(WSVN) — A boat driver in Boynton Beach was taken into custody after fleeing the scene of a crash. In footage taken by onlookers, the boat the man was driving can be seen spinning out of control moments before it crashed into a nearby bridge and dock, flinging himself, a woman and a dog from the vessel.

Michael Dority Gee is facing multiple charges, including a felony charge for leaving the scene of a crime that had caused injury.

“Yo, yo, yo, are you okay? Are you okay?” a man can be heard yelling to the boat as it spun out of control, as seen in Ring camera footage.

People eating at a restaurant by the Boynton Beach Inlet on Sunday evening were shocked as they saw the boat spin by, some taking video of the scene. One person can be heard saying that they believed the driver was unconscious.

Moments later, according to officials, the customers watched it slam right into Woolbright Bridge, then into a private dock.

Investigators with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission said two people on board the boat were thrown into the water. Crews airlifted the driver and passenger to Delray Medical Center. The female passenger sustained head and back injuries.

The crash was so loud it set off someone’s doorbell camera. A neighbor shared what she knows about that night.

“My parents said that they had just heard something like an explosion. It was very loud. It was alarming,” the woman said.

Boynton Beach Fire Rescue said Gee somehow managed to climb back onto the moving boat and drive away.

According to the FWC, two other boaters tried to catch him and eventually did when his boat started to sink near the George Bush Boulevard Bridge.

As investigators took him into custody, a dive team pulled the woman and dog from the water.

Gee remains in a West Palm Beach jail as of Thursday afternoon on the charges of leaving the scene of a crash that caused injury and property damage.

10 Marion County Fire Rescue members fired over accusations of hazing rookie firefighter; some face criminal charges https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/10-marion-county-fire-rescue-members-fired-over-accusations-of-hazing-rookie-firefighter-some-face-criminal-charges/ Wed, 31 Dec 2025 14:32:59 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1655788 OCALA, Fla. (WSVN) — Several members of the Marion County Fire Rescue team in Central Florida have been fired for accusations of brutally hazing a rookie firefighter. Some of those now former employees face criminal charges.

In interviews, the four fire rescue members facing charges said that it all started out as a playful joke, but department leaders said what actually happened was anything but.

In total, 10 fire rescue members were fired for failing to report the alleged hazing at a firehouse in Ocala last month.

“It’s a devastating loss with the 10 personnel and the experience that they have, and we don’t take that lightly,” Marion County Fire Rescue spokesperson James Lucas said.

Marion County considers the November incident as an act of violence.

“Couldn’t breathe for a little bit, and I was, like, trying to actually, like, fight and get out,” the alleged victim said in an audio recording.

Marion County Fire Rescue released 15 hours of video from 14 different interviewees, as well as hundreds of pages of investigative documents.

Every single employee questioned told a similar story, saying they roughhoused often.

“Not an excuse, but this is, like, what’s been happening to me all the time,” one of the accused fire rescue members said in an interview.

They also told deputies that they didn’t think things started out all that serious.

“Because I just thought we were all just joking around with it,” a different fire rescue member accused of assisting in the hazing said.

They admitted, however, that things got out of hand last month.

Marion County Fire Rescue policy states there is no tolerance for hazing, and firefighters have a duty to report any harassment they see.

Officials said this case was only reported after a firefighter at a different station heard what happened.

“We are here to answer their call on their worst day. We hope to restore the trust and confidence that the citizens once had in us,” Lucas said.

An attorney representing one of the accused firefighters said in a statement that he hopes to get the matter resolved in an appropriate manner.

2 deputies dive into pond to save elderly man from drowning in his car near St. Augustine https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/2-deputies-dive-into-pond-to-save-elderly-man-from-drowning-in-his-car-near-st-augustine/ Thu, 11 Dec 2025 15:31:47 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1649947 ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. (WSVN) – Two St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office deputies came to the rescue of an elderly man after he accidentally drove his car into a pond.

Body camera footage shows Deputies Eddie Monduy and Jeremiah Foster as they rushed into the water after finding the man in his car near St. Augustine back in November.

Monduy and Foster recalled the critical first moments.

“The first thing I saw was water close to his neck area, so I realized this is very urgent,” Monduy said.

The pair said they had to act fast.

“I get my window break. I keep it in my door panel. We approached the vehicle, ended up, you know, upon impact, we initially broke the window because at first we couldn’t get the door open,” Foster said. “We made entry to the door and then, after that, we were able to retrieve the subject and then bring him out of the water safely.”

“You start thinking about the water, the conditions, things like that, but in reality, no amount of training could prepare you for the exact actions you take as long as you’re taking actions to try to help this person,” Monduy said.

Once safely out of the water, paramedics with St. Johns County Fire and Rescue rendered aid to the man.

Monduy said the elderly man, “was still in a condition where he couldn’t really articulate or formulate in sentences. So for me personally, we could tell he was very elderly, reminded me of some family members perhaps. So it was sad that he was alone, but very relieved that we were able to help him and no major injuries.”

Weeks later, the two men are being hailed as heroes.

Deputy Monduy has heard this title before. Back in September of 2024, he helped save a young man from jumping off a bridge.

“Don’t do it, dude. Listen, your life is still young, bro,” another officer said to the young man as heard in bodycam footage.

“Myself and a few other deputies were able to, from behind, kind of just tackle him to the ground,” Monduy said.

The deputies’ heroic actions are being honored for rescuing this elderly man in the pond, but they said they were simply doing their job.

“My son thinks I’m a hero, and I would hope one day, when he’s a man himself, he would also dive in the water,” Monduy said. “So, regardless of whether he’s wearing this uniform or not, put other people first to help them.”

“It’s nice, you know, we were able to save him, get him the help he needs, you know, and that’s what we’re here to do every day, and that’s why we love our job,” Foster said.

Thankfully, the driver walked away from the accident with only minor cuts and bruises.

Driver accused of trying to hit runners in LGBTQ+ group in West Palm Beach may face hate crime charges, police say https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/driver-accused-of-trying-to-hit-runners-in-lgbtq-group-in-west-palm-beach-may-face-hate-crime-charges-police-say/ Wed, 26 Nov 2025 18:23:30 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1645808 Police in West Palm Beach arrested a man who, detectives said, tried to run over members of an LGBTQ+ running group, and the dangerous drive was caught on video.

Witnesses said the suspect, identified as 43-year-old Ihab Mustafa El Mahmoud, tried to run down the group of runners three times, Monday night.

The tense terrifying ordeal ended with the driver hopping the curb and speeding away.

“All right, guys, I’m going to call 911,” a witness is heard on the video.

Rudolph Galindo believes he was the initial target.

“I thought he was going to hit me. I was terrified; I thought he was going to hit me,” he said.

Galindo is part of a group called Night Runners, an LGBTQ-run club. Twice a week, they gather in Howard Park, located at 1302 Parker Ave., and go for a run..

Galindo showed where the man had parked his Ford Bronco.

“The car was parked here, towards the end in the corner,” he said.

Galindo said he asked the suspect if he was there to run.

“He seemed aggravated that I was asking him if he was there for the running group, so he said “no.” I just stepped away,” he said.

A short time later, Galindo said, El Mahmoud attacked.

“He got into his car, pulled out — accelerating, pedal to the metal, and coming right at me where I was standing,” he said. “This car is flying at you. I have never seen a car fly that fast right towards me in my entire life.”

Galindo and the other 40 members of the club ran for the trees for protection.

“Everybody came behind this tree that’s right here, and also this banyan tree right here, to be in a safe spot,” he said.

El Mahmoud sped through the lot one more time before leaving, doing a U-turn and coming back through again.

“We were behind a tree, but at this point, it seemed like he didn’t have any limits of what he was wanting to do or willing to do,” said Galindo.

It didn’t take long for West Palm Beach Police officers to find the suspect. He was located at a downtown parking garage, where he was taken into custody without incident.

Galindo said he can’t be sure whether El Mahmoud was just scaring them or whether he really wanted to hurt someone.

“It’s difficult to say. He certainly had the ability to do so, and I don’t think he would have been upset if he did hit somebody,” he said.

El Mahmoud is now facing a number of charges, including two counts of aggravated assault. Police said he may also be charged with a hate crime.

Muslim USF students harassed during morning prayers; 3 face felony charges https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/muslim-usf-students-harassed-during-morning-prayers-3-face-felony-charges/ Mon, 24 Nov 2025 12:48:24 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1644866 A video posted on social media by students from the University of South Florida’s Muslim Student Association shows a disruption during a morning prayer that led police to file felony charges against three men.

In the video, it appears that a group of three men is eating bacon and harassing the Muslim students over their religious beliefs while they prayed.

“Take that towel off of your head! Take that towel off of your head,” one man yelled at the students in the video.

“They tried to intimidate us multiple times,” Saajid Khan, a USF student from the Muslim Student Association, told the press.

Students say they gather for prayer on campus often.

“What do you want? We came here to pray. Why are you here?” a student in the video said to their harassers.

The USF srudents who were targeted said this is the first time something like this has happened.

“In a world where we are already a minority — we are already fighting our way up — it makes us feel more isolated,” Khan said.

The perpetrators, who livestreamed the event, claim affiliation with a group called the “Kingdom Reconcilers following the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”

“Whatever safety we felt, it feels like that was stripped in that moment,” Khan said about the harassment they endured.

Tampa Police have identified all three men involved in the video. They face felony counts of disturbing a peaceful religious assembly.

USF officials said they are working with the Muslim Student Association to identify a location on campus to hold future activities. Those who were harassed, however, said they are looking for a more meaningful conclusion.

“Charges would be one thing. If it could get to that, that would be great. Just some kind of repercussion to show them and others that this isn’t OK,” Khan said.

Officials said the men are not affiliated with USF. The university said it plans to issue trespass orders to keep them off campus.

South Florida man with prosthetic leg pursues boxing glory — with help from his gym https://wsvn.com/sports/south-florida-man-with-prosthetic-leg-pursues-boxing-glory-with-help-from-his-gym/ Tue, 11 Nov 2025 15:21:43 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1641113 DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) — A South Florida boxer refuses to give up his dreams of making it big in the ring — all while wearing a prosthetic leg — and his community is backing him every step of the way.

Julian Gonzalez is always pushing himself.

“Be quick, you know, be fast — in my hands, in my speed, in my thinking,” he said.

The young pugilist has been chasing his dream of becoming a professional boxer, but it’s how he’s doing it that makes his story stand out.

“You know there’s no Paralympic boxing, so,” he said.

Now he’s proving he doesn’t need his own lane in the ring. He recently came face to face with an able-bodied boxer, heavier and more experienced.

“It was a good fight,” he said. “As soon as that bell rung, and it was just me and him, it was like all that completely washed away.”

That’s when all his hours of training paid off.

“All that work, the two and a half years, the weeks leading up to it, it was phenomenal, phenomenal,” he said.

Back in October, Gonzalez won his first fight and scored his first belt.

“The feeling of having my hand raised, in that ring, is like no other,” he said.

That showed him, and his coaches at Phoenix Boxing Gym in Delray Beach, that he’s ready to compete.

“I am able to compete level to level with people who are two-legged, and I feel like, with how I move, I move better than most people with two legs. My footwork is pretty decent,” said Gonzalez.

Now he has the belt to show it, and a community rooting for him.

“I was chasing him around, trying to get his wraps off his hands, and he didn’t want to know. I think he sleeps with that belt,” said Michael Hockton, who owns Phoenix Boxing Gym.

Now Gonzalez getting ready for a 2026 filled with fights and more wins.

“It went well, it went well,” he said.

Gonzalez is looking to raise $20,000 for a new prosthetic leg, So far, he’s raised more than $2,000 through his nonprofit, known as We Box For Life. For more information, click here.

