Broward, with gusts reported between 25 and 35 miles per hour.

But the visitor from Maryland who spoke with 7News had some choice words for South Florida residents.

“You know nothing of cold, nothing. This is, at 7 o’clock in the morning, this is what we experience at noon,” she said. “Be grateful.”

She wasn’t kidding. The morning low in Baltimore was 30.

Most of South Florida won’t rise above the mid 60s into Tuesday evening. People are advised to dress in layers when going out all day Tuesday.

South Florida is expected to get back into the 80s by this weekend.

Memorial for fallen MDSO deputy grows as community honors his life; patrol car displayed at Kendall station https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/memorial-for-fallen-mdso-deputy-grows-as-community-honors-his-life-patrol-car-displayed-at-kendall-station/ Sun, 09 Nov 2025 23:29:22 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1639643 It’s been a somber few days as several Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies visited the memorial site of Deputy Devin Jaramillo to mourn his life, days after he was fatally shot in Southwest Miami-Dade.

7News cameras captured about a dozen of Jaramillo’s brothers and sisters in blue lining up in front of the growing memorial, leaving flowers and American flags in the very spot where, investigators said, the 27-year-old was shot and killed on Friday afternoon.

“Officers and first responders never forget. It tapers off, and you deal with life and you function, but you never forget it,” said J.C. Prellezo, a retired MDSO deputy.

“He was a son. He was a brother, but he’s also a homegrown hero. Nothing but the best of words were ever used when it came to describing who he was,” said MDSO Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz on Saturday.

Seeing the memorial hit especially hard for Lionel and Alma Espinoza, retired Miami-Dade officers who know Jaramillo’s family.

“It’s incredible,” Lionel said about the touching tribute. “It’s just terrible. To lose such a young gentleman, a young deputy, I mean, he had his whole life ahead of him.”

“It has killed me the way that this young man has lost his life the way he lost it,” said Alma. “Such a young man, a wonderful young man.”

Residents also passed by to pay their respects.

“He was an officer. He was keeping us all safe, and for this to happen in just really hard,” said area resident Cristina Falconi.

On Monday, MDSO parked his patrol car at the agency’s Kendall station, located at 7707 SW 117th Ave., so the public could visit and pay their respects.

“This is so sad and my prayers to the family,” said a woman.

“I work down the street and it’s awful. It’s very sad,” said a man. “It affects us man. It’s heartbreaking.”

According to officials, Jaramillo was shot and killed while responding to a traffic crash near Southwest 128th Street and 122nd Avenue.

“He encountered the subject who was part of the traffic crash case. There was a verbal dispute that ensued,” said Cordero-Stutz.

Cordero-Stutz was visibly shaken as she provided new details into the fatal shooting and identified the shooter as 21-year-old Steven Rustrian.

Deputies said Jaramillo and Rustrian began fighting after the deputy responded to the scene of the crash involving the suspect.

“And during that fight, he disarmed our deputy of his own service weapon and used it to shoot him multiple times,” said Cordero-Stutz. “The subject, after shooting our deputy, entered his own vehicle and took his own life.”

Despite the medical team’s best efforts at HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, Jaramillo succumbed to his injuries.

The sudden and senseless shooting has left many in the community trying to understand why it happened.

“He just attacked him,” said Alma. “It’s just why. That’s the big question, why?”

“You go out and you put your badge on. You’re hoping every day you come back,” said Lionel. “Unfortunately, he paid the ultimate price, he paid by his life. Too young.”

On Saturday morning, Jaramillo’s body, in a casket draped with the American flag, was wheeled into a Miami funeral home as he was flanked by fellow law enforcement officers.

As the memorial for that fallen deputy continues to grow, Cordero-Stutz called on the community to pray for the fallen deputy who loved them deeply and protected them fiercely.

“This will never be OK, and I ask our community to continue to hold us in your prayers, because we need them,” she said.

“This is very difficult for all of us. Not just for me, for the family, for the friends who know him, everyone,” said Lionel.

Tributes for the fallen deputy continue to pour in from local, state and federal officials, as well as other law enforcement agencies.

Officials have not released any funeral service details for Jaramillo.

Crews contain 2-alarm fire at NE Miami-Dade apartment building; no injuries reported https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/crews-contain-2-alarm-fire-at-ne-miami-dade-apartment-building-no-injuries-reported/ Tue, 04 Nov 2025 10:31:36 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1638166 Firefighters battled a fire that broke out overnight inside an apartment in Northeast Miami-Dade.

7News cameras captured residents standing in front of a seven-story building at the Canongate condominium complex at 800 NE 195th St., just after 5 a.m. on Tuesday.

The flames ignited inside of a fourth-story unit just after 3:30 a.m., forcing all of the residents out of their homes.

Multiple Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units rushed to the scene, as residents had only seconds to evacuate.

Resident Simone Griffin told 7News she smelled smoke once she heard the alarms.

“I just grabbed my robe, grabbed my phone, grabbed his pills, and we just went down,” she said, “but when we go out in the bigger hallway, that’s when we saw the smoke, ’cause we’re at 510, so it’s the floor above it, saw the smoke coming up, so that’s all we could see, and we just take the staircase.”

Griffin joined dozens of residents as they navigated the smoky conditions and made their way out of the building and onto the street.

“I’m like, ‘Am I going down into the fire or what?’ ‘Cause I say, when you’re going to the hallway or the staircase, the exit, you see more smoke,” she said. “And you hardly can breathe because it’s so flustered in there.”

MDFR crews arrived within minutes, worked to contain the blaze and made sure residents got out safely.

“On arrival, we encountered heavy fire and smoke coming out of the fourth story of this apartment,” said MDFR Operations Division Chief Michael Eng. “Crews had to quickly locate and extinguish the fire, but the challenge was the amount of smoke, which required an evacuation as well.”

Cellphone video captured flames near the unit’s balcony. 7News cameras later showed the balcony covered in soot.

MDFR officials said this was a two-alarm blaze that remains under investigation. It’s unknown how many units sustained damage.

There were no reports of injuries, but a neighbor told 7News that the dog belonging to the family who lives in the unit that caught fire did not survive.

By daybreak, residents were slowly being allowed back inside their units, as investigators combed through the charred apartment to determine what sparked the flames.

Nearly 1 week after Melissa struck Jamaica, AIDS Healthcare Foundation is sending pallets of hope from South Florida https://wsvn.com/news/us-world/nearly-1-week-after-melissa-struck-jamaica-aids-healthcare-foundation-is-sending-pallets-of-hope-from-south-florida/ Mon, 03 Nov 2025 17:33:37 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1637930 Nearly one week after Hurricane Melissa swept across the Caribbean, nonprofit organizations continue to fill pallets with supplies to be flown from South Florida to storm-stricken areas.

At a busy warehouse in Sunrise Monday, 41 pallets with critical health and medical supplies are all destined for the people of Jamaica — thanks to the AIDS Healthcare Foundation.

“So what today is about is doing what AHF does best, and that is responding to the needs of the people,” said AIDS Healthcare Foundation Imara Canady.

AHF is the world’s largest nonprofit public health organization, with a primary focus on addressing the global HIV and AIDS epidemic.

But in times of crisis, they also step up as first responders, and on Monday, their efforts are going to help communities in Jamaica hit hardest by Melissa — the most powerful storm on record to strike the island nation.

