The county is partnering with the Bissell Pet Foundation for its “Empty the Shelters: Holiday Hope Event,” which began Monday and runs through Dec. 15.

For two weeks, the foundation will cover all adoption fees, though the county’s standard $25 pet registration fee still applies.

“The need for adoptions among shelter dogs and cats remains significant. ‘Empty the Shelters’ allows us to remove financial barriers while highlighting the incredible pets waiting patiently for a second chance,” said Broward County Animal Care Director Doug Brightwell.

Brightwell said each adoption creates space for another animal in crisis and helps strengthen the community.

All adopted pets come spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and ready to go home the same day.

The shelter said that staff will assist families in finding the right match, whether they’re seeking a laid-back companion or an active pet.

3 killed, 1 injured after boat capsizes on Caloosahatchee River https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/3-killed-1-injured-after-boat-capsizes-on-caloosahatchee-river/ Sun, 30 Nov 2025 22:27:22 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1646731 FORT MYERS, Fla. (WSVN) — Three people were killed and another was injured after a 39-foot speedboat capsized in the Caloosahatchee River, authorities said.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers said they could not confirm what caused the vessel to overturn on Saturday, but said windy conditions may have played a role.

A witness who recorded video of the aftermath said he saw the boat racing moments before it flipped.

“Yes, I just so happened to look out the window. I looked — those boats are racing — and then as soon as everybody looked, the boat was upside down,” he said.

The witness said he was on the opposite side of the river when he noticed the boat speeding.

“He was going real fast for that to happen,” he said. “It was up in the air for probably a good three, four seconds. I saw a crash, all the water was just all over the place. It was pretty wild.”

Additional witnesses shared video showing the vessel overturned in the water. Footage from shore captured first responders surrounding the Cape Coral Yacht Club.

Three people were rushed to a hospital, where two were pronounced dead, officials said. The body of the fourth person on board was recovered Sunday afternoon.

FWC continues to investigate the incident.

The Christmas tree buying season is in full swing. Prices are changing for the better — and worse https://wsvn.com/news/us-world/the-christmas-tree-buying-season-is-in-full-swing-prices-are-changing-for-the-better-and-worse/ Fri, 28 Nov 2025 15:27:10 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1646336 The demand for Christmas trees is as high as ever this time of year, but prices might be different depending on whether you’re looking for real or artificial trees.

From candy land confections to ’90s nostalgia, Christmas tree decor is taking over TikTok. Searches for “Christmas tree decor” are up 1,000% in just a few weeks.

With supply steady, 84% of Christmas tree growers said they don’t plan on raising wholesale prices. In fact, some may even lower them.

“When you have the large supply that we have right now, you need to get the trees harvested and sold. We can’t leave them in the ground forever,” a tree growing expert said.

Eighty-seven percent of artificial Christmas trees, ornaments, and decorations came from China last year. The American Christmas Tree Association expects artificial tree prices to be 10% to 20% higher. A $299 tree in 2024 could go as high as $359 this year, in 2025.

Tree farmers like the Joneses in Shelton, Connecticut are optimistic their real trees can meet Americans’ needs.

“Anyone who wants to get a beautiful, real, freshly grown Christmas tree, they’ll be able to find it — not just where we are in the Northeast, but all across the country,” Jamie Jones of Jones Family Farms said.

The average Christmas trees are going to be about the same as last year: about $80 to $100. Artificial trees, however, might cost about 10% to 20% higher because of tariffs.

US cruise passenger reported missing after disembarking in St. Maarten; ship returns to Port Everglades https://wsvn.com/news/us-world/us-cruise-passenger-reported-missing-after-disembarking-in-st-maarten-ship-returns-to-port-everglades/ Thu, 27 Nov 2025 15:23:32 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1646099 Authorities in St. Maarten intensified their search for a U.S. citizen, more than a week after she vanished after leaving a cruise ship that sailed from Port Everglades.

Police said 55-year-old Ann Evans was a guest aboard Holland America’s MS Rotterdam, which left Port Everglades on Nov. 16 and docked in Port St. Maarten on Nov. 20.

Evans disembarked around 10 a.m. for an organized island tour and stepped off the tour bus in Marigot, on the French side of the island, but never returned to the bus or the ship.

The Rotterdam returned to Port Everglades on Friday morning.

7News cameras captured passengers disembarking from the ship. Some who spoke with 7News were unaware about Evans’ disppearance.

“Oh, my God, that’s shocking, shocking,” said passenger Sarah O’Brien. “You hear these stories, but I didn’t think it would be this cruise ship. We had no idea anything was going on.”

“We were supposed to leave the Port of St. Maarten [at] like 5:30, and we didn’t leave, and we waited and waited and waited,” said passenger Renee Shepler. “We did hear we were waiting for one passenger, and finally — probably two and a half, three hours later — we finally left.”

The Police Force of Sint Maarten (KPSM) said Evans was reported missing after she failed to return to the vessel.