‘I’ll do it the hard way’: Maryland man charged with assault after lunging at judge, head-butting deputy https://wsvn.com/news/us-world/ill-do-it-the-hard-way-maryland-man-charged-with-assault-after-lunging-at-judge-head-butting-deputy/ Fri, 07 Nov 2025 12:34:19 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1639127 TOWSON, Md. (WSVN) — A Maryland man is facing additional charges after he was seen lunging at a judge during a court appearance, all because he refused to provide a DNA sample.

While in handcuffs and leg irons 27-year-old Gabriel Ballentine appeared to try to attack Baltimore County Circuit Court Judge Jan Alexander back in October.

Law clerk Mike Brown Jr. said he saw it all unfold.

“You could sense his frustration, kind of grow more and more contentious. He was becoming a little hostile,” he said, “So, again, at that point, my only thought was to keep an eye on him.”

But Brown did more than that. Cameras rolled as he jumped across the bench trying to stop the attack.

“So I moved, you know, and there really wasn’t time to think or hesitate. I just reacted,” he said.

Ballentine had been taken into court for failing to comply with a DNA collection.

The defendant refused, even after the judge told him it was required by Maryland law.

“I’m not giving my DNA sample,” Ballentine told Alexander.

“Then I will give you the order, and I will sign the order forcing him to be compliant. You can do it the easy way or the hard way, sir,” said Alexander.

“I’ll do it the hard way, then. Y’all going to have to kill me. I’m not with that,” said Ballentine.

“Well, we’re not going to kill you, sir,” said Alexander,

According to a court document, “Mr. Ballentine became angry and loud, and after numerous attempts to explain the law, he was escorted out of the courtroom.”

But while leaving with sheriff’s deputies, the motion Ballentine made got Brown to try to intervene.

The deputies pulled Ballentine away and took him to the floor.

The court record indicates Ballentine head-butted one of the deputies trying to restrain him.

Now Ballentine is charged with two counts of assault involving the sheriff’s deputy, disorderly conduct and making a threat to injure a judge.

“The plan was never to fight the guy. My plan was really to just intercept him, and I think I shocked him more than anything,” said Brown.

In the end, Ballentine still had to give a DNA sample following the judge’s order.

Martin County Sheriff’s Office enlists help from otter for search-and-rescue, recovery missions https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/martin-county-sheriffs-office-enlists-help-from-otter-for-search-and-rescue-recovery-missions/ Fri, 31 Oct 2025 22:01:28 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1636902 MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. (WSVN) – The Martin County Sheriff’s Office enlists the help of an adorable otter for an important job on the force.

“Splash” is a 2-year-old Asian small-clawed otter that poses for photos on Instagram and has a particular set of skills to help rescue teams.

“In Florida, we have a problem with alligators; they grab remains and they stuff them somewhere and they are very hard to find because most of the time we’re diving in water that is less than two inches of visibility, so everything is tactile, so we miss them, we can’t find them. He doesn’t have that problem; he can go right down there and show us where it is,” said Michael Hadsell, the president of Peace River K9 Search and Rescue, a nonprofit organization that provides specially trained animals in recovery missions.

Splash has undergone specialized training as part of a dive team for Peace River K9 Search and Rescue to search for human remains.

Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek believes Splash’s unique talents in the water will be a major asset in cases involving individuals lost in bodies of water.

“Yes, we will, again, we have one or two missing individuals a year that are in bodies of water, and if we can’t find them immediately through regular diving techniques, we absolutely will do that,” Budensiek.

So far, Splash has succeeded on four missions and has gone on more than 20 alongside officers.

“I’m trying to put the odds in our favor so we get more recoveries, that’s what the otters are for,” said Hadsell. “I think we’ll be good at 10 years for him, then he’ll retire as the coach and watch Animal Planet, I guess.”

Splash is expected to have a work life of up to 10 years.

Man carjacked at gunpoint in Daytona Beach Shores shares ordeal; Fort Lauderdale man charged https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/man-carjacked-at-gunpoint-in-daytona-beach-shores-shares-ordeal-fort-lauderdale-man-charged/ Thu, 09 Oct 2025 11:52:32 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1630797 DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Fla. (WSVN) — A South Florida man who carjacked a driver at gunpoint in Volusia County was caught by deputies hiding in the mangroves after a wild bailout into a river, and now the victim is recalling the moments his routine drive home turned into a life-threatening encounter.

Body camera video shows Volusia County Sheriff’s Office deputies searching through the mangroves of a river in Volusia County for 34-year-old Grant Hagood-James, Monday night.

“This is the sheriff’s office. You are under arrest. You need to crawl out to the boat officers or come to shore and surrender,” a deputy is heard telling the suspect,

Hagood-James a Fort Lauderdale resident, is accused in the armed carjacking.

His victim, who identified himself as Kyle, shared his story days later.

“I realized, you know, my life is in danger right now,” he said.

Kyle said he was trying to get home after dark when he saw a man waving him down on A1A in Daytona Beach Shores.

“He said he needed a ride, and after taking a look at him I thought, ‘This guy is sketchy.’ I said, ‘Nope,'” said Kyle. “And I started to pull forward, but he stayed with the window, and that’s when he said, ‘I need this.’ That’s when I realized he had a gun pointed at me.”

Kyle said the man took off with his car, along with his phone and wallet inside.

The victim said he flagged down the next car he saw.

“And the person actually stopped, the first car that came by,” he said.

Kyle said that driver let him use their phone to call 911.

While that information was coming in, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said, another 911 call came from a restaurant in Port Orange, not far from where the carjacking happened.

“They’re calling and saying that a white male swam up to the restaurant on the Intracoastal, climbed in and ran through the restaurant, took his shirt off, ran back through the restaurant, goes back into the river and swam into the mangroves,” said Chitwood.

It led to a large response on the ground and by air that included four different agencies.

“We were able to locate this guy hiding in the mangroves,” said Chitwood.

Hagood-James was taken into custody. He’s now being charged with armed carjacking.

As for Kyle, he said he isn’t sure whether or not he’ll stop for someone on the side of the road again.

“It depends, because thankfully, the next person stopped for me when I needed help. But I’ll definitely be a little more cautious next time,” he said.

Authorities recovered Kyle’s car.

Hagood-James is being held without bond.

Tourists recount events of scary elephant attack during safari tour in South Africa https://wsvn.com/news/us-world/tourists-recount-events-of-scary-elephant-attack-during-safari-tour-in-south-africa/ Tue, 07 Oct 2025 21:10:58 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1630120 Two tourists are recounting the terrifying moment an elephant charged their boat on a safari trip in southern Africa.

Video captured the moments when a massive elephant, protecting the herd’s young calves, began charging at a group on a canoe safari in Botswana, South Africa, flipping the boat over.

Jeff Melvin and Larry Unrein were on that tour boat that they say started as an incredible adventure but took an unexpected turn as they approached the herd of elephants.

“The first thought that came to my mind was, ‘This is the end of me,'” said Melvin. “We could tell that they were kind of getting a little annoyed at our presence and then, just in the blink of an eye, things kind of changed.”

“What we did not see was the mom with the two babies, they were hidden in some tall grass, but out of sight,” said Unrein.

Within minutes, the elephant charged toward them.

Melvin and Unrein made it out safely with the help of the guides, but mere moments later, that same elephant, trampled a fellow tourist, who, thankfully, survived.

“She was pushed in twice and held under and if it wasn’t for the water, she would not be with us,” said Unrein.

The water, acting as a cushion, helped conceal the woman from the elephant, allowing her to escape.

Zoo Miami Communications Director Ron Magill said the tourists are lucky to be alive.

“That patron was incredibly lucky that this happened in the water, because generally speaking, elephants, what they do, when they go after somebody, is they literally try to mash them into the ground,” said Magill.

According to experts, an elephant guarding calves is considered one of the most dangerous animals in the wild.

“There’s nothing more dangerous than an elephant mother with young calves, they’re incredibly protective,” said Magill. “I think it’s important that people understand you need to respect distance, you need to give animals distance.”

Melvin and Unrein are just thankful to have survived.

“I thought for sure I was dead and then once was safe, I was, it was just jubilation, I was very happy to be alive,” said Unrein.

Local guides said they remained calm while shouting to scatter the elephants.

Intrepid golden retriever and his human climb the Colorado 14ers — even Pikes Peak https://wsvn.com/news/us-world/intrepid-golden-retriever-and-his-human-climb-the-colorado-14ers-even-pikes-peak/ Fri, 03 Oct 2025 13:00:15 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1629124 DENVER (WSVN) — A very good boy is being praised for conquering Colorado’s toughest mountain mission.

For Denver, Colorado resident Jonathan Sperlazza, calm autumn days are a nice break after a summer spent hiking with his pet dog Jackson. The golden retriever who’s done something most humans haven’t: climbed some of the tallest peaks in the U.S.

“His tail was always wagging. He always wanted to lead the trail, and he really just loved just being out in the mountains with me.” said Sperlazza.

When Sperlazza moved to Colorado, he was eager to take Jackson out on the trails. The four-legged explorer and his owner, wondering if they could put the state’s highest spots in their sights.

“I’d heard about this Colorado thing called the 14ers, so I’m gonna go give it a shot with him and see if he enjoys it and see if I enjoy it, and the rest is pretty much history,” said Sperlazza. “We got addicted really, really fast.”

Together they started slowly knocking off 14ers.

“Every time I got my hiking bag, he would get like really ecstatic,” said Sperlazza. “He’s just having such a good time, and he just figuring out the next paw to take, the next step to take, what ledges to go to. ‘OK, I actually need to listen to my dad’ or ‘I need a booty boost on this one.'”

To climb safely, Jackson has his own gear: little Kevlar booties to protect his paws, a rope leash and safety harnesses in case he needs to be carried, and always a snack.

“He goes absolutely bananas for apples,” said Sperlazza.

Jackson’s human has documented every hike, climb and summit they’ve hit.

“So it’s been really fun to look back kind of as like a digital diary, so when [Jackson is], like, old and gray and can’t really do any hiking, I’ll be able to, like, lay with him and say, ‘Hey, man, like, you did Maroon Bells,'” said Sperlazza.

In September, the duo peaked — literally — by climbing Pikes Peak, the highest summit in the Southern Rocky Mountain’s Front Range. It was Sperlazza final 14er. For Jackson, it was his 47th climb.

“I wanted to pick a 14er that he could join me on because he started this all, and I think, if it wasn’t for him, I would have never been even close to 58,” said Sperlazza.

No matter how many hikes they have ahead, Sperlazza said, it’s the happy trail of memories left on the mountain tops that will stay with him.

“I’ll be able to reflect on for the rest of my life, and he’ll be impossible to ever replace, and for that, he’s just a truly special dog to me,” he said.

Sperlazza has planned carefully by hiking on slower days and times to avoid crowds, and selecting the simplest routes for Jackson.

Cellphone video captures dangerous drivers ramming into each other, pulling PIT maneuver in Fort Myers https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/cellphone-video-captures-dangerous-drivers-ramming-into-each-other-pulling-pit-maneuver-in-fort-myers/ Wed, 03 Sep 2025 21:34:55 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1609018 FORT MYERS, FLA. (WSVN) – A woman in Fort Myers captured a dramatic drive on camera showing a pair of drivers seemingly ramming into each other on purpose.

The cellphone video shows a car ramming into the back of another vehicle on the road before appearing to speed up and veering off the roadway before performing a PIT maneuver, forcing both vehicles to come to a stop in the middle of the street.

Kaylee Taylor, the driver who captured the apparent road rage on camera, said the two drivers took turns crashing into each before it ended.