The Category 5 hurricane barreled into Jamaica with winds upwards of 185 miles per hour, leveling communities and leaving many on the island nation without the basics to survive.

Jamaican officials said at least 19 people were killed. That number is expected to rise in the coming days as search-and-rescue teams push into areas cut off by debris and floodwaters.

But despite the challenges, AHF is determined to ensure the relief reaches those who need it most.

“We have been working with our leadership teams that are based in Jamaica to identify what are some baseline things that are needed,” said Canady.

Items include generators, batteries, five-gallon gas cans, toilet paper, tarps and water purification kits — all part of the mission to help Jamaica on its long road to recovery.

“Starting tomorrow morning. [those items] will be deployed into the community, into those spaces, places that we know need these resources,” said Canady.

AHF has charted a plane that will be leaving Miami International Airport Monday afternoon and will arrive in Kingston, Jamaica in the evening. From there, the items will be distributed to the people of Jamaica.

Overnight downpours flood roads in parts of Broward, Palm Beach; good Samaritans rescue elderly man trapped in car https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/overnight-downpours-flood-roads-in-parts-of-broward-palm-beach-good-samaritans-rescue-elderly-man-trapped-in-car/ Mon, 27 Oct 2025 10:56:08 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1635553 Crews are cleaning up a big mess hours after heavy downpours brought a flood of trouble to parts of South Florida, catching many residents off guard as they turned roadways into rivers and stalled out vehicles.

The Sunday soaker flooded streets in parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties during the overnight hours. Forecasters said about five inches of rain fell in a short amount of time just before midnight.

Just after 6 a.m. on Monday, 7News cameras captured standing water in a residential neighborhood along Southeast Seventh Avenue, near Third Street, as well as stalled cars along the roadways.

There were multiple reports of stalled cars in Deerfield Beach, including several vehicles along U.S. 1 and and Northeast 54th Street.

Hours later, crews were seen cleaning out flood damage at David Evanofsky’s home along Southeast Seventh Avenue.

“I got two inches of water through the entire house,” said the homeowner.

Just down the street, residents assessed the damage and debris from the storm that left part of the neighborhood under water.

“Most rain I’ve ever seen here. It seemed like three hours of nonstop rain — heavy, heavy,” said area resident Willie Abreau.

Abreau, who has lived in this neighborhood since 1992, says water has never reached his house and he’s never seen rain leave such a mess on roadways.

“This pile here came from down the street. It wasn’t even really here. Most of it came floating over here, along with a bunch of other debris all shoved up under my truck,” he said.

A nearby rain gauge picked up more than six inches of rain that comes down in a short amount of time, resulting in knee-high water along Southeast Sixth Avenue.

In true South Florida fashion, some neighbors were seen getting out their kayaks in Deerfield Beach. late Sunday night.

“Unbelievable. I’ve lived here my whole life. Never in my life have I seen this,” said a woman.

The flooding led to several rescues as well, including one near Mizner Park in Boca Raton. Good Samaritans were seen rescuing an elderly man who was trapped in his car.

According to a Facebook post, the elderly man was stuck in his vehicle with water up to his chest, but thankfully the good Samaritans were there to get him to safety.

On Monday, 7News spoke to Thomas Ruzzano who helped the elderly man escape from the flooded car.

“His car was completely flooded. He was almost [chest] high up with water and he was struggling to get the seatbelt off and to open up the door to get out,” he said.

While the group of good Samaritans got the man to safety, Ruzzano said the man was far from the only driver in trouble.

“We saw about 10 to 15 cars all backed up, flooded,” he said.

Back in Deerfield Beach, the unexpected flooding left many residents upset and frustrated after, they said, the city recently completed a major drainage overhaul project intended to mitigate flooding.

“I saw no flow in the drains. I went out there and videotaped it, but there was no flow; the water was not receding,” said Evanofsky.

“We’re mad. They tore the whole neighborhood, and we had to go through that, and it still didn’t work,” said Laura Evanofsky.

One man, who spoke to 7News, said he couldn’t find his car on Monday morning after leaving it on Sunday due to the flooding.

Most of the floodwaters in that Deerfield Beach neighborhood have since receded, but localized flooding lingers in the region.

The City of Deerfield Beach responded to residents’ concerns in a lengthy statement that reads in part:

“The City’s Engineering and Environmental Services teams are conducting a thorough review of the design, construction, maintenance, and performance of the drainage system in this zone.”

Officials go on to say that they are reviewing whether there was any problem with the system’s construction, whether there was too much rainfall or extra debris. They also said they are currently monitoring the water levels.

Athletic staffer at Highlands Christian Academy in Deerfield Beach accused of inappropriately touching students https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/athletic-staffer-at-highlands-christian-academy-in-deerfield-beach-accused-of-inappropriately-touching-students/ Tue, 21 Oct 2025 16:21:15 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1634019 Authorities have arrested a now-former staff member at Highlands Christian Academy in Deerfield Beach following allegations of inappropriate touching involving students.

Ronison Exavier appeared before Broward Circuit Court Judge Corey Friedman on Tuesday morning.

“If and when you do bond out, sir, you’ll be on pretrial GPS Level 2,” said Friedman during the bond hearing. “I am ordering no victim contact; that applies to both the alleged victims in this matter, no contact with minors. I am granting an exception for family members, and I’m also ordering no presence. You can’t be on or about any Broward schools properties.”

According to the school’s website, the suspect is the Assistant Athletic Director.

According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, a student reported retrieving a lost item from Exavier’s office sometime in October when he “made comments toward her pertaining to her clothing and how she should modify it to show off her buttocks.”

The student then told officials he squeezed her buttocks, calling them “grab-able.”

The student said the incident made her have a panic attack in a restroom. She was overheard by another student who also had an interaction with Exavier this year and in 2024.

According to the second student, this past June, during a stretching session, “[Exavier] positioned himself behind her, got on his knees and pulled her body toward his.” Then, he “placed his groin/genital area against (the victim’s) buttocks for approximately 30 seconds.”

The school released a statement to parents that reads in part:

“The Head of School … was informed by a staff member of an allegation involving inappropriate touching by another staff member toward a student.”

The statement goes on to say that school administrators ‘notified the Florida Department of Children and Families and placed the employee in question on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.”

After meeting with the student who was allegedly targeted, as well as speaking with her family and the Broward Sheriff’s Office, “more allegations surfaced prompting further investigation,” the statement says.

The statement goes on to say:

“Highlands Christian Academy is fully cooperating with all investigative authorities and will continue to provide any necessary support to ensure a thorough and impartial process. The safety and well-being of our students remain a top priority.”

Tuesday afternoon, school officials issued a second statement that reads in part:

“Mr. Exavier has been terminated as an employee and is no longer permitted on the school campus or at any school-related activities.”

Prior to his arrests and based on social media posts, Exavier was congratulated by the school for being an alumni teacher and had called himself “blessed” for the opportunity to coach after a college career-ending injury.

He also posted several inspiration quotes on his social media page, calling coaching a “ministry,” going on to say “somewhere there’s a parent praying for a son or daughter to have a coach in their lives that will help them and love them like their own. Be that coach.”

Parents outside the school said they were concerned by his arrest.

“We’re praying for the victims. We have children so it could be anybody’s child. It’s unacceptable,” said parent Jessica Arellano.

“This is a Christian school. They should check everybody,” said parent Fernando Gomez.

“I’m happy that they reacted fast and quickly,” said parent Tara Albrecht.

Exavier is being held at the Paul Rein Detention Facility in Pompano Beach on a $75,000 bond.

The 24-year-old faces a slew of charges, including three counts of soliciting to engage in sexual conduct and two counts of lewd and lascivious behavior.

BSO deputies are worried there could be additional victims.

If anyone has information about this investigation, they are urged to contact deputies immediately.

Mother speaks out after she and her daughter were attacked by dogs in NW Miami-Dade https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/mother-speaks-out-after-she-and-her-daughter-were-attacked-by-dogs-in-nw-miami-dade/ Mon, 20 Oct 2025 15:16:11 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1633660 A mother is speaking out a day after she and her daughter were mauled by dogs in a Northwest Miami-Dade neighborhood.

Speaking with 7News on Sunday, Crystal said she and her 10-year-old daughter were attacked by a group of dogs that would not stop coming after them.

“I was so scared, I was scared, I was scared,” said Crystal. “They were biting and attacking me, they would not stop.”

The victim said she and her daughter had just gotten off the train and were walking to her mother’s house, located along Northwest 65th Street, when the canines charged at them.

“The dogs basically run up and attacked my daughter, she jumps on the car, and I rushed her to my mom’s house and come back and wait for the police to report the incident,” said Crystal. “And by the time I’m walking back up the street, they chased down the street and attacked me.”

The mother suffered multiple bites on her legs, while her daughter suffered bites on her ankle, leaving both of them traumatized.

“She was scared, she wouldn’t stop crying. She was like, ‘Mommy, they bit me, they bit me,'” she said.

When deputies arrived, the dogs turned on them as well, she said, forcing one of them to open fire.

“When the officer got there, an officer proceeded to approach the owner’s house, the dogs attacked him, and that’s when he drew his weapon and shot the dogs,” said Crystal. “They attacked the officer. What else he was supposed to do?”

Officials confirmed that one dog was shot and killed by responding officers.

Willie Lloyd, that dog’s owner, said it’s unclear if his was responsible for the attack.

“I had him from a puppy,” said Lloyd. “He was in the bunch, you know, with the four or five dogs.”

The victim said the owner insisted the other dogs were strays, but she disagrees.

“If there are stray dogs, why are they under the car in your yard? They didn’t dig no hole to get up out of no gate,” said Crystal. “They got through the gate between the little openings; I watched them.”

It’s unclear whether or not the dogs’ owner is facing any charges or received any citations.

Miami Beach restaurant owner speaks out after Tesla crashes with tree outside; city adds speed check detectors https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/miami-beach-restaurant-owner-speaks-out-after-tesla-crashes-with-tree-outside-city-adds-speed-check-detectors/ Tue, 14 Oct 2025 03:29:14 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1632150 The owner of a Miami Beach restaurant is speaking out, one day after a crash and dash left his business wrecked.

Speaking with 7News on Monday evening, Matteo Chialastri said he received the call of a crash outside his restaurant on Sunday morning involving a Tesla and a tree.

“I checked the camera right away, and I saw the Tesla going through the palm tree,” he said.

Chialastri is the owner of Norman’s American Bar & Grill located at 67th and Collins. He woke up to the Sunday morning surprise and shared the footage of the smashing stop with 7News.

Video shows the moment of impact.

“Knock down a few tables, the umbrella,” said Chialastri.

Images provided to 7News of the aftermath. The Tesla had heavy front damage and had its trunk popped up.

Video also show two men running away from the crash with what appears to be their luggage. A third person was also involved.

The men are then seen hastily jumping a fence and fleeing on foot, just a few feet from where they ditched their wrecked car.

“Did you see the video of the bad guys running away and jumping over the fence?” asked 7News’ reporter Sheldon Fox.

“Yeah,” said Chialastri.

Nearby residents also described the sights and sounds.

“Just a loud bang, turned around and obviously—think it was a 2023 white Tesla—the trunk was popped open. The two guys got out, walked around the car. They hit it so hard[…] I was surprised that they got out and walked around,” said a man.

The restaurant owner said he’s feeling fortunate nobody was sitting at his tables when the crash occurred.

Following the crash and dash, Miami Beach Police detained the two passengers but later let them go. As of Tuesday afternoon, police are still searching for the driver.

Detectives tell 7News the suspected driver of the rented Tesla is wanted for a hit-and-run.

Officials say the men were on the way to the airport when they crashed.

When asked how it feels to know that a day after the crash, no arrests have been made, Chialastri said: “These people, they can come to Miami Beach, they drive. They just left town, like nothing happened.”

On Monday night, officers added new speed check equipment to the area of Collins Avenue.

“They just added the speed check,” said Chialastri.

“Speed check, and that’s because of what happened?” asked Fox.

“Possibly,” said Chialastri.

The restaurant owner says that while the three men are long gone, his business remains damaged.

“We have property damage. We have table damage, city property damage, you know?” said Chialastri.

Detectives said the case remains open.

3 rescued brown pelicans released back into the wild in Miami Beach https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/3-rescued-brown-pelicans-released-back-into-the-wild-in-miami-beach/ Mon, 13 Oct 2025 19:16:03 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1631971 A crowd gathered around three covered crates on South Beach on Monday, in anticipation of a moment weeks in the making.

Inside the crates were three juvenile brown pelicans ready to return to the wild, which were rescued, rehabilitated and cared for by the Pelican Harbor Seabird Station.

Just before the release, staff shared the birds’ stories and reminded beachgoers why it mattered.

“As humans, it’s our duty, we feel, to take care of them, and to do our best in order for them to be happy and live their lives as they should,” said staff member Marianna Niero.

And with a simple countdown, the moment arrived, and the three pelicans were released from their crates and able to spread their wings once again.

The pelicans arrived in September, two with fishing hooks and tangled lines embedded in their wings, and the third was caught in a tree, before being rescued by Miami Beach firefighters.

Niero said the young pelicans bonded throughout the rehabilitation process, turning Monday’s triple release into a true reunion in the wild.

With all three birds fully healed, they soared side-by-side as they returned to the wild in a moment that left beachgoers in awe.

“They’re beautiful and I’m glad we can coexist, with all of this beauty for us to enjoy and for them to enjoy too and to stay safe, and stay healthy,” said a man who watched the release.

Officials at the Pelican Harbor Seabird Station said if you come across an injured animal, it’s best to take a photo or video and submit it to them so that they can make a proper assessment or safely bring the animal to their facility at 1279 Northeast 79th Street.

West Palm Beach Police officer released from hospital after being shot; suspect on the loose https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/west-palm-beach-police-officer-released-from-hospital-after-being-shot-suspect-on-the-loose/ Tue, 07 Oct 2025 11:56:16 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1629976 A West Palm Beach Police officer was released from the hospital, hours after he was struck by gunfire while responding to reports of a fight in a residential neighborhood.

Officers were dispatched to 300 block of Baker Drive, at around 2 a.m., Tuesday.

Responding units were met by gunfire, and an officer was struck in his bulletproof vest.

“Responding officers came under gunfire from an individual inside the home. The officers did return fire,” said West Palm Beach Police Chief Antonio Araujo.

Siblings Juanita and Zachary Lenair said they witnessed the officer going down near their home.

“He said, ‘Hey, I’m hit, I’m hit,” said Juanita. “Then he got up and immediately walked over there.”

The initial scene occurred a few houses down from the Lenairs, where a person who lives there said it’s made up of several apartments.