“Was swerving and then they started taking turns hitting each other, so one would hit the other car, the other would hit each other and back and forth, back and forth,” said Taylor.

She was driving down the road with her brother and son when they captured the tense confrontation.

“My brother got on the phone and dialed 911 at that point, and then that’s when the PIT maneuver happened as soon as he started dialing,” said Taylor.

“I was, like, definitely shocked because seeing that stuff, it shakes you up because when they started hitting each other and, like, instantly, like just call 911, like, someone can get hurt,” said Jacob Taylor, her brother.

Fort Myers Police would not call it road rage yet as officials are still investigating the incident. They did say both drivers involved did not want to press charges and nobody has been arrested or ticketed at this time.

Despite authorities not calling it road rage, Jacob believes it’s very clear just from what he witnessed.

“It was definitely a road rage incident. I even got a video, too, of the cars hitting each other, yeah it was definitely road rage,” said Jacob.

Kaylee said she’d never seen anything like that happen in front of her, with the experience leaving her terrified.

“Normally, when people road rage, it’s a little bit of back and forth, it never gets that far, it’s something you see on the news and then for it to actually happen in front of me? Terrifying,” said Kaylee.

(WSVN) – A high school teacher in Jacksonville has been reassigned after a viral video appears to show him body slamming a student during a pep rally.

Students and staff at Westside High School were playing a game of musical chairs during a pep rally on Friday when Nyla Millikin was thrown onto the hardwood floor.

“I was in the chair already. [He] grabbed me and then threw me, basically slamming me, and I was sitting there for a little minute like, ‘Why am I on the ground?’ Like it happened so fast, in a blur, so I was like, ‘Wow,'” said Millikin.

The force of the slam shown in the viral video caused Millikin to knock her out of her shoes.

“She said, ‘Mom, my head is hurting me really, really bad and on my side,’ and I said, ‘So, what happened, love?’ And she said, ‘A teacher picked me up and slammed me,'” said Joanna, Millikin’s mother.

Millikin said she ended up suffering a concussion and bruised ribs and hasn’t been back to school since it happened.

Her family is demanding more to be done after the teacher was reassigned from his position.

“Just imagine getting slammed on a gym floor that is hard, and like my mom said, we need to do more, because we go through this uniform policy, and I want to see some action,” said Millikin’s sister.

The teacher sent a message to Millikin after the incident, asking if she was OK, but her mom says that’s too little, too late.

“He should’ve checked up on my daughter instead of running away like, you know, he won a million dollars,” she said.

Despite her injuries, Millikin said she’s just focused on moving forward and choosing to forgive the teacher for his actions.

She also said she will return to school once she’s cleared by doctors.

“Me, I don’t have nothing against him. Like they said, it wasn’t intentional, but at the end of the day, a grown man, by the way, me on the ground. I’m forgiving regardless, I’m a Christian, so I’m forgiving him,” said Millikin.

The school district so far has reassigned the teacher to a job that does not involve direct interaction with students.

101-year-old veteran pilot takes special victory flight to honor decades of service https://wsvn.com/news/us-world/101-year-old-veteran-pilot-takes-special-victory-flight-to-honor-decades-of-service/ Mon, 11 Aug 2025 22:18:01 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1601075 A World War II veteran took to the sky to honor his years of service and the memory of those he served with.

Joseph Peterburs rode in the P-51 Mustang plane he first piloted more than 80 years ago.

The 101-year-old veteran said flying in formation in the skies over northern California brought back special memories.

“It brings back 80 years of memories, of my memories when I was a young double mint care youth of 19 years old flying this aircraft. It was really a joy,” said Peterburs.

He earned his pilot wings and was commissioner as a second lieutenant in 1944, all before his 20th birthday.

He was assigned to the 55th squadron, 20th fighter group in England — completing 49 combat missions during World War II.

He recently went back to England to take a victory lap.

“I was given a ride in a P-51, and I flew over my old base, did a victory roll because it was actually 80 years to the day that I was shot down and I wasn’t able to come back and do a victory roll, so I did it,” he said.

Peterburs’ military career didn’t end with World War II.

He also flew 76 combat missions during the Korean War and was wounded by shrapnel and bullets.

Then he served as a squadron flight-lead, a group-training officer and was promoted to colonel in 1969 before retiring from the military in 1979.

He said this latest flight, 46 years since he retired, carries special meaning.

“A show of patriotism and democracy and the spirit of flying and, particularly, in memory of all those young men that didn’t make it back,” said Peterburs.

During his flight, he was joined by his granddaughter, who flew alongside him in her own P-51 Mustang.

The couple was transported to the hospital with minor injuries and are expected to be okay.

The grandchild and dog were not injured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Florida man arrested after choking, kidnapping friend during PlayStation 5 sale https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/florida-man-arrested-after-choking-kidnapping-friend-during-playstation-5-sale/ Thu, 10 Jul 2025 13:50:17 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1591209 LEE COUNTY, Fla. (WSVN) — A Facebook Marketplace meetup in Florida went awry after, deputies say, a man lured a friend to his home and held him captive for ransom.

Nicholas Flores was arrested on Tuesday, accused of tying, choking, and kidnapping a friend during the planned PlayStation 5 transaction in Lee County.

The victim says he met Flores to buy his gaming system on Monday. Once he arrived inside the residence, Flores allegedly pulled out a machete and knocked the victim unconscious before putting him in a closet.

While stuck inside with his legs and wrists bound by duct tape, authorities say Flores proceeded to make multiple transactions to his own account.

The victim managed to escape while Flores was asleep, going to a family member’s home and seeking medical attention. Hours later, deputies were notified and took Flores into custody.

While executing the search warrant, deputies located the items used to tie up the victim, along with a cocaine and fentanyl mix inside Flores’ home.

He has since been charged with robbery with a weapon, kidnapping, and possession of a controlled substance.

Zephyrhills couple speaks out after husband goes into cardiac arrest, saved by good Samaritans https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/zephyrhills-couple-speaks-out-after-husband-goes-into-cardiac-arrest-saved-by-good-samaritans/ Mon, 07 Jul 2025 14:02:50 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1590196 A family got to spend the Fourth of July together thanks to the help of good Samaritans who sprang into action when they saw someone in need of CPR.

Bruce and Tiffany Brown live in Zephyrhills, but they came to the east coast last week for a quick getaway with family on Peanut Island.

“We started with a beautiful day; we went out, we took a little shuttle over to the little island, and we snorkeled for a long time,” said Tiffany.

Then, their beach day took a dangerous turn when Bruce went into cardiac arrest. Nearby strangers, however, jumped in and turned into heroes.

“People all around, lots of noise, you know, the sound of waves. But I heard what I now know was him trying to get his last breath in,” Tiffany said. “Yep, Matt, he was trained in the Navy on CPR and first aid. There’s also a nurse, Jennifer, and they figured out very quickly they had to start CPR.”

A nurse, a service member, and a doctor worked on Bruce for 45 minutes doing chest compressions.

“The nurse looked up and said, ‘You know I’m doing all I can, but can anybody pray?'” said Lindsay Ferrell. “I felt like the Lord just told me to get down there and start praying for him. So I did. And I was hanging on to his wife; she was over there, and I was praying for him.”

They say they lost his pulse three times before someone found a defibrillator on the beach and got him going.

By then, first responders had arrived and rushed him to the hospital.

“Two different doctors came in and told us he probably didn’t have 24 hours to live, especially with the situation and his age,” said Tiffany.

At 71, Bruce has a history of heart problems and is diabetic. However, he thankfully survived Wednesday’s nightmare.

“It was no bright light, no heaven, but it’s just kind of like a gray scale,” Bruce said. “And it was kind of there—there’s a slippery slope, but there were steps going up. So it’s kind of like your choice now. Are you going to go back, or are you going to start moving forward?”

Those who kept him alive visited Bruce in the hospital. A week later, he’s tired, occasionally coughing, and uses his hamburger pillow for comfort.

“One thing about chest compression, especially for that long, is that it does do some wear and tear on your ribs and your lung and stuff like that,” he said. “But overall, I’m just thankful to be alive and above ground, and I got a loving wife here who’s taking good care of me and putting me back into shape.”

As Bruce continues to recover, the couple are leaning on each other now and final humor in the little things.

“If I get out of doing dishes and trash for another week,” said Bruce.

“I mean, as Christians, we feel like God ordered the steps that day,” said Tiffany. “He knew exactly what was going to happen, and he placed the right people there.”

While Bruce heals, the married couple plans to open Eyes to Hear Health to teach the importance of CPR and AEDs, crediting their faith.

Dashcam footage reveals moments man opens fire, chases garbage truck drivers in Tampa https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/dashcam-footage-reveals-moments-man-opens-fire-chases-garbage-truck-drivers-in-tampa/ Thu, 03 Jul 2025 16:56:54 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1589324 Newly released video showcases the frightening moments a high-speed chase in Tampa ended in a shooting.

When the duo encountered Quinson Croson at a Wawa at the start of their work week, Brandon Lee knew something was up.

Lee tells investigators Croson was drunk. When he and his coworker returned to the truck, he was not getting the message.

“I don’t talk like that,” he said. “Chill, bro.”

Lee and his coworker began to drive away; however, according to Zephyrhills Police, Croson followed them.

An argument ensued, continuing down the road before, investigators say, Croson pulled out a gun.

“Hey, hey,” he said. “No, bro. You did what you did, bro. Chill, bro. Chill, bro.”

While Croson chased the garbage truck, he slammed into it, opening fire on the duo. Lee was struck in the arm, and his passenger fell out of the truck.

Both Lee and his passenger escaped and are expected to recover.

Croson was later arrested and charged with two counts of attempted homicide and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Miami mother who gave birth moments after maternity shoot shares unforgettable moments https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/miami-mother-who-gave-birth-moments-after-maternity-shoot-shares-unforgettable-moments/ Thu, 03 Jul 2025 15:35:53 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1589281 A Miami mother is speaking out, sharing the moments a maternity photo shoot took an unforgettable turn after she suddenly went into labor.

Koko Williams had given birth twice before the incident two years ago, once as a surrogate and once for her first child. The Miami native, however, said she was induced both times and didn’t know what natural labor felt like.

“I went into labor at my maternity shoot, and 30 minutes later I gave birth,” she said. “Pretty wild, pretty crazy.”

As Williams struck a pose, the contractions started.

“I was supposed to have a water birth, a very peaceful water birth,” she said. “But yeah. Baby girl decided to have a grand entrance into this world in her own way.”

It became a race against time to Broward Health after her water broke moments after getting into the car.

The next thing she knew, Williams was on a gurney with a team of medical professionals rushing her down the hospital corridors to a delivery room.

Her mother captured “Sophia Serenity’s” grand entrance into this world on camera.

Williams’ updates are now making millions of people smile. She says little Sophia is a showstopper today, which was expected, considering how she came into the world.

Romanian national arrested after appearing on surveillance committing ‘distraction scam’ in Delray Beach https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/romanian-national-arrested-after-appearing-on-surveillance-committing-distraction-scam-in-delray-beach/ Thu, 19 Jun 2025 15:34:32 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1585111 DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) — Delray Beach officials say they’ve caught and cuffed a thief accused of targeting the elderly.

Thirty-two-year-old Romanian national Romica Aciocanasei is accused of pretending to find dropped cash before using sleight of hand to swipe debit cards.

Newly released surveillance footage reveals the moments he targeted a woman walking out of a Whole Foods store, all the while using a fake identity.

Without her even noticing, police say Aciocanasei had already stolen the unsuspecting victim’s debit card.

“The suspect says, ‘Hey, you dropped a 20,’ waves a 20 in front of her, and tells her to put it in her wallet,” said Delray Beach Police Detective Gio Milicchio. “As she opens up her wallet, you could actually see him put his hand over her wallet and remove her debit card.”