7News spoke to a nonverbal man who lives in one of the units. He was able to tell another resident that he wrestled a gun away from two men fighting. It appears he didn’t know there was another gun.

Witnesses described what unfolded.

“I’m shaking, I’m nervous, let me go! Call 911,” said a resident who didn’t want to show her face as she explained what occurred. “All of a sudden, the police officer said, ‘Put your hands up, put your hands up.’ Next thing, nothing. Gun. ‘Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop.'”

“Whoever was next door from them down there started shooting at the police, and that’s when the police started firing back,” said Juanita.

“I just saw sparks; that’s all I saw,” said Zachary.

The siblings said the officer was transported to a local hospital in a police car. He was listed in stable condition before being released.

At least two dozen evidence markers lined the streets as crime scene investigators worked to gather evidence.

Neighbors said they were woken up by the gunfire.

“Boom, boom, boom. We didn’t know what it was, so we were really scared about that,” said neighbor Julienne Levy.

“I wondered, ‘Who’s beating my door down like that?’ And when I came out and didn’t see anyone, but then I opened the door and saw the people out there,” said neighbor Efna Fuller.

7Drone Force hovered above the scene as a car in the driveway was checked out by police. K-9 units were also deployed to assist in the search for any missed clues.

Juanita said the gun violence needs to stop.

“It’s so sad. I hope he’s doing well. This gun violence around here shouldn’t be happening,” she said.

On Tuesday afternoon, WPB Police released a photo of 22-year-old Emmanuel Keevon Dashawn McRae who, they said, is the man who shot the officer. He remains on the loose.

It’s unclear if McRae was a resident at the apartment complex where the fight and shooting occurred. Detectives consider him armed and dangerous.

The incident remains under investigation.

Officials urge anyone with information to contact the West Palm Beach Police Department at 561-822-1900.

3 arrested in connection with street takeover in SW Miami-Dade https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/3-arrested-in-connection-with-street-takeover-in-sw-miami-dade/ Mon, 06 Oct 2025 17:22:33 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1629831 The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office has announced the arrest of three individuals in connection with a street takeover that left members of a Southwest Miami-Dade neighborhood shaken and concerned for their lives and properties.

Driver, 19-year-old Joshua Cuevas-Gomez, and passengers 18-year-old Alex Hernandez-Jimenez and 20-year-old Jamil Segueira-Esquivel are facing charges of drag racing that impedes traffic on a highway after being involved in this weekend’s street takeover.

According to an arrest report, Cuevas-Gomez was observed spinning a Ford Mustang at a high rate of speed without any regard for spectators who were standing within close proximity of the vehicle.

Cuevas-Gomez and his two passengers were taken into custody after MDSO deputies conducted a traffic stop.

But the trio was in one of the nearly 60 cars observed participating in the stunt.

Doorbell cameras captured the loud echoes of screeching tires, revving engines, and blaring sirens from various angles in the 1500 block of Southwest 102nd Avenue, at around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday.

“We didn’t know what was happening. Actually, we were scared to come outside,” said resident Ken Varela.

“At some point, it almost sounded like something was in the house,” said resident Hector Canciano. “It sounded loud, popping noises. Yeah, almost like there was, like, a carnival.”

While drivers pulled off the dangerous stunts, other partakers were seen running across residents’ lawn and wrecking havoc in the usually quiet neighborhood.

“We saw a whole bunch of cars lined up on the street, and there was some – I guess they were shooting out fireworks,” he said. “It was pretty crazy.”

MDSO deputies quickly responded to the scene and put an end to the reckless and lawless street takeovers.

The end of the revelry left residents relieved but on high alert.

“If they lose control, you know, they go into someone’s house, so it’s very scary,” said Varela.

All three individuals arrested are being held at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

It’s unclear if any more arrests will be made in connection with the street takeover.

MDSO deputies slam the brakes on overnight street takeover in SW Miami-Dade https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/mdso-deputies-slam-the-brakes-on-overnight-street-takeover-in-sw-miami-dade/ Mon, 06 Oct 2025 02:52:19 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1629654 Deputies put a stop to an overnight street takeover that rattled residents of a Southwest Miami-Dade neighborhood

The madness on the asphalt had tires screeching, fireworks flaring, engines revving and sirens blaring up and down the 1500 block of Southwest 102nd Acenue, at around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday.

It was a rude awakening for area residents Ken Varela and Hector Canciano.

“We didn’t know what was happening. Actually, we were scared to come outside,” said Varela.

“At some point, it almost sounded like something was in the house,” said Canciano. “It sounded loud, popping noises. Yeah, almost likeof there was, like, a carnival.”

Canciano said the pandemonium in the wee hours, captured on his Ring doorbell camera, caused him to shoot out of bed.

“My wife and I are in bed, and we start hearing loud noises, and we’re not really sure what that may be, and it almost sounded like it was right in front of our house,” he said.

Canciano said he opened his front door and did not see much. Meanwhile, dozens of people were wreaking havoc just around the corner, something he said is quite unusual in such a safe neighborhood.

“Every now and then you’ll hear a car with, like, a loud muffler that, you know, makes a lot of pop, but never enough to come outside of the house,” he said.

Varela’s Ring doorbell camera captured the chaos from another angle.

“We saw a whole bunch of cars lined up on the street, and there was some – I guess they were shooting out fireworks,” he said. “It was pretty crazy.”

MDSO deputies slammed the brakes on to the takeover a short while later.

“We heard the cop sirens, and then everyone just got in their cars and started racing down the street,” said Varela.

The end of the revelry left residents relieved but on high alert.

“If they lose control, you know, they go into someone’s house, so it’s very scary,” said Varela.

Takeovers like these have serious consequences, including arrests, vehicle impoundments and even felony charges, authorities said.

‘KPop Demon Hunters,’ ‘Superman’ top list of Halloween costumes flying off shelves at La Casa de los Trucos https://wsvn.com/entertainment/kpop-demon-hunters-superman-top-list-of-halloween-costumes-flying-off-shelves-at-la-casa-de-los-trucos/ Fri, 03 Oct 2025 11:08:02 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1629090 A Miami store that has been providing tricks and treats for over half a century’s worth of Halloweens is showing off this year’s hottest costume trends — from creepy to cute to everything in between.

Revelers looking for a ghoulishly good time this spooky season will likely be looking for a killer costume. In South Florida, that involves a visit to La Casa de los Trucos.

For 53 years, this hidden gem in the heart of Little Havana has been taking care of spooky season needs for all ages.

What started as a small magic shop has transformed into South Florida’s go-to costume kingdom, boasting more than 15,000 disguises, professional makeup and enough accessories to make any look memorable.

Store manager Joe Torres said it’s not just about costumes, it’s about tradition.

“We sometimes get emotional, because we see people coming in that were here when they were kids, coming in and bringing their kids and grandkids,” he said.

Every Halloween, pop culture drives the hottest costume trends, and 2025 is no exception.

At the top of the list, Torres said, are characters from a hit Netflix animated feature.

“Oh, my God. This year it’s ‘KPop Demon Hunters,’ which is blowing up,” he said.

Torres said superheroes are also flying off the shelves.

“We have people asking for the Fantastic Four, we have people asking for ‘KPop,’ we have people asking for the Marvel franchise costumes, we have people asking for Superman — that’s a big one,” he said.

Of course, Halloween wouldn’t be complete without a fright. Blood and scares never go out of style during spooky season.

“These are the 3-D tattoos that I was talking about. If you’re a beginner, don’t know how to apply makeup and all that, you can just put this with water, and it looks disgusting,” said Torres. “You have the gash and the mauling of the face. So you have the scar.”

So whether revelers are looking to suit up as the latest pop culture craze, a classic killer or a creature from beyond, the choices at La Casa de los Trucos are endless.

19 Miami Police officers set off on over 260-mile bike ride to Orlando to raise leukemia and lymphoma awareness https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/19-miami-police-officers-set-off-on-over-260-mile-bike-ride-to-orlando-to-raise-leukemia-and-lymphoma-awareness/ Wed, 01 Oct 2025 13:07:09 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1628332 They’ve got will, heart and a personal mission to ride hundreds of miles to show no one fights cancer alone.

City of Miami Police officers traded in their cruisers for bikes, and it was all for a good cause.

Before the sun even came up Wednesday morning, 19 Miami Police officers gathered at Bayfront Park. They were gearing up, not for duty, but for a purpose.

“I appreciate you all, may God bless you and have a safe trip,” said Miami Police Chief Manny Morales.

With words of encouragement from Morales, these officers were ready to set out on a 260-plus-mile journey to Orlando. The ride aims to raise awareness for leukemia and lymphoma, as well as to honor one of their own families.

This year, the ride is dedicated to Patty McCrink, the wife of Miami Police Detective Joseph McCrink, a 28-year veteran of the force.

“Unfortunately, with Patty getting sick, it was just, like, a no-brainer that, ‘Hey, we have to do something for cancer, and specifically blood cancer,'” said Joseph.

Patty was diagnosed with Stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma last year. She recently celebrated finishing her treatments.

“It means so much, I’m so proud of them, and I’ve known a lot of them since they became police officers,” said Patty.

This year’s ride is a family affair. Both of Patty and Joseph’s sons are joining the ride as well.

“Both my sons are police officers, and my husband, and we have other family members, so I’m just overwhelmed with being so proud that they would do something like this for me,” said Patty.

Together, the family said, it’s been a tough year, but staying positive and leaning on each other made all the difference.

“We’ve had our battles, and they’ve been good and bad, and we just work through it and say, ‘Hey, we’re not going to let this disease tear us apart,'” said Joseph.

For these officers, this journey is about more than just miles on the road. It’s a testament to hope, healing and the power of community, pedaling toward a future filled with strength and survival.

“People need to be more caring and really understand what it’s like to be a good person and just trying, you know, [to] be the person you can be,” said Joseph.

As of Wednesday morning, the police department has raised $31,000 for Blood Cancer United. They’re expected to ride seven to eight hours a day and to end their ride in Orlando sometime on Friday.

West Broward High marching band earns coveted spot in London’s New Year’s Day Parade https://wsvn.com/news/us-world/west-broward-high-marching-band-earns-coveted-spot-in-londons-new-years-day-parade/ Wed, 17 Sep 2025 00:03:35 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1617849 A band of young musicians from Broward is bursting with excitement after finding out they earned a spot performing during London’s New Year’s Day Parade.

The West Broward High School Performance Ensemble in Pembroke Pines is no stranger to hitting the perfect notes. But the students didn’t know they were about to hear the biggest note drop.

During a surprise assembly on Tuesday, the student ensemble learned they will get to perform in London’s iconic New Year’s Day Parade.

“I take enormous pleasure in extending an invitation to the West Broward Performance Ensemble, Florida, USA to travel to London to star in the 2026-2027 edition of this exclusive and prestigious world-famous event, congratulations,” said Duncan Sandys, a senior patron for the parade.

The parade is the United Kingdom’s version of the United States’ Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, but on a significantly larger scale, garnering millions of viewers from around the world.

Only 20 marching bands from the United States have been invited, with the West Broward Performance Ensemble becoming one of the distinguished few to receive the honor.

It was a welcome surprise for the young musicians.

“Band is life and it’s fun,” said a student.

“To be able to, like, represent our school and South Florida, like, marching bands and stuff in London,” said another student.

Joshua Bishop, the director for bands, said he’s thrilled the students will get to have the surreal experience ringing in the new year on another side of the world.

“They’re gonna play with kids in other bands that don’t speak English, that are from all over the world, and I think that those are just really important experiences, core memories that they’re gonna be able to take for the rest of their lives,” said Bishop.

With the band set to go from South Florida to center stage in London, everyone is ramping up their practice schedule to perfect their performance for what promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

“I know how life-changing it’s gonna be. It’s a memory that they’re gonna carry with them for the rest of their lives,” said Sandys.

If you would like to support the West Broward Performance Ensemble on their journey to the world stage, you can donate here.

Florida AG: Open carry of firearms is legal after court ruling https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/florida-ag-open-carry-of-firearms-is-legal-after-court-ruling/ Mon, 15 Sep 2025 20:17:24 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1617366 Florida’s attorney general has confirmed that open carry is legal in the state following a recent court ruling.

Attorney General James Uthmeier issued formal guidance to law enforcement officials to end prosecutions the previous state ban.

https://twitter.com/AGJamesUthmeier/status/1967601917686636843?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet

The memo came after an appeals court struck down the state’s ban on open carry, finding it violated the Second Amendment.

Criminal Defense Attorney Eric Schwartzreich said the memo means the law-abiding Floridians will now be able to legally carry firearms out in the open.

“The AG has said that they’re not going to appeal, so right now, effectively, the law in the state of Florida is open carry,” he said.

Schwartzreich said the new normal will come with some restrictions.

“Now, there will be prohibitions. No bars, schools, Convicted felons. There are federal prohibitions,” he said.

Floridians cannot open carry in bars, restaurants, schools, government buildings and secure areas in airports.

Experts say the adjustment will prove challenging for law enforcement agencies.

“Police officers have always been trained that the mere sight of a gun means danger,” said retired Miami Police Chief Jorge Colina. “I’m afraid of the confusion that it could cause. A police officer not knowing, are you someone that’s about to commit a violent act or are you just exercising your right?”

“How are law enforcement agencies and different jurisdictions when this is put upon them going to handle it? Well, that’s the million dollar question. I think it’s going to cause some confusion and there will be a gray area until this all gets sorted out,” said Schwartzreich.

Colina, who now provides guidance and training to agencies and organizations around the country, says that with open carry legal, there will need to be training.

“There needs to be a legal bulletin that’s put out to all the police departments explaining to the officers this change in the law. So they are not taking somebody into custody where that is still influx, number one. Number two, emphasizing that level of restraint. If you receive a call where someone is armed, there’s going to have to be a lot of training on how you approach that if this remains the law in Florida,” he said.

Following this change, state political party leaders are reacting.

The Republican Party of Florida called the move a win and said it reaffirmed laws against threatening behavior are still in place.

“The Republican Party of Florida and our leaders have fought tirelessly for this outcome. Protecting the Second Amendment has always been a top priority, and today’s announcement is a major victory for freedom, for our constitutional rights, and for every law-abiding citizen who believes in the right to defend themselves and their families,” said RPOF Chair Evan Powers.

Florida Democrats, however, want law enforcement to wait for a final legal judgement before allowing open carry of firearms.