Detective Milicchio says this was not an isolated incident; Romica is tied to a statewide crime ring targeting older adults from Palm Beach to Pinellas County and even Texas. The case is now part of a larger statewide investigation involving multiple agencies. They call it a distraction scam.

“Usually they would target big box grocery stores,” said Milicchio. “They would stand behind the victim in line. As the victim was punching their PIN number into the little terminal, they would watch them punch their PIN number in.”

Once they have access to a PIN, they’ll then approach their victim, claiming you dropped cash, all to get into a wallet or purse.

“He was definitely working with at least five to six other people doing the same MO, dressing the same,” said Milicchio. “They all had thick beards. They all tried to look alike so they could throw people off.”

Romaci was shown on surveillance using stolen debit cards just minutes after the theft, sometimes withdrawing thousands of dollars in cash at multiple locations. He was finally caught in January outside the Whole Foods after he and a woman were seen approaching multiple shoppers. Although the woman ran, police caught and detained Aciocanasei.

“We were never able to get anything on him, just a surveillance video. Since they were foreigners, nobody was ever able to locally ID them until we got them in January,” said Milicchio.

According to police, Aciocanasei also has a criminal history in Europe and may be tied to a larger Romanian theft ring operating in the United States.

‘I could see her hand hanging:’ Mother of girl bitten by shark describes gruesome attack in bodycam video https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/i-could-see-her-hand-hanging-mother-of-girl-bitten-by-shark-describes-gruesome-attack-in-bodycam-video/ Fri, 13 Jun 2025 21:59:58 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1583034 BOCA GRANDE, Fla. (WSVN) — Deputy-worn bodycam video shows the tense moments law enforcement reponded to a shark bite off Florida’s Gulf Coast, as well as an anguished mother describing the gruesome attack that severed her daughter’s hand.

A 911 call captured the terrifying moments in the immediate aftermath of Wednesday’s attack on Boca Grand Beach, near Fort Myers, on Wednesday.

” Is she breathing?” asked the dispatcher.

“Yes, she’s breathing,” said a caller.

“OK, all right,” said the dispatcher.

The bodycam footage shows a responding Lee County Sheriff’s Office deputy asking Leah Lendel’s mother, Nadia Lendel, to describe what happened.

“My husband was further out, and [Leah], she was snorkeling from, like, four feet away from me,” said Nadia.

“OK, in water about four feet deep?” said the deputy.

“Yeah, like, that’s probably four feet deep, and so she dips in — like, she always snorkels, she hasn’t been around my feet — and then she flies out and, like, I look over because she – I don’t know if I heard her yell or what, but she went like that, and I could see her hand hanging,” said Nadia.

“OK,” said the deputy.

“Like a piece, and just blood everywhere,” said Nadia.

“OK,” said the deputy.

“So just yelling, and then the man working over there ran over, ’cause I was screaming so hard, like, ‘help.’ They needed someone to call ASAP.” said Nadia,

Witness Alfonso Tello said he saw the marine predator.

“So, it was a big shark, like eight feet. I would say like eight feet,” he said.

Construction workers were working on a home along Shore Lane, just steps away. They jumped in to help, using a towel as a tourniquet to stop the bleeding.

One of those workers, Raynel Lugo, said he stayed by the victim’s side to keep her calm.

“I was talking to her. I was telling that, ‘What’s your name? How are you? I got a daughter just like you. What a beautiful day,’ you know,” he said. “In the meantime, I was trying to check her hand, and I saw in real life what’s going on.”

“We see the little girl crying, so when we see that little girl coming out from the water with no hand, it was like something that, like, gets me,” said Tello.

Leah’s family is receiving help with medical expenses. She’s set to undergo physical therapy to improve the function of her hand.

7 officers appear before judge after deadly high speed chase in Boynton Beach leaves 2 dead https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/7-officers-appear-before-judge-after-deadly-high-speed-chase-in-boynton-beach-leaves-2-dead/ Fri, 06 Jun 2025 16:43:15 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1580934 Seven West Palm Beach police officers are facing criminal charges months after a high-speed chase led to a deadly crash. According to prosecutors, some of the officers did not stop to help the two victims.

Junel Pochette, a husband and father to the victims, sat still in the courtroom as each officer arrived for their hearings.

“The police said they are assigned for protection. But, they destroyed my family,” he said. “It’s sad.”

Authorities say the officers were chasing a driver in Boynton Beach last summer when the driver crashed into Pochette’s wife and daughter, 57-year-old Marcia Pochette and 27-year-old Jenice Woods. Both women would succumb to their injuries.

According to court documents, some officers never stopped to help the dying victims, even driving past the mangled vehicle without offering aid.

“We never know what could have happened if they stopped to check for a pulse to see if they were still breathing,” said a woman. Yet they left the scene recklessly driving.”

Prosecutors say the officers drove back to West Palm Beach, traveling at over 100 miles per hour.

“More likely than not, they knew at that time, ‘We really, really, really messed up’,” said Scott Smith, an attorney.

The family says they plan to file a wrongful death lawsuit.

Wild weather sparks fire and creates waterspout in Florida backyard https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/wild-weather-sparks-fire-and-creates-waterspout-in-florida-backyard/ Wed, 28 May 2025 19:37:42 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1577956 NEAR ORLANDO (WSVN) — Mother Nature left a Florida neighborhood in shock after wild weather sparked a home fire and created a waterspout nearby.

Deseret Shearer said the thunderstorms rolled in Monday night to her Waterford Lakes neighborhood near Orlando.

The bad weather leaving a mark as a roof caved in, partially destroying an attic, and a nearby home on Bluewater Circle got struck by lightning and erupted in flames.

“You don’t see it very often,” said Shearer. “I heard the lightning a couple times and it was extremely loud”

The homeowner also shared video of a waterspout being formed on a retention pool behind her home.

“It was loud, so I started to look over there, it was starting to suck shingles off the neighbor’s roof and I was like ‘ooo,’ and starting filming it and then it started to form over the water,” said Shearer.

She said weather like this comes with the territory of living in Florida.

“It comes out of nowhere, and its invisible. It starts out of nowhere, and its there,” said Shearer.

Thankfully, everyone made it out of the home safely.

Florida teen recounts moments Volusia Beach County patrol sergeant ran her over https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/florida-teen-recounts-moments-volusia-beach-county-patrol-sergeant-ran-her-over/ Tue, 27 May 2025 15:56:45 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1577503 DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) — A Florida teen recalled her holiday horror after a lifeguard truck ran her and her friend over while they were sunbathing on Daytona Beach.

A relaxing day on the beach quickly turned into a nightmare for 19-year-old Sierra Trumble last Memorial Day.

“I wake up, and next thing you know, I have a tire on my face on the right side of my head, and all I feel is this immense pressure,” she said.

Sierra suffered severe injuries to the side of her face from the tire and says she had a lacerated liver as well.

The Ormond Beach teen’s year-long recovery has been both a physical and mental journey.

“I still get, like, you know, like those flashbacks now and then, and, like, everything really reminds me of it, but every day it’s easier to kind of, like, get through it,” she said.

The Volusia County Beach Patrol sergeant responsible appeared in court last September, apologizing to the two girls in front of a jury.

“Not a day has passed that I haven’t thought of both of you and thanked God for His protection,” said Volusia County Beach Patrol Sgt. Arthur Gendreau.

Last month, the Volusia County Council voted unanimously to begin the process of expanding beach driving in Daytona Beach. Sierra hopes safety is top of mind if any changes are made.

“We need to focus on it being safe for people that just want to have a nice, peaceful afternoon at the beach and not be worried about it,” said Sierra. “Going to the hospital for just lying down and tanning. We have to make sure that there are safety regulations for driving on the beach, whether it be lifeguards or regular civilians.”

She has not been back to Daytona Beach but hasn’t let it stop her from soaking up some sun in the sand at other beaches.

“I try to avoid, and I do avoid, the driving parts of the beach. I only go to beaches that have no, you know, there is no driving allowed. But of course lifeguards are still allowed to drive on the beach,” she said. “I always bring people with me. I’ve been careful. I don’t like to lie out with my eyes closed. I’m a little bit too scared to do that.”

Her facial injuries have healed with minimal scarring. Sierra says that although some trauma exists, she’s grateful to be moving forward.

22-year-old Florida man arrested after threatening mass shooting, impersonating law officials https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/22-year-old-florida-man-arrested-after-threatening-mass-shooting-impersonating-law-officials/ Thu, 01 May 2025 10:45:32 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1569385 PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. (WSVN) – Palm Beach County officials said a disaster was prevented after detectives arrested a man accused of threatening to commit multiple mass shootings.

“This is disturbing; this is a dangerous, dangerous individual,” said Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw.

22-year-old Damien Allen was apprehended by Palm Beach County detectives following an FBI guardian tip and search warrant that led investigators to find at least 12,000 rounds of ammunition, 18 real firearms, at least three PBSO-issued Class B uniforms, and several types of law enforcement credentials.

“This guy was ready to go, had all the equipment, and had the propensity to do it,” said Bradshaw.

He is currently being held at the Palm Beach County jail.

Sheriff Bradshaw says this is one of the most significant arrests he’s seen by his detectives.

“That has prevented people from dying, because I guarantee you he was going to do that,” he said. “There’s no doubt in my mind what he was going to do. It just depends on what day it was that triggered him.”

Now, officers are piecing together how he got ahold of all the equipment.

“There’s records of it somewhere,” said Captain Randy Foley of the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. “There’s nothing that you can’t buy now that’s not tracked some way, and we will track it down.”

PBSO Captain Foley said Allen has posted videos on social media in the officer uniforms, which have a gun belt, stun gun, radio, and fake body camera.

“To make it more realistic, he showed himself operating a vehicle that resembled a law enforcement car,” he said. “He added a police package, a laptop stand, and a police computer. It was operational.”

When going through his social media, deputies say they found Allen expressing a desire to attack seven locations, including a police station and churches, by using guerilla warfare tactics.

“His main desire was to harm law enforcement and attack a law enforcement facility,” said PBSO Capt. Foley.

Authorities said Allen had an online conversation with 15-year-old Natalie Rupnow, who died after carrying out a mass shooting at a school in Madison, Wisconsin, in December 2024.

At least 2 airlifted, 1 dead after boat hits ferry off Clearwater bridge and flees, police say https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/at-least-2-airlifted-1-dead-after-boat-hits-ferry-off-clearwater-bridge-and-flees-police-say/ Mon, 28 Apr 2025 03:42:20 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1568251 CLEARWATER, Fla. (WSVN) — Rescue crews have airlifted at least two people to the hospital after a boat hit a ferry with over three dozen people on board off the coast of Clearwater and took off, police said.

Clearwater Police, Clearwater Fire & Rescue, and U.S. Coast Guard units responded to the scene of the crash off the Memorial Causeway bridge Sunday night.

“We do have multiple calls received,” said a dispatcher. “This is a boat versus a ferry.”

Investigators said there were about 45 people on board the Clearwater Ferry, and several of them were hurt.

Police said the boat that struck the ferry fled the scene, and the ferry came to rest on a sandbar just south of the bridge.

“We were just enjoying the ride, and all of a sudden, we hear the first mate yelling, ‘Hey, hey, hey,’ and we look back behind us, and this big yacht just came through the boat,” said a witness.

“We can’t understand how fast they were going,” said another witness. “Like, how is that even logically possible that they were able to just get off like that?”

Fire officials have declared the incident a “mass casualty event” due to the number of injuries.

Six people were rushed to area hospitals as trauma alerts, two of whom were airlifted. Officials have since confirmed the death of at least one person.

The Coast Guard and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will be handling the investigation into the crash.

Florida woman speaks out after suffering wild raccoon attack in her backyard https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/florida-woman-speaks-out-after-suffering-wild-raccoon-attack-in-her-backyard/ Tue, 22 Apr 2025 12:58:27 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1566594 A woman is speaking out after, she said, a wild raccoon attacked her on her own property in Palm Beach Gardens.

Gayle Heinz said she felt a bite on her leg as soon as she opened her backyard door.

“And I step out like this, and all of a sudden I feel something on my leg biting me, and I look, and it’s this huge raccoon, and I scream, of course, and shake him off, and he runs off to the corner,” she said.

After being bitten, she said she quickly ran inside and doused her leg in peroxide. When her husband got home, they rushed to the emergency room. Her daughter then came to the home to wait for animal control.

“The raccoon had come out and come to the pool to get some water and then wandered to the end of the courtyard and spit up blood and keeled over and died,” Gayle said.

The raccoon’s body was then sent to the lab to get tested for rabies. To be safe, Gayle also opted to get vaccinated.

“It was definitely more unusual just because the animal died on its own right after the exposure,” said David Walesky of Palm Beach Animal Control. “You may see an animal acting very friendly. You may see an animal acting very aggressive. You may see an animal that is very vocal, making a lot of noises that are unexplainable.”

Fortunately, the animal tested negative for the deadly disease. Gayle says she’s relieved.

She believes the raccoon may have ingested rat poison. If not, she jokes that maybe she’s the problem.

“All of my friends were saying, ‘Oh my God, one bite of Gayle and he’s dead.'”

Experts remind everyone to keep wildlife away, ensure trash cans are secure, and ensure food is not left out in the open.

The video taken by the driver the moment the passenger started yelling shows the moments the trip took a violent turn.

Port St. Lucie Police said Amanda Montero is the passenger in the Uber who began swearing.

“You put me in your vehicle and talk to me like [expletive] the whole [expletive] way,” she said on camera.

Off camera, the driver said they pulled over and started to record the incident after Montero began questioning their race and gender.

“We got a 911 call from the Uber driver alleging that she had a drunk passenger and they were arguing over the fact that the passenger might have had an open alcoholic beverage, which is illegal to have in an Uber or any vehicle for that matter in the state of Florida,” said Port St. Lucie Police Department Sergeant Dominick Mesiti. “It started escalating. And at that point, our suspect struck the Uber driver’s hand that had the phone, committing a battery, which is a misdemeanor.”

Montero was arrested. Police say picking up strangers can come with the same risks as getting in the car with one.

“If you feel uncomfortable, stop,” said Sergeant Mesiti. “Call 911. If there’s something going on, if things escalated like in this incident, stop. Call 911. If you have to, take your keys and get out of your car. They may damage the car, but at least you’re going to be protected physically, safely.”

According to Uber, Montero has since been banned from the app, as her behavior is a violation of their community guidelines.

Boat brawl: Viral video of captain’s altercation with other boater in Punta Gorda jeopardizes captain’s charter company reputation https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/boat-brawl-viral-video-of-captains-altercation-with-other-boater-in-punta-gorda-jeopardizes-captains-charter-company-reputation/ Mon, 07 Apr 2025 14:24:52 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1562132 PUNTA GORDA, Fla. (WSVN) —A viral video is hurting business for a Florida charter company after a captain is seen getting confrontational with another boater. Now, a woman who booked a trip with the company is demanding her money back after seeing the video.

“When you look on social media, he did advertise as being the best tarpon fishing in the area,” said Smith.

Shalon Smith booked a 2-day fishing trip with Captain Brock Horner.

“I’m the best charter captain you will ever meet in your [explicit] life,” Horner can be hear yelling in the viral video.

But she wants her money back after seeing a viral video of him getting into a fight with another boater.

“We actually booked a few months ago for my son’s 16th birthday. Big deal for us,” said Smith. “My son’s buddy’s mom has family out in Florida and she sent me the link and she goes, ‘Is this the captain you’re going with? You may want to reconsider’.

It reportedly started over lights and speeding under a bridge in Punta Gorda.

“[…] cause he didn’t have his [explicit] lights on,” Horner yelled.

“Bro, you shouldn’t come flying through the middle of the bridge. You know people fish here, bro,” said Gage Towels.

Gage Towles took the video of his encounter with Captain Horner that would end with Horner eventually jumping on his boat.

“Chill bro, chill bro, please bro,” Towels can be heard pleading.

Smith said she paid $1,800 at booking and was set to pay Captain Horner another $1,800 the day of the trip, April 14.

But suddenly he was rather hard to reach.

“He wasn’t responding to calls, texts, emails, his website was shut down. His social media was shut down. I felt at a complete loss,” said Smith.

She eventually got in contact with Capt. Horner’s attorney to see if he could help get her money back.

“He said he is in contact, obviously, with his client. There’s a lot of “moving pieces”. So I don’t know what that means. But he did say if i don’t hear back to him in a week to contact him again,” she said.

Other boaters who know Captain Horner say the incident was completely uncalled for.

“It wasn’t worth losing his whole entire business now. And I mean, people want their money bac, they’re not getting it back,” said a man.

After the incident, surrounding businesses have cut ties with Horner. He was arrested by the Punta Gorda Police Department.

Margaritaville security guard goes viral after intercepting thrown rock from midair https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/margaritaville-security-guard-goes-viral-after-intercepting-thrown-rock-from-midair/ Fri, 04 Apr 2025 16:51:19 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1561529 FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) — On only his second day on the job, a Margaritaville security guard ended a rocky riff between guests with his quick reflexes.

A viral video from June showcases the moments a scuffle between guests escalated when one woman grabbed and hurled a rock toward another.

However, before the rock managed to hit anyone, Christopher Owens, the security guard, snagged it from midair.

“She decides to grab a rock. I don’t know her intentions. She threw it into a group of people, and I just happened to catch the rock. It hit my hand, and I looked at my hand, and I was like, ‘Did I just catch that?'” Christopher said. “I was like, ‘Is this the kind of stuff that happens on the beach?'”

Owens has been in security for over a decade.

The video, gaining over 1,000,000 views in less than 24 hours, kick-started Owens’ rise to local fame, and suddenly, he became the person with whom everyone wanted to take a selfie.

“He’s, like, famous for catching the rock!” one guest said.

Although it was Owens’ second day on the job, he’s been in security for over a decade.

Margaritaville Beach Resort Fort Myers Beach honored him with a commemorative pin, a small token for a big catch.

As for what actually happened, Owens said it started with a push, then escalated to the infamous rock toss.

Lee County Sheriff’s Office deputies said no charges were filed.

No one was hurt, thanks to Owens’ quick reflexes.

“So are you a superhero in disguise?” asked one man.

“No superhero gene here. You know, I’m a big Mets fan,” Owens said. “A lot of watching Francisco Lindor at shortstop.”

Owens said there haven’t been any more cases like that for the last eight months, and he hopes it stays that way.

Bodycam, surveillance video shows JSO officer coming under fire; suspect dead in shootout, officer shot in foot https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/bodycam-surveillance-video-shows-jso-officer-coming-under-fire-suspect-dead-in-shootout-officer-shot-in-foot/ Mon, 31 Mar 2025 21:40:28 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1560320 JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (WSVN) — Body camera and surveillance video captured the chilling moments when a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office officer encountered danger on duty.

After a short pursuit in a Northwest Jacksonville neighborhood, home surveillance video shows a driver pulling into a driveway near Trout River Boulevard and Ribault Avenue, at around 9 a.m. on March 12.

JSO Officer’s A.C. Gaulding’s bodycam video shows him pulling up behind the suspect, identified as 33-year-old Brandon White.

“Stay in the car,” Gaulding is heard saying in the bodycam video.

Almost immediately, White opened fire.

Gaulding ran for cover behind a fence, returned fire several times and radioed for help.

“I’m hit in my foot,” he is heard saying in the bodycam video.

Gaulding limped, leaving blood drops on the street as he waited for backup to arrive and move in on the suspect.

“Traffic 66, his vehicle is stopped behind mine. or in front of mine,” the officer is heard saying in the bodycam video.

As officers arrived at the driveway, a person came out of the house and waved for police to come over because White was already incapacitated.

A picture shows the bulletproof vest officers removed from the suspect to give him first aid. He died at the hospital.

Gaulding walked out of University of Florida Health in crutches the day after the shooting. His lower left leg and foot were in a cast.

The State Attorney’s Office for the Fourth Judicial Circuit is currently reviewing the case.

Tampa woman escapes truck fire; looks for Good Samaritan https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/tampa-woman-escapes-truck-fire-looks-for-good-samaritan/ Fri, 28 Mar 2025 14:13:38 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1558955 Officials say a woman in Tampa barely escaped a fire emergency with her life thanks to a good Samaritan’s efforts.

Deborah Paxton said she was driving her boyfriend to work near Saint Petersburg on Wednesday, unaware her the back of her truck was up in flames.

Then, a biker started waving and screaming at her, trying to get her attention.

“‘Your car is on fire!’ And kept pointing up,” Deborah said. “I look up and there’s black smoke and flames shooting up.”

She pulled over and bailed out of her truck with her boyfriend and her dog, Willow.

“That smoke started coming into the cab, the windows were cracking, and within seconds,” she said.

According to first responders, if they didn’t get out when they did, they might not have made it.

“We wouldn’t have made it out in time,” she said. “I was scared it was going to blow up.”

Paxton took to Facebook to try and find the good Samaritan who flagged her town.

“I can’t even express how thankful I am for this guy because I couldn’t be sitting here today if it weren’t for him getting our attention,” she said. “So if you are out there, from the bottom of our hearts and my dog’s, we thank you.”

Her post has already received a lot of traction. Some in the community believe they know who the man is, and Deborah says she would like to meet him in person.

“I’d give him a big hug,” she said.

No official word was given as to what caused the truck to burst into flames. Paxton believes someone flicked a cigarette out the window, catching fire to the boxes and carpet she was hauling.

Florida middle school teacher under investigation after footage shows her choking student https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/florida-middle-school-teacher-under-investigation-after-footage-shows-her-choking-student/ Thu, 20 Mar 2025 16:25:52 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1556787 EUSTIS, Fla. (WSVN) — A Florida teacher has been relocated pending investigation following accusations of her choking a middle school student.

12-year-old Ky’lin Williams says he got into trouble one afternoon at school after he and a couple of friends were tossing ketchup packets around the cafeteria.

A school employee, noticing them, walked over, saying Ky’lin was going to be written up.

“I was, like, shocked because I didn’t do anything,” he said.

Ky’lin called his mother to tell her; however, at Eustis Middle School, students are not allowed to use their phones during active hours. Due to this, administrators began to try and confiscate the phone.

It was then when one of the faculty members allegedly began to choke the student.

“I hear him screaming, ‘Mommy, Mommy, Mommy! Help me! She’s choking me!'” said Ashley Griffin, Ky’lin’s mother. “He was choked. He was battered.”

“She grabbed my neck,” he said. “So when I get scared, like when I get scared, it’s hard for me to breathe.”

According to the police report, the administrator’s left arm “inadvertently contacted Ky’lin’s hoodie collar near his neck area. She immediately disengages.”

Ky’lin’s mother, however, does not see it that way.

“Overall I’m just disgusted,” she said. “I put my trust in them to take care of my child.”

She wanted to press charges; however, Florida’s statute on battery just says someone intentionally touched or struck another person against their will. Police, however, chose not to file, saying they did not believe the administrator had any intent to batter Ky’lin.

Now, Ky’lin says he’s nervous to go back to school too.

“Like scared and upset at the same time,” he said. “I’m worried I might run to her.”