In a statement, Democratic Party of Florida Chair Nikki Fried wrote:

“Nationwide, we are seeing harrowing levels of gun violence, marked by assassinations, school shootings, and people being killed in places of worship. This is a moment in history when we need to promote safer environments, not embolden those who could abuse the ruling’s intent to sow seeds of terror.”

It remains unknown how different law enforcement agencies will handle this memo. Miami Police officials tell 7News they are still waiting for further clarification.

Crews extinguish house fire in SW Miami-Dade; no injuries reported https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/crews-extinguish-house-fire-in-sw-miami-dade-no-injuries-reported/ Mon, 15 Sep 2025 11:51:53 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1617097 A family who lives in the Olympia Heights neighborhood in Southwest Miami-Dade are picking up the pieces after an overnight fire forced them out of their home.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue quickly responded to the home located along Southwest 40th Terrace around 1:15 a.m. Monday in reference to a kitchen fire.

Crews conducted a thorough search of the house and evacuated all residents.

7News cameras captured a woman being treated outside the home for smoke inhalation, but she did not require transportation. No injuries were reported.

Within a matter of minutes, the fire was brought under control, though fire officials later returned to the residence to contain flare-ups.

“Need help pulling some ceiling pulling some eaves and lets see if we can locate where this fire is coming from, definitely seems like its up in the attic,” radioed a firefighter.

Though the family refused to speak with 7News on camera, they appear to be in good spirits and are receiving support from their neighbors.

‘I fought an alligator and won’: Florida woman punches, fends off gator that dragged puppy into creek https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/i-fought-an-alligator-and-won-florida-woman-punches-fends-off-gator-that-dragged-puppy-into-creek/ Sun, 14 Sep 2025 03:47:34 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1616785 LAND O’ LAKES, Fla. (WSVN) — Alligators are part of life in Florida, and as the owner of a puppy found out, small dogs can be easy prey. So she took matters into her own hands and confronted the predator.

Four-month-old Dax probably has no idea his owner, Danie Wright, saved his life earlier this month.

But anyone would do it,” said Wright. “Well, we’ve never seen an alligator back here.”

Wright said she had taken Dax behind her house in Land O’ Lakes to walk along a stagnant creek when the gator lunged at her pup and bit his collar.

“I heard a squeal, and I got pulled. So he’s – the alligator had him by his AirTag and drags him,” she said.

As the large reptile dragged Dax into the water, Wright chose to fight back.

“And I just punched and punched and punched, and I punched him in the eye enough that he kind of let go, like he unclamped a little,” she said, “and I pulled out, but his teeth were like here and just dragged down my arm.”

What may look like algae or maybe even AstroTurf on the water’s surface is actually floating water moss, and it provided an effective cover for the 5-foot gator.

It did not take long for trappers and agents with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to get there and catch the gator.

“Be careful with your dogs, you know, these alligators are no joke. I mean, 15 feet he came out to get him, and I didn’t see him,” she said.

Wright recorded the gator’s capture safely from inside her porch.

“I can’t even believe this happened to my life today,” she is heard saying in the video. “I freaking fought an alligator and won.”

She has a reminder for dog owners to avoid taking their pets anywhere close to water.

“I learned to be more alert. Constantly walk around, I’m looking at my phone all the time. Leave your phone at home, you know. Pay attention,” she said.

Because you never know what might be lurking, but in Florida, if it’s wet, it’s a safe bet a gator is close by.

Alligator attacks on dogs aren’t tracked, but wildlife officials say they are a common target.

Miami Beach commissioners request administrative hearing over crosswalk removal as FDOT’s deadline looms https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/miami-beach-commissioners-request-administrative-hearing-over-crosswalk-removal-as-fdots-deadline-looms/ Wed, 03 Sep 2025 12:50:53 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1608831 Miami Beach commissioners met Wednesday to discuss the state’s crosswalk controversy as municipalities have one day remaining to decide whether they’ll get rid of the colorful, symbolic messages or risk losing state funding.

Following a unanimous vote by commissioners, Miami Beach’s city manager sent a letter requesting an administrative hearing to contest a mandate ordered by the Florida Department of Transportation to remove its Pride crosswalk at 12th Street and Ocean Drive.

“To force us to remove this crosswalk now, under threat and without dialogue, sends an incredibly chilling message to the LGBTQ community,” said Miami Beach Commissioner Alex Fernandez.

The FDOT, citing safety concerns, has ordered all municipalities to remove street art related to social, political or ideological beliefs or risk losing state funding.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has defended the move.

“They had to remove a ‘back the blue,’ they had to remove some of these other things, and so it spans to different things but we’ve made the policy decision in Florida we’re not gonna use the roads for that purpose, the roads are there for either pedestrians to cross or cars to go and that’s what it’s gonna be,” he said.

Commissioners argued there’s been no evidence to suggest the Pride crosswalk has led to an increase in traffic accidents.

“I have seen no evidence of harm. I don’t know of any confusion caused by this crosswalk yet now, with no cost shown, we’re being ordered to remove this crosswalk under threats of penalty against our city,” said Fernandez. “If safety is the measure, this crosswalk more than passes the test. You look at 10th Street, it had 37 accidents. 11th Street, 30 accidents. 13th Street, 23 accidents. 12th Street, only 15 accidents.”

Protesters are also pushing back against the state’s order to erase the rainbow-painted Pride crosswalk and other street art in the city.

Leading up to the highly anticipated commission meeting, hundreds of people marched along Washington Avenue over the weekend, carrying rainbow flags and signs.

“I believe in freedom of expression and I think all rights are human rights,” said protester, Jo Manning.

Protesters said state officials just want to cover up beliefs that do not align with their own.

“They are trying to erase the LGBTQ+ plus community,” said protester, Karen Matroni.

“It’s about the first amendment. It’s about the freedom of speech and, of course, it’s about equality,” said Julie, a protester.

In a June memo from FDOT, officials pointed to safety concerns over pavement markings but Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava disagrees.

“It’s not even a safety concern because actually these are proven to be safer for pedestrians,” said Cava.

Miami Beach joins cities like Fort Lauderdale, which has its own pride crosswalk, some residents want to see protected along Sebastian Street and A1A.

The original rainbow crosswalk was painted to honor the 49 people killed at a gay nightclub in Orlando back in 2016 while state officials have already painted over the crosswalk, protesters still gather to color in with chalk; even though its temporary, they say, its message lasts.

“This is not a lawsuit, this is not an injunction, this is not asking for declaratory relief,” said Fernandez. “If we don’t succeed at the administrative hearing, the next step that the state provides for this in the law is for there to be an appeal.”

Fernandez said even if the commission’s request for a hearing is approved and the Pride crosswalk is allowed to stay, he still hopes to rename the intersection on 12th and Ocean Drive to Pride Street to preserve the crosswalk’s message.

“If, eventually, let’s say this crosswalk is gone, the community stays. The values of inclusivity will forever be embedded in Miami Beach and so, yeah, we should consider renaming the street because that does not affect the safety, that does not involve FDOT traffic manuals, that’s something that is irrespective of our roadways,” said Fernandez.

Man hospitalized after being attacked by 3 dogs during walk in West Park https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/man-hospitalized-after-being-attacked-by-3-dogs-during-walk-in-west-park/ Tue, 26 Aug 2025 13:20:50 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1605824 A man was attacked by three dogs while walking in West Park, making this the third dog attack in recent weeks.

The vicious attack happened as the unidentified man strolled along Southwest 58th Avenue and 38th Street, Monday afternoon.