According to the school district, the administrator has been moved to another location where there will be no student interaction pending the investigation.

Boater rescued by deputies, good Samaritan after falling overboard https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/boater-rescued-by-deputies-good-samaritan-after-falling-overboard/ Wed, 19 Mar 2025 16:11:15 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1556424 Deputies in North Florida rescued a boater who fell overboard with the help of a good Samaritan.

The quick thinking hero was only minutes away when he received a call from a fisherman, telling him that his friend was fighting for his life. He had fallen during a fishing trip in Saint Mary Lake last Thursday, near the Florida-Georgia border.

“There’s a gentleman in the water right off Fort Clinch,” said the caller. “One guy can’t get him back up on the boat. They are struggling really hard. He’s hanging on by an anchor line.”

Video shows the man, identified as Mr. Seymour, falling overboard while attempting to raise his anchor.

Another man, who was on the boat with the victim, called for help, but local authorities were surprisingly not his first call.

“I got a call from my buddy saying his fishing partner fell overboard, trying to pull the anchor,” said Hunter Howell, the good Samaritan who rushed in to help.

He was only minutes away when he received a call from the fisherman. Video shows the moment he reached his friend’s boat.

“When I got there, all I saw was Mr. Seymour hanging on to the boat like this to the boat anchor,” he said. “When I tried to grab him and felt how cold he was, I kind of feared the worst.”

According to him, Mr. Seymour, who is in his 70s, couldn’t loosen his grip o the rope. He said his hands and body were cold after being the 64 degree water or nearly an hour.

“I pried his hands loose, and that’s when Nassau County got his boat in close enough for me to transfer him over,” Howell said.

He had on a life jacket and was brought back onto his boat with the help of a deputy.

Authorities say Seymour showed signs of severe exhaustion and hypothermia, however he is okay.

Howell says he is sure that they’ll be back on the water fishing together again soon.

Massachusetts woman injured when power tool battery smashes through her windshield as family drove to Disney https://wsvn.com/news/us-world/massachusetts-woman-injured-when-power-tool-battery-smashes-through-her-windshield-as-family-drove-to-disney/ Wed, 26 Feb 2025 23:16:00 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1550067 A Massachusetts driver is lucky to be alive after a sudden impact while heading to Walt Disney World, and now she is sharing the heart-stopping moments when a road hazard smashed through her windshield, sending her to the hospital.

A power tool battery caused a giant hole through the windshield id Chynna Higgins’ SUV last week.

The victim said she was behind the wheel of the vehicle when the battery hurtkled toward her, causing a serious head injury.

“It was probably the scariest thing I’ve ever been through,” she said.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident happened on the Florida Turnpike outside Orlando.

Higgins, who was driving from Massachusetts, said she was coming up on the last hour of her family road trip to Disney with her children and their father in tow.

“I just heard the bang, but it hadn’t registered that it, like, hit me yet, you know? And I looked at my kids’ father, and I grabbed him, and I caught, like, my eye out of, like, the rearview mirror and saw that I was just bleeding everywhere,” she said.

FHP said the cordless power tool battery struck her right above her left eye before it fell into her lap.

“This was like a brick coming through right at you as you’re driving,” a reporter told Higgins.

“Yeah, and I think what saved my life is, it hit my dashboard first, and then it hit my face,” said Higgins.

Higgins was able to quickly pull over and call for help. An ambulance took her and her family to a nearby hospital, where she had to get several stitches to her forehead.

“I’m beyond blessed. Like, I can still see, I didn’t break any bones,” she said. “You know, the stitches suck, but I can deal with some stitches.”

While the family spent several hours in the emengecy room to start their vacation, Higgins pushed through the pain to make sure her children still enjoyed their long-awaited trip to Disney.

“Seeing their faces, like, smile and light up when they got to see Mickey Mouse in person probably made all of that worth it,” she said. “I mean, I wish we could have gone without getting hit in the head. That would have been great.”

Higgins said she has no idea where that battery came from.

Family of Palm Beach County nurse demands answers after Baker Act patient leaves her hospitalized https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/family-of-palm-beach-county-nurse-demands-answers-after-baker-act-patient-leaves-her-hospitalized/ Tue, 25 Feb 2025 11:46:55 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1549393 LOXAHATCHEE, Fla. (WSVN) — A South Florida nurse is at risk of losing both eyes after being brutally attacked by a psychiatric patient on the job at HCA Palm West Hospital. Now, her family is speaking out, demanding to know why there wasn’t security on the job.

Cindy Joseph and her brother, Chris Lal, say the incident that led to their mother’s hospitalization has completely changed their world.

“I was angry, to be honest, that someone could let this happen to her,” she said.

Leela Lal worked as a nurse for 21 years at HCA Palms West Hospital. Last Tuesday, she was beaten nearly to death by 33-year-old Stephen Scantlebury in a third-floor room.

“Somebody attacked a nurse. Palms West Hospital!” said a caller.

“Okay. Okay. Where in the hospital?” said a 911 dispatcher.

“Oh my god…”

Scantlebury escaped the facility but was quickly arrested running down the streets.

Lal was airlifted to a nearby hospital with almost every bone in her face broken.

“It’s rough seeing your mom, the person who took care of you for your entire life, and seeing her in that state where you can’t really do anything,” Chris said.

The siblings are outraged the hospital even admitted Scantlebury, a psychiatric patient under a Baker Act hold, as the hospital is not a Baker Act receiving facility.

“Did he hurt somebody with the scissors?” asked a dispatcher.

“Yes,” said the caller.

“He stabbed a nurse?”

“Yes.”

“Okay,” said the dispatcher. “Where is the injured nurse?”

“The nurse is in the floor,” said the caller.

“The nurse is on the floor? Is she breathing?”

“Yes.”

A recording of a call during the attack between a 911 operator and what appears to be the CEO of Palm West sparked controversy.

“We had a Baker Act beat a staff member unconscious now running around the building,” said the alleged CEO.

“You said they assaulted the employee until they passed out?” asked the dispatcher.

“Yeah, unconscious,” he said. “I’m not worried about that part. I need the Baker Act dealt with.”

“She gave everything to that hospital, and to hear this, whoever it was on the recording say that they didn’t care about her,” said Cindy. “That hit me in a way I can’t describe.”

Scantelbury is charged with attempted murder with a hate crimes enhancement.

Doctors say Lal is now awake.

The attack sparked support and condemnation, with nurses calling for more protection in hospitals.

Collier County resident steps in to help alligator with football stuck in its mouth https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/collier-county-resident-steps-in-to-help-alligator-with-football-stuck-in-its-mouth/ Thu, 20 Feb 2025 15:10:33 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1547791 COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. (WSVN) — One Collier County resident took a big risk to save an alligator who had a football stuck inside its mouth for hours.

Rick Green said he came up with a little plan Wednesday night to step in and save the gator from choking after seeing the alligator on his local Facebook page.

“I saw on our local Facebook page here for Ave Maria that someone had made a post about the alligator with the football stuck in his mouth,” Rick said. “So I came over here, and I thought, perhaps I might have a little plan.”

Cameras couldn’t catch a good glimpse of the gator at night, so Rick volunteered to check on it.

“If I could get close enough to it, I might be able to pop the football with a knife, deflate it so the gator could then just spit it out. Move on,” he said. “But I tried to get close to him, and he just wouldn’t let me anywhere close to him. So I told the wife about the plan, and she hated it.”

He rounded the corner with his flashlight, but then he reached down by the shore of the lake.

“Did he just grab something?”

“I’m thrilled! See all the bites on it.”

While his initial plan may not have worked, he managed to successfully get the football from the gator’s mouth.

“Right before you came, I saw, and he had it in his mouth.”

Before Rick freed the gator from the football, Florida Fish and Wildlife were contacted about the animal. The football is now in Rick’s possession.

Video shows crash that sent SUV into Houston home after striking utility pole; homeowner speaks out https://wsvn.com/news/us-world/video-shows-crash-that-sent-suv-into-houston-home-after-striking-utility-pole-homeowner-speaks-out/ Tue, 12 Nov 2024 22:00:51 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1505011 HOUSTON (WSVN) — A Texas homeowner said she got the startle of a lifetime when a crash that was caught on a door camera sent an SUV barreling into her house.

At around 9 a.m. on a Sunday morning, Eloisa Cavanauth is used to peace and quiet.

“Well, I was in the kitchen fixing my so-called breakfast,” she said.

Instead, a red SUV took flight after flight after crashing into a utility pole, ultimately flipping over onto her yard.

Cavanauth said the impact felt as if her house, located on Palmsprings Drive in a neighborhood east of the Gulf Freeway in Houston, was lifted off the ground.

“My kitchen, where you go out the door, was on fire, and it was a car burning,” she said, “but I didn’t know that. I thought a bomb had blown.”

Cavanauth said the driver got out of the car on his own. He was coherent, but she recalled seeing blood coming from his head.

“I don’t know his condition. All I know is they rushed him to the hospital, but he was talking,” she said,

Which is surprising, given the state of the man’s car. His fender was wrapped up in the fence he catapulted over.

As of Tuesday, Houston Police have not specified whether the motorist was under the influence or whether he’ll face any charges.

“You know, I’m just glad nothing happened to me, ’cause I am here by myself. You know, it could’ve been worse, it could’ve been worse,” said Cavanauth, “I just hope they take care of the mess they made, ’cause from what I could see, it was a pretty bad wreck, it was just awful.”

Thankfully, material things can be replaced, and homes can be fixed. Life, Cavanauth said, is irreplaceable.

“Yeah, I am still in shock, but it’ll be OK,” she said,

Neighbors say speeding is an issue in that area.

Florida man faces charges following low-speed chase in Flagler County https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/florida-man-faces-charges-following-low-speed-chase-in-flagler-county/ Thu, 03 Oct 2024 23:20:58 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1491059 FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. (WSVN) — A slow chase in the rain near Daytona Beach left deputies stunned, calling it “possibly the slowest chase in the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office history.”

The suspect moved at a snail’s pace during the pursuit in Flagler County. Some troopers even said he was moving in the single digits.

“Yeah, we’re doing about 130 [mph], and he’s pulling away from us, coming up over the bridge,” said a trooper. “Talking about a mile an hour.”

“This has got to be one of the slowest ones I’ve seen in my career,” said Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly. “About 1 to 2, maybe 3 miles an hour.”

The incident started when a person was kicked out of the car they were driving on Sept. 25.

Deputies said 33-year-old Kyle McNary kicked the victim out when they pulled over to swap places in the car. Then McNary allegedly hit another car and drove off, while leaving the victim on the side of the road.

“The path of vehicles doing circles now through the intersections,” said a trooper. “We went southbound to go back northbound, it appears.”

Deputies soon responded and gave chase, although they didn’t have to go very fast to catch up as, according to the victim, McNary refused to drive faster than 15 to 20 miles per hour.

In a bizarre attempt to flee from police, McNary continued the low-speed chase, refusing to pull over even as deputies caught up to him.

“We do appreciate that he wasn’t driving recklessly while he was trying to avoid [us]. Deputies used stop sticks on him to flatten the tire,” said Staly.

Eventually, McNary pulled over and was arrested.

“Hands up, Kyle; keep your hands up, bud,” a deputy is heard saying in body camera video.

McNary faces multiple charges, including fleeing from police and leaving the scene of a crash.

Parents thankful good Samaritans helped 5-year-old son with rare heart condition after passing out on Epcot ride https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/parents-thankful-good-samaritans-helped-5-year-old-son-with-rare-heart-condition-after-passing-out-on-epcot-ride/ Wed, 02 Oct 2024 16:44:24 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1490544 There was a scare at a Disney park when a little boy passed out on a ride. Luckily for the boy, some good Samaritans performed a lifesaving act.