Surveillance video shows the man jumping on a utility box and then climbing a palm tree in a effort to escape but both of those methods were unsuccessful and the animals kept gnawing at the the man’s arms and legs as he fell to the ground.

The man was even heard yelling out in agony at point, while the pack of canines’ louds barks echoed throughout the neighborhood.

One resident watched the ordeal unfold on his ring camera and rushed home to the victim’s aid.

“His leg was bloody. I didn’t realized it was that bad, said Alberto Dominguez.

Paramedics arrived at the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He was bloody but conscious, according to neighbors.

The pet owners did eventually come to retrieved the animals, but neighbors describe them as “viscous” and say they often crawl out from a hole in their yard.

“A neighbor told me that they get out because there’s a hole underneath so its very irresponsible of someone knowing that their dog are vicious and they don’t take care of them by keeping them indoors,” said Dominguez.

It appears it isn’t the first time the trio of dogs have gone on the attack. Surveillance video from July 14 in the same West Park neighborhood shows the dogs attacking area resident Juan Echevarria.

“They are aggressive. They are supposed to be taken away when that happened to me,” said neighbor Juan Echevarria. Three dogs, pit bulls, came to attack me. I was pushing them back to keep them away from me.”

He said in an attempt to stay unharmed, he shooed the dogs away, but was unsuccessful.

“I fell on my back and I damaged my wrist,” said Echevarria.

He said he reported the attack to authorities, but was disheartened to learn about the most recent attack by the same dogs.

Broward County Animal Care were called to retrieve the canines.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the three dogs have been euthanized.

In a statement, Broward County Animal Care said “The owner’s boyfriend voluntarily relinquished all three dogs to animal care custody. The dogs have been humanely euthanized.”

Monday’s attack in West Park marks the third dog attack within a week in Broward County.

Two young children were recently attacked by dogs, one in Margate and another in Fort Lauderdale. Both victims were taken to the hospital with serious injuries but only in one of those instances were the dogs euthanized.

Now community members are calling on pet owners to take responsibility before someone else gets hurt.

“I just feel that it’s irresponsible people not controlling their dogs. I knew those dogs were vicious, take care of them,” said Dominguez.

The man suffered non-life threatening injuries. His current condition is unknown.

Officials say residents should contact their local animal care office for guidance, advice and potentially give them up for adoption if they feel as if they are losing control over their animal at home.

2-year-old girl hospitalized after being mauled by Rottweiler in Fort Lauderdale https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/2-year-old-girl-hospitalized-after-being-mauled-by-rottweiler-in-fort-lauderdale/ Sun, 24 Aug 2025 23:22:27 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1605232 A dog went on the attack in a Fort Lauderdale neighborhood, sending a 2-year-old girl to the hospital.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue units responded to the scene of the incident along the 1700 block of Southwest 24th Street, Saturday night.

Officials said that when first responders arrived, they saw people from a home carrying the child who had been mauled by a Rottweiler.

Paramedics transported the toddler to Broward Health Medical Center, where she remains.

According to Broward County Animal Care, the girl suffered a head injury.

The attack comes days after a 7-year-old boy was mauled by two pit bulls at a home on Lakewood Circle in Margate, Wednesday morning.

7Skyforce hovered above the scene and captured a bloody blanket was spotted on the ground.

The boy, who was bitten multiple times, was airlifted to BHMC, where he underwent several surgeries.

Fort Lauderdale Police said the two pit bulls did not live where the attack happened but had been visiting for about a day.

The canines were turned over to animal services and were later euthanized.

Nathaniel Silver, a certified dog trainer, told 7News that dogs in new environments can sometimes lose control.

“Maybe these dogs were under socialized and they maybe were under stimulated at the same time, meaning they didn’t have a lot going on in their life,” he said. “If they were that dog that was stuck in a house all day long, for 12 or eight hours a day, and they only got one walk a day, my guess is that the dogs were confused and that it was a fear response.”

Despite the attacks involving larger breeds, Silver pointed out, that it’s not the breed that determines aggression, it’s how the dog is raised and cared for.

“I wouldn’t say that any dog is born a bad animal, what I would say is that every dog has basic needs, and it is on the owner of the dog to educate themselves on what can they do to meet the basic needs of this animal,” said Silver.

Broward County Animal Care officials said the Rottweiler will be confiscated pending the outcome of their investigation.

Search underway for subject in attempted sexual battery of 12-year-old girl in gated NE Miami-Dade community https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/search-underway-for-subject-in-attempted-sexual-battery-of-12-year-old-girl-in-gated-ne-miami-dade-community/ Wed, 20 Aug 2025 02:27:10 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1603553 Authorities are asking for the public’s help to identify a subject who allegedly attempted to sexually assault a 12-year-old girl in her bedroom in a gated community in Northeast Miami-Dade.

Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of an attempted sexual battery at the Carmel Lakes apartment complex located in the area of Northeast 208th Street and Northeast Fifth Place, at around 6:40 a.m. on Friday.

According to investigators, the young victim was sleeping in her bedroom when she was woken up by a strange movement in her bed.

The girl told police an unknown male walked toward her bed.

“When she realized that he was in the room, she asked him who he was, and he out his fingers through her mouth, kind of telling her to be quiet,” said MDSO Sgt. Jesse Valdivia.

“The subject basically told her to be quiet, attempted to pull her pants down, and that’s when the victim kicked him and screamed,” said MDSO Detective Andres Hutarte.

Detectives said the victim struck the subject in his groin area before he exited through the bedroom window and fled in an unknown direction.

“We do commend the victim, at the age of 12, to be so brave and stand up for herself to fight off her attacker,” said Valdivia.

Authorities say the subject may be between 15 and 19 years old, about 6 feet tall with a thin build. He was wearing a black long-sleeve shirt with gray or light-colored pants, as well as a white ski mask that covered his face.

“Right now, it does seem like it was apparently a targeted attack on the victim,” said Valdivia.

Detectives said they’re reviewing surveillance video footage from cameras in the gated community. As they continue to investigate, Valdivia has a message for the community.

“Please be vigilant out there, children out there and parents, just of your surroundings, people you might even realize that are in the area that don’t frequent there, or just activity that catches your attention,” he said.

Officials unyone with information regarding this incident to contact Hutarte or Valdivia at 305-715-3300. You can also contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS(8477).

Amber Alert issued for 2 missing children out of Palm Beach County https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/amber-alert-issued-for-2-missing-children-out-of-palm-beach-county/ Mon, 18 Aug 2025 21:49:39 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1603022 RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) – The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has issued an Amber Alert for two missing children from Riviera Beach.

Authorities said Aizon Turner, 3, and his brother, Akachi Turner, 11, were last seen Sunday in the company of Audrey Turner, 43.

The children may be traveling with her in a black Toyota sedan with front-end damage.

Aizon is 3 feet tall and weighs 32 pounds. He was last seen wearing a khaki shirt, khaki shorts, and black light-up shoes with red trim.

Akachi is 5 feet tall and weighs 72 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black shirt, black pants, and high-top FILA sneakers.

Audrey Turner was last seen wearing a black tank top and a cream skirt with black stripes. Police said she may have her hair in a ponytail and a nose ring.

Authorities said Audrey is believed to be headed north toward Atlanta.

“Audrey Turney, 43, may be headed to Georgia with them,” said Mike Jachles, a spokesperson for Riviera Police.

Audrey has an active warrant in Miami-Dade County for child neglect and is likely facing pending felony charge for allegedly taking the boys after losing custody of them.

“The children could be in danger because they’ve been abducted, they’re with a non-custodial parent, who has a warrant out for child neglect, so certainly it’s not a safe environment,” said Jachles.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Riviera Beach Police Department at 561-845-4123, dial 911 or contact the FDLE Missing Endangered Persons Information Clearinghouse at 1-888-356-4774.

Coast Guard rescues diver suffering from medical emergency near Haulover Inlet, officials say https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/coast-guard-rescues-diver-suffering-from-medical-emergency-near-haulover-inlet-officials-say/ Mon, 18 Aug 2025 12:16:14 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1602847 A diver was rushed to the hospital after being pulled from the water in Northeast Miami-Dade.

The Coast Guard pulled the 40-year-old man into their rescue boat near the 10000 block of Collins Avenue Sunday night.

“Be advised we just received a call from the Coast Guard receiving a diver down on a dive boat just outside of Haulover Inlet,” said a dispatcher.

It appears the diver suffered some form of a medical emergency and lost consciousness while surfacing the water.

Crews brought the man to shore, where they performed life-saving measures, before transporting him by ground to Aventura Hospital.

“It’s one diver. They are performing CPR,” said a dispatcher.

At last check, there’s been no update on the man’s condition.

It’s unclear what the ocean conditions were like when the incident occurred but the National Hurricane Center said with Hurricane Erin still off shore, the eastern coast could experience life-threatening surf and strong rip currents.

The Coast Guard is leading the investigation and have not released the man’s identity.

Miami Police officer suspended after arrest stemming from 2020 littering incident in Broward https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/miami-police-officer-suspended-after-arrest-stemming-from-2020-littering-incident-in-broward/ Wed, 13 Aug 2025 03:00:12 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1601454 The City of Miami Police Department has suspended one of its officers in connection with a littering incident in 2020 that led to the officer’s arrest in Broward County.

7News cameras captured Miami Police Officer Guillermo Arteaga as he walked out of the Broward County Jail in Fort Lauderdale, Tuesday night.

7News reporter Sheldon Fox asked the 35-year-old officer to comment on the incident and the charges he is facing.

“I’m just trying to get your take on what happened with you littering. What happened, man?” said Fox.

Arteaga did not say anything and kept on walking.

“Why did you get arrested? I’m just trying to get your take; we want to get your side of the story,” said Fox.

Arteaga remained silent as he walked down some stairs toward a parking lot.

Back in April of 2020, Arteaga was cited by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission for dumping trash back on the side of Pembroke Road, near U.S. 27.

Court records show Arteaga never showed up for a court date on June 29, 2023, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Arteaga was arrested and booked into the Broward County Jail on a violation of Florida’s litter law over five pounds.

A 7News source said Arteaga was taken into custody while he was at work and has been relieved of duty.

“Should cops be able to break the law like that and litter? Would you arrest somebody if they were littering?” Fox asked Arteaga outside the Broward County Jail. “Just tell us what happened so that we can get your perspective. Nothing for 7News?”

Arteaga declined to comment, as he looked at his smartphone in the parking lot.

“All right, it’s just our job. We’re just trying to get your side of the story,” said Fox.

7News photojournalist Andrew Reid also attempted to get a quote from Arteaga, but while the police officer did not discuss his charges, he did reply to the camera operator.

“Sir, can you please stop following me? You’re kind of in my personal space,” said Arteaga.

When asked whether he had a comment, Arteaga replied, “No, I don’t have anything. Can you please stop following me?”

It hasn’t been a banner year for Miami Police. Back in June, Chief Manny Morales addressed the suspension of four officers as part of an ongoing internal affairs investigation.

A 7News source said this investigation involves drugs and may be tied to an officer’s ex-girlfriend stealing his undercover vehicle.

In March, surveillance video showed a group of bicyclists beating a man and stomping on his car near the Adrienne Arsht Center. The beatdown happened in front of a Miami Police cruiser, as an officer sat in the vehicle, facing the crime and not responding.

Other officers eventually responded to the scene, but all the cyclists got away. The matter remains under internal affairs review, with at least one officer suspended.

A Miami Police spokesperson issued a statement on Arteaga’s case on Wednesday. It reads in part:

“We hold our officers to the highest standard and will take all necessary action to address any misconduct or allegations of misconduct by our members.”

According to Miami-Dade County’s website, anyone caught littering up to 500 pounds could face fines up to $2,500, and if found guilty, they could be sentenced to serve up to 300 hours cleaning up illegal dumping sites.

As of Wednesday evening, there is no word on what repercussions Arteaga will face.

Day 3 of hearing over environmental threats at ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ concludes; decision expected Wednesday https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/day-3-of-hearing-over-environmental-threats-at-alligator-alcatraz-concludes-decision-expected-wednesday/ Tue, 12 Aug 2025 16:30:31 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1601259 A hearing in a Miami courtroom on whether to halt operations and construction at a migrant detention center dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz” concluded on Tuesday afternoon without a decision, but one is expected on Wednesday.

Environmental groups and members of the Miccosukee Tribe allege that construction at the site is harming the surrounding environment and its wildlife.

On day three of the hearing, plaintiffs’ witnesses continued testifying as the defendants called their sole witness to the stand.

That sole witness told the court that if the judge sides with the plaintiffs, it could cause serious issues of public safety.

By the end of the hearing, things intensified as the judge questioned whether the state’s invitation for her to visit the detention center was genuine and the plaintiffs’ attorney looked visibly frustrated when they told the judge they’ve been trying to visit the center since the start of litigation.

Following the hearing, Curtis Osceola, the chief of staff for Florida’s Miccosukee Tribe, said the fight will continue on day four.

“We’re here to fight until the end,” he said.

Eve Samples, Executive Director of Friends of the Everglades, said they want the state to conduct an environmental impact study and be more transparent.

“Today really confirms the need for the public to see what’s going on out there, to see the environmental harm that’s unfolding. To have the state and federal government do their job and conduct an environmental impact analysis and that has not happened,” she said.

Critics claim it undermines billions of dollars in Everglades restoration projects, wetlands and wildlife.

“I have concerns about how it interrupts migration patterns, how the light impacts nocturnal creatures and endangered species like the Florida panther and even just the traffic,” said Florida State Rep. Anna Eskamani.

Plaintiffs said officials have failed to conduct the required environmental impact studies prior to breaking ground in June which, according to them, violates the National Environmental Policy Act.

“The property itself is about 96% wetlands,” said Samples. “Our case, as a reminder, is all about pausing so that the government can comply with the National Environmental Policy Act, a common sense law that requires the government to look before it leaps, conduct an environmental impact study,” said Samples.

Last week, a federal judge sided with those concerns, halting any new construction at the site for 14 days, but the temporary order still allows the state of Florida and the Trump administration to continue operating the facility and house detainees.

“We had been seeing dozens of dump trucks with fill moving onto the site in recent days. We anticipate that activity will stop under the judge’s order, so no new construction vehicles moving onto the site,” said Samples.

The site has drawn plenty of passionate protests since it opened. Over the weekend, faith leaders from across the state gathered outside to hold a prayer vigil for detainees inside for a second week in a row.

If the judge rules in favor of the plaintiffs, it would halt all construction and operations at the detention center.

A decision is expected on Wednesday.