Ernesto Tagle Jr. and Christine Tagle already knew their 5-year-old son, Ernesto, was special.

“Full of life and full of energy, always, since he was in the womb,” Christine said.

Doctors confirmed it as well after they recently diagnosed him with a rare heart condition known as CVCT.

“When the heart is like beating too much, like he’ll go into an arrhythmia,” she said.

The family had no clue until they went on recent trip to Disney, where little Ernesto passed out mere seconds into the “Guardians of the Galaxy” roller coaster ride at Epcot.

“He’d ridden the ride before, so I really didn’t understand what was going on,” she said. “We had to complete the ride, like there’s no way to stop it or get off of it.”

Christine said that by then, she could barely make out a pulse.

“I was screaming,” she said. “He was sitting in front of me. I know that I was hitting him and just saying, ‘Something’s wrong, something’s wrong.'”

Christine said she started CPR after the ride.

A couple that passed by, who happened to be a nurse and an emergency medical technician, jumped in to help because Ernesto started having seizures.

A Disney employee grabbed an AED machine to shock his heart in order to get it beating again before he was taken to the hospital.

“We’re just glad everything worked the way it did, worked out the way it did,” the elder Ernesto said, “and we can’t thank the people that helped us enough.”

Little Ernesto has since had surgery to get a defibrillator, and thankfully, there was no neurological damage.

He used to play baseball, run and swim, but life is slower for now.

“Maybe 30 minutes from the hospital, he was like, ‘Can I go outside and play and ride my motorcycle?'” Ernesto said.

“Yeah, no,” Christine said.

His mom and dad said they are thankful that so many people were in the right place to help.

“Everyone knows his smile, and everybody knows his, like, just little full of life, and we just feel so lucky that this didn’t rob us of that,” Christine said.

The family was able to track down those who jumped in to help their son to thank them.

FWC trappers capture 3-legged gator in Fort Myers community https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/fwc-trappers-capture-3-legged-gator-in-fort-myers-community/ Fri, 23 Aug 2024 19:27:45 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1476643 FORT MYERS, Fla. (WSVN) — A three-legged alligator was evicted from a Southwest Florida community. The reptile roundup happened near a school in Fort Myers.

It was “see ya later, alligator,” for the Fort Myers neighborhood after the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission removed the scaly scare, Thursday afternoon.

The gator was found in a creek across from a Fort Myers high school.

While the gator had only three legs and one eye, it put up a good fight.

“His jaws are big,” said Dave Douglas, who saw the gator being caught. “His head was, you know, the top of his head is that wide, and the thing is behind his neck, so now they could pull him, and he started doing the barrel roll like.”

A resident said FWC trappers quickly wrangled the gator up before it could wrangle someone else.

“There’s a lot of little children in this neighborhood, especially a lot of younger boys that come down here fishing all the time,” Ann Shefferly said.

Shefferly, who lives down the road with her young kids, said seeing the massive gator near where they play was a shock.

“Very scary. I mean, we live right across the street, and I never let them come down here by themselves, for good reason,” Shefferly said.

There are signs in the area that say no fishing or swimming, but residents said that doesn’t stop children from coming to play nearby.

Arrest made in connection with 4-year-old girl accidentally shot; victim remains in critical condition https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/arrest-made-in-connection-with-4-year-old-girl-accidentally-shot-victim-remains-in-critical-condition/ Mon, 06 Nov 2023 03:14:28 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1378195 Rescue crews rushed a 4-year-old girl to the hospital after, police said, a sibling grabbed a gun and opened fire in what investigators are calling an accidental shooting. The story has taken a new turn as police have made an arrest in connection with the incident.

According to the Miami-Dade Police Department, 25-year-old Quavanta Ennels, a convicted felon, was in possession of the firearm involved in this incident and has been charged accordingly.

“Sir you were arrested for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon,” said Judge Mindy Glazer.

On Monday, Ennels found out he could be facing more charges following a court hearing.

“Additionally, there may be charges forthcoming for palpable negligence by leaving a firearm within easy access of a minor,” said the prosecutor.

Ennels’ bond was set at $15,000, and when he bonds out, he will be on house arrest.

“He’s upset about a house arrest, in the meantime, there’s a little girl in the hospital who had terrible injuries because he left a fire arm unsecured,” Glazer said.

Officials said an adult was inside the home at the time of the incident off Northwest 21st Avenue in Northwest Miami-Dade, Sunday afternoon. Also inside the residence, detectives said, were the female victim and three other children between the ages of 2 and 6.

“Several people inside of the location screaming,” a dispatcher said in radio transmissions.

Police said a sibling picked up the firearm, which was unsecured in Ennels book bag, police said, and it went off in the direction of the victim, striking her.

“We got a pediatric trauma alert,” a first responder said in radio transmissions.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews rushed the young patient to Ryder Trauma Center, where she remains in critical condition, Monday morning.

“We have a small, 4-year-old child now who will not be going to school tomorrow, who will not be enjoying the things that a 4-year-old should be enjoying, because of the negligent firearm ownership,” said MDPD Detective Andre Martin. “We need to take this matter seriously.”

“A bullet flies at a very, very fast rate of speed, and you may think you can get to this firearm in time, and obviously, in situations like this, you cannot,” said Martin.

The incident, Martin said, comes after a similar incident at an apartment complex in Southwest Miami-Dade involving an unattended gun, back on Sept. 24.

“This is another situation like the situation we had not too long ago within our community where, again, a firearm was left unattended, and a young person was hurt,” he said.

In Sunday’s case, detectives said, the gun was within reach.

“The firearm was being stored in this situation in a manner in which it was accessible to the children, which is how this occurred,” said Martin. “The responsibility of owning a firearm is a great one. It is a constitutional right, but the responsible ownership of that firearm is of greater importance.”

Now, due to the negligent ownership of a firearm, another child is fighting for her life.

The Miami-Dade Police Department is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident.

Although Ennels was only charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, it is likely, prosecutors said, he will face additional charges.

Pilot rescued hours after Everglades plane crash https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/pilot-rescued-hours-after-everglades-plane-crash/ Tue, 31 Oct 2023 14:38:06 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1376555 SOUTHWEST BROWARD, Fla. (WSVN) — A pilot was rescued hours after crashing his plane in the Everglades.

Authorities responded to the scene of the crash just after 10 a.m. in the area of Mack’s Fish Camp, located at 18599 Krome Avenue, Tuesday morning.

According to Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue officials, upon arrival, units discovered the pilot, an adult male, sitting on the wing of the downed aircraft suffering from a leg injury.

The aircraft, a Cessna Skyhawk, is believed to be based out of a flight school in Miami-Dade County, officials said.

Around 10:30 a.m., a video from 7Skyforce showed the man sitting on the partially submerged plane in an isolated area of the Everglades.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded, performed a hoist operation, and safely extracted the man from the aircraft. He has since been transported to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the plane crashed around 2:20 a.m.; only the pilot was on board.

“Well he’s out there since 4 a.m., so it’s alligators and mosquito and everything else that’s out there,” said MDFR Capt. Andy Borges.

Borges was the first responder who dropped down from the chopper to rescue the pilot.

“Didn’t have water, so I’m sure he was thirsty, a little dehydrated and being out there, so very happy to see us,” Borges said.

The Cessna Skyhawk left Okeechobee Airport sometime overnight, flew south and crashed off West Broward County.

Mack’s Fish Camp was the only thing that was remotely close by as one of the guides was with customers when the search for the pilot began. They were unable to get close to the pilot, and the only way to get to him was to drop from above.

“I realized I was not going to be able to make it to the physical crash site of the airplane itself, there was a large Levy,” Marshall Jones said.

7News spoke with the owner of the plane, which is from a flight school out of the Homestead area, and he said the pilot is expected to be OK.

The National Transportation Safety Board is now in charge of the investigation.

Knaus Berry Farm’s sweet return in time for the holiday season https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/knaus-berry-farms-sweet-return-in-time-for-the-holiday-season/ Tue, 31 Oct 2023 13:30:46 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1376491 A cherished South Florida tradition is back in action for the holiday season, as Knaus Berry Farm reopens its doors at 8 a.m. Tuesday. The excitement is palpable as locals have been braving overnight lines to savor the delectable treats crafted at this iconic establishment.

The very first person in line claimed her spot at noon on Monday, embodying the dedication that surrounds this annual event. In the bakery, workers prepared to unveil a South Florida staple, renowned for its warm and sticky cinnamon rolls.

Chrischelli Polles, who has been eagerly waiting in line since Monday, expressed, “It’s all worth it – it’s a family tradition. I’ve been doing this since I was 12 years old.”

At 8 a.m., Knaus Berry Farm officially opened its doors to the community. People walked away with boxes of South Florida’s favorite cinnamon rolls.

“I’ve been doing it for the last five years and on the first day, it’s worth it,” said Yoan Sanchez, who walked out with several boxes of sweet treats.

“Delicious! Worth the wait,” said Polles as she took a bite of her delectable dessert.

Of course, the wait doesn’t seem to be a problem for dozens of people in line on Halloween morning.

As patrons eagerly anticipate the reopening of South Florida’s gem, they remain supportive of the Knaus family’s determination to continue the legacy initiated by their parents many years ago. The tradition endures, providing comfort and joy to Homestead families.

The line continues to grow throughout the morning, a reminder for all who might visit the farm: the bakery only accepts cash and they are open until 5 p.m.

Hialeah councilman files lawsuit against mayor over 911 system negligence https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/hialeah-councilman-files-lawsuit-against-mayor-over-911-system-negligence/ Wed, 25 Oct 2023 10:42:07 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1374494 A councilman is taking legal action against the mayor of Hialeah, alleging negligence in the city’s emergency response system.

Councilman Bryan Calvo’s lawsuit follows revelations that the city’s 911 system missed over 32,000 calls in the past two years, leaving callers in distress without assistance.

On Wednesday, Calvo conducted a news conference where he discussed legal action against Mayor Esteban Bovo.

“The actions taken, unfortunately by Mayor Steve Bovo, undermine the authority that I have as a council member and the authority granted to other council members under the City Charter and the Code of Ordinances,” said Calvo. “What I’m asking for, really, in this lawsuit is, let’s not set a precedent that elected officials are going to be charged for doing their job. What I’m really asking for is, let me do my job without charging me.”

Download

In June, Councilman Calvo called for an investigation into the operations of Hialeah’s 911 call center.

“I think what’s irresponsible is to try and sweep this under the rug and pretend that it doesn’t exist,” Calvo stated at the press conference in June. “Clearly, something is going on in that department, and we need to get to the bottom of it and we need to find solutions for it.”

Despite his calls for transparency, no action was taken to address the issue, prompting him to take legal action against the city’s mayor, Wednesday.

“[On October 3], I received a communication from the city clerk saying that I was going to be charged approximately $7,000 in records for the records that I was requesting,” stated Calvo in Wednesday’s news conference. “Never in the history of Hialeah has an elected official been charged, or has been forced to pay, to receive public documents. It’s never happened.”

Over the past several months, Councilman Calvo has cited multiple sources, including a March 2022 report that he claims was commissioned by the mayor.

“This report showed, and I quote, ‘that the city’s 911 system is woefully understaffed,'” said Calvo in June’s press conference.

In March of this year, a call center worker brought his concerns to the council.

“We’re severely understaffed, and the future outlook for our division is poor if drastic changes are not made,” said the worker.

Citizen complaints were also reported by El Nuevo Herald, specifically, when an off-duty firefighter dialed 911 after an auto accident.

“He called and no one answered,” stated Calvo, referencing the aforementioned incident.

Calvo also mentioned that no one answered when a woman called after her husband fell from the roof.

In August, Mayor Bovo addressed the issue in a news conference.

“There are no missed calls; there are calls that go into our system and are somehow another loss due to somebody hanging up,” said the mayor. “Like I said, a misdial. If it does ring once or twice and somebody hangs up, it could be a nervous caller. And then they’re being called back.”

Calvo’s determination to uncover the truth stems from a commitment to the residents of Hialeah.

“We need an investigation. The residents of Hialeah deserve transparency,” he said.

Mayor Bovo has been reached out for comment on this lawsuit.

2 accused of robbing postal worker in Miami Beach arrested in St. Lucie County https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/2-accused-of-robbing-postal-worker-in-miami-beach-arrested-in-st-lucie-county/ Tue, 24 Oct 2023 04:02:22 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1374098 Suspects inside a vehicle were wanted for a crime after a hot pursuit took place through the streets of Port St. Lucie. The men are accused of robbing a mail carrier on Miami Beach.

The cross-county getaway would end with both of the suspects getting caught and cuffed.

“They’re doing a felony stop right now,” said an officer. “Driver’s out of the vehicle.”

Police chopper footage captured the take-down of the suspected Miami Beach crooks in St. Lucie County.

“One in custody,” an officer.

The two were arrested Sunday after their vehicle was identified as the one officers were looking for, which was connected to a strong-arm robbery of a postal worker in Miami Beach on Saturday.

7News was told that the pair struck there.

According to sources with knowledge of the investigation, they told 7News that the initial crime happened near Drexel and 16th Street, close to the Lincoln Road Mall. A postwoman was said to be the victim when she was robbed of her master key.

Recently, thieves across the country have been after arrow keys, which open mail and collections boxes. Several arrests have been made this year for thefts of arrow keys statewide.

In St. Lucie County on Sunday, the latest problem was solved after one of the suspect’s bailed out of the passenger side of the vehicle, but was eventually caught by officers.

“He’s on foot, right there,” said an officer.

“I got him, I got him,” said another officer.

But his alleged partner took a little more effort to capture.

The suspect eventually got down and was arrested after officers were in front of a home with their guns drawn, aided by those inside a chopper that was high above.

Jalen Dennis Elliot and Bernard J. Davis, both 19, were charged with fleeing and eluding police. They are in jail on on a federal hold for the alleged arrow key caper.

The Miami division of the U.S Postal Inspection Service told 7News Monday night, “We are actively working this investigation jointly with the St. Lucie County SO, Miami Beach PD and the U.S Attorney’s Office.”

Port St. Lucie Police and the Florida Highway Patrol were also involved in this case. The pair are expected to face federal charges as well.

Antisemitic graffiti found scrawled in gated Cooper City neighborhood, prompting increase in security https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/antisemitic-graffiti-found-scrawled-in-gated-cooper-city-neighborhood-prompting-increase-in-security/ Mon, 23 Oct 2023 02:17:54 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1373748 Residents of a Cooper City neighborhood said they were disturbed to find messages of hate in their community, and now they want to know who’s behind them.

The antisemitic messages were initially discovered in the gated community of Monterra on Saturday morning.

“Two writings on the cement walkway, as well as one on a bench,” said Avi Fishman, president of the neighborhood’s homeowners association. “We’re not used to this. This is a beautiful community, great neighbors, good people and this was truly a shock to all of us.”

Fishman shared several pictures of the disturbing graffiti with 7News on Sunday.

“Homeowners are very concerned about this. Not only Jewish homeowners, but all homeowners,” he said. “People are truly outraged that this happened.”

One of the messages reads, “I am Muslim, and say: kill all Jews.” Another reads, “By Allah, free Gaza, kill all Jews.”

The three messages were written at a time when tensions are high, as war rages on in the Middle East between Israel and Hamas.

“We immediately notified the authorities,” said Fishman. “As a community, we’ve also hired additional resources to reassure our homeowners that they will be safe.”

At this point, it’s unclear who wrote the graffiti, and the hateful words have been removed.

“It’s very unfortunate that our kids do have to walk around with more safety, you know it’s 2023. Kids have to come to our Hebrew schools or synagogues and see an armed guard and it’s really sad,” said Rabbi Adi Goodman, who also had a message for whoever did this heinous act.

“I would be more than glad to come and sit and have a talk with you,” he said. “[To] show you and ask you, what is it that’s really bothering you, that you feel the need to write such hatred in such a beautiful community.”

“Jews around the world are being attacked,” said Maor Elbaz Starinsky, consul general of Israel to Miami. “We have to go through this as a community, not only as Jewish community, not only as Jewish people, as a community to fight, to fight Hamas, to fight the terrorists, to fight the antisemites.

Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis condemned the hateful act.

“What’s frustrating for me as a mayor is that a lot of the events that are occurring in my community are a result of things that have happening somewhere else in the world,” he said. “I cannot control what’s happening in the Middle East, yet the impact is being felt her locally.”

To combat the hate, the City of Fort Lauderdale will host a mayor’s summit against antisemitism.

“It’s about conversation, it’s about trying to appreciate one another and listen and see how we can move this community forward,” Trantalis said.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office is investigating this incident.

The graffiti has also been reported to the Anti-Defamation League. On Monday, they released a statement, which reads as follows, “We are appalled at this hateful vandalism at a park in the Monterra Community District. In this heightened atmosphere, messages like this instill fear and intimidation. We thank Monterra community leaders and Broward Sheriff’s Office for quickly addressing this incident. We ask anyone who experiences or witnesses an antisemitic or bias-motivated incident to report it to law enforcement when appropriate and to ADL at https://adl.org/report.”

A spokesperson for the Council on American-Islamic Relations called these notes “extremely disturbing and intolerable,” adding they hope that whoever is responsible gets caught.

If you have any information on these acts of vandalism or the subject’s whereabouts, call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.

Americans evacuate Israel by sea amidst ongoing war with Gaza https://wsvn.com/news/us-world/israel-evacuees/ Tue, 17 Oct 2023 03:50:49 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1371947 In the midst of the ongoing conflict in Israel, American citizens are taking desperate measures to ensure their safety and that of their loved ones. Rockets, fear, and uncertainty have gripped their lives, prompting an urgent quest for escape.

“We’re leaving because ah it’s unsafe here, we’ve had rockets a few times in my city in Rosh Haayin,” said Aydela, an American woman living in Israel. “And I have two kids and it’s very scary to wake them up in the middle of the night, running to the shelter room.”

The Royal Caribbean cruise ship, “Rhapsody of the Seas,” has become an unexpected savior for those stranded in Israel after commercial airlines grounded their flights.

“Our flights were all canceled we found out, within a day or two we realized we didn’t have a flight,” Debby Smith, a U.S. tourist from Arizona. So we were waiting to see what would happen. And we felt pretty safe where we were.”

Commercial airlines left grounded amid the ongoing war.

“We are so thankful to be home, so thankful,” Ron Neumann, another evacuee.

Neumann and his wife Linda, expressed how thankful they are for a chartered plane led by Project Dynamo, that pulled them from Israel and landed in Tampa on Sunday.

“To be there is totally different than watching it,” said Linda. “People think it is just a movie, no it is real.”

The group rescued dozens of children and pets with help from the state of Florida.

“This was a three-ring circus for sure,” Bryan Stern, founder and CEO of Project Dynamo. “We had 270 people dispersed in over a dozen different areas of Israel and we had to move them safely and securely.”

For some, the only way out was by water.

The bloodshed caused a U.S. tourist from California to try and leave, but her heart she said, remained broken for those who couldn’t escape.

“We would love to come back and finish what we didn’t get to see,” Sandra Diez. “And I feel so much for the people. Excuse me … it makes me tear up. So much they’re going through, but we’re with them. We pray for them every day.”

Some Israeli-Americans said they feel they should stay in Israel.

“I don’t agree with this trip,” said Emuna, a passenger. “I came along because I want to be with my family, but I think we should stay in Israel with our nation and with our family and I think we have to show support. And if everybody picked up and left, not everybody would come back.”

The people on the cruise will be dropped off in Cyprus, an island in the Mediterranean, about 150 miles away from Israel.

Newly released surveillance video shows ex-condo president charged with arson attempting to set truck on fire, vandalizing vehicles in South Beach https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/newly-released-surveillance-video-shows-ex-condo-president-charged-with-arson-attempting-to-set-truck-on-fire-vandalizing-vehicles-in-south-beach/ Tue, 17 Oct 2023 02:55:22 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1371953 Officials have questions after a man was caught on camera trying to set a pickup truck on fire.

The suspect, 34-year-old Marc Maggisano, bonded out of jail Monday night and refused to speak to 7News.

Surveillance video from April 29, showed Maggisano at 363 Washington Ave. breaking car windows, slashing tires and attempting to light a truck on fire.

According to police, not only is Maggisano a resident of the building, he is also the former condominium association president.

“It’s terrifying,” said a resident in a phone call. “We know that he is capable of committing violent acts and threatening.”

Neighbors said that Maggisano is a menace, a wanna-be fire-starter and a criminal vandal who has a vendetta against his neighbors.

“Attempted first-degree arson,” a judge said

From the surveillance video exclusively obtained by 7News, he tried to set the truck on fire by lighting and stuffing a piece of cloth into it’s gas tank.

Police arrested Maggisano on Sunday for the several acts caught on video, as well as other offenses.

“You’re charged with written threats to kill or do bodily injury,” a judge said.

Maggisano is also accused of texting threats to one of his fellow condo owners.

The texts read, “die and die slow [expletive], “I’m goin [to make] sure you’re dead within 48 hours,” “I’m going to cut you opn tmrw” and “I will murder you shortly.”

“I guess a threat was made to a board of director,” the judge said.

“Unfortunately, we do have videos of him coming back to the condo when he wasn’t supposed to be there, and that is our biggest concern,” said Hector Villamar, an attorney.

The attorney for the building’s board of directors said there was an apparent agreement between the ousted ex-condo president and his neighbors to stay away, but he allegedly returned on Sunday.

7News took video of Maggisano’s car, which was parked outside the building.

Maggisano’s own attorney seemed to lay down the law for his troubled client during his Miami-Dade bond court session.

“He knows not to go back to this building,” Justin Beckham said. “His father is an attorney in Canada, contacted my office, and I’m making it very clear to him as well, that his biggest job in life right now is not ever going anywhere near that condo again.”

Maggisano was charged with first-degree arson and criminal mischief.

Jill Biden arrives in South Florida ahead of Cancer Survivorship Summit speech, Space Force base visit https://wsvn.com/news/politics/jill-biden-arrives-in-south-florida-ahead-of-cancer-survivorship-summit-speech-space-force-base-visit/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 00:17:18 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1371558 First Lady Dr. Jill Biden arrived in South Florida on Sunday night, preparing for a significant event set to take place Monday morning. She will be the keynote speaker at the Cancer Survivorship Summit held at Nova Southeastern University in Davie.

The Cancer Survivorship Summit holds personal significance for the first lady and President Joe Biden, who have made it their mission to combat cancer after the loss of their son, Beau, to an aggressive brain tumor in 2015.

“In February, the President and I reignited the Cancer Moonshot with a bold ambition to build a world where the word cancer forever loses its power,” said Dr. Biden.

In her address at the summit, the first lady is expected to emphasize the importance of unity in the fight against cancer.

“We know this – cancer does not discriminate, red and blue,” she expressed. “It doesn’t care if you’re a Republican or a Democrat. Beating cancer is something we can do together, and that’s why I’m here today.”

Joining Dr. Biden at this all-day event is Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz, herself a breast cancer survivor. The summit will focus on life after diagnosis, providing invaluable local resources and support services.

Dr. Biden will later visit military families at Patrick Space Force Base near Cape Canaveral.