Officers on both the Dutch and French sides of the island have launched a joint search.

Investigators said they have reason to believe a woman matching Evans’ description checked into a hotel on the French side of the island using her passport and may have been seen nearby.

KPSM has asked the French Gendarmerie to help verify that information.

As of Friday afternoon, police have yet to make contact with Evans. They urge anyone who may have seen her to contact them.

Ceuise passengers, meanwhile, remain in shock.

“We never heard an announcement like that, and non of the crew ever mentioned it,” said passenger Cindy O’Donnell. “This is shocking; I’m very surprised.”

Evans’ disappearance comes at a time when safety on cruise ships is in the spotlight. In an unrelated case, 7News continues to follow the death of 18-year-old Anna Kepner, a high school senior from Titusville, Florida, who was found dead aboard the Carnival Horizon after it left PortMiami.

Authorities have ruled Kepner’s death a homicide. Her 16-year-old stepbrother is considered a suspect.

In a statement issued Friday, a spokesperson with Holland America wrote, “We notified local authorities [about Evans’ disappearance] immediately and we are working closely with them to confirm the guest’s whereabouts.”

KPSM said Evans is encouraged to contact her family or authorities if she sees the alert.

Molly the loggerhead released to sea after months-long recovery at Turtle Hospital https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/molly-the-loggerhead-released-to-sea-after-months-long-recovery-at-turtle-hospital/ Thu, 27 Nov 2025 15:12:42 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1646066 It was home sweet home for a beloved sea turtle that was released after months of recovery in the Florida Keys.

Molly the loggerhead finally returned to the water from a beach in Key West on Tuesday.

Three months ago, the marine reptile was found tangled in a crab trap line, covered in barnacles and suffering from a massive tumor. Her recovery did not seem possible, but vets say she refused to give up.

“When Molly was admitted to Turtle Hospital, her blood levels were critically low, that ginormous tumor was oozing blood, so it was a very risky surgery,” said Bette Zirkelbach, the manager of The Turtle Hospital. “We did the risky surgery. The veterinary team were able to remove that tumor. Once that tumor was removed, Molly started getting stronger every day, and her resilience was amazing.”

The tumor was the largest ever recorded on a sea turtle, making Molly’s recovery all the more miraculous. Before her release, she was fitted with a tracking tag so researchers can get data on the movement of loggerhead turtles.

Bodycam footage shows UM grad student hitting Miami Beach Police officer with scooter https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/bodycam-footage-shows-um-grad-student-hitting-miami-beach-police-officer-with-scooter/ Wed, 26 Nov 2025 17:40:57 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1645814 Newly released body camera footage shows the moments when a University of Miami graduate student slammed into a Miami Beach police officer and took off.

According to Miami Beach Police, the impact knocked the officer to the ground and set off a dangerous pursuit that led to the arrest of 29-year-old Noah Aloush.

Detectives said Aloush, who is also a U.S. Marine veteran, was riding an electric scooter along the beachwalk near 71st Street, where e-scooting is not allowed, on Nov. 1.

Miami Beach Police Officer Julio Blanco tried to stop Aloush, who’s known for doing scooter stunts on social media.

“Striking me, knocking me to the ground and injuring my right elbow,” Blanco said in court. “When I was on the ground, I looked at him, he saw me, and instead of rendering aid, he decided to jump back on and flee.”

Investigators said Aloush ran from police until he hit a dead end at 77th and Bayside Lane, lost control of the scooter, and fell. He was taken into custody moments later.

7News caught up with Aloush after he bonded out of jail but he did not comment on the arrest.

Aloush faces multiple charges, including running from the police, reckless driving and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. He was released on bond on Nov. 19.

Jury begins deliberations in Megan Thee Stallion’s defamation case https://wsvn.com/entertainment/jury-begins-deliberations-in-megan-thee-stallions-defamation-case/ Wed, 26 Nov 2025 15:09:07 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1645725 The jury in rapper Megan Thee Stallion’s defamation case against a blogger has begun deliberations after the defense and prosecution rested.

The lawsuit claims Milagro Cooper, a social media influencer also known as Milagro Gramz, posted false and harmful statements about her online.

Wednesday morning, 7News cameras captured Megan as she walked into the federal courthouse in downtown Miami.

She mostly remained quiet outside the building, but she did briefly respond when a photographer spoke to her.

“How are you holding up through all of this?” asked the photographer.

“I’m doing pretty good,” said Megan.

The Grammy winner, 30, is claiming defamation, invasion of privacy, emotional distress and the promotion of an deepfake porn video of the rapper generated with artificial intelligence.

In court, Megan testified that the AI-altered video cost her multiple brand deals, some worth more than a million dollars each.

The case is also one of the first to test Florida’s new deepfake law, which allows victims to sue over AI-generated explicit content shared without consent.

Another important question raised in court is whether Cooper qualifies as media under Florida state law. If so, Megan’s claim could be dismissed.

Megan Thee Stallion, whose legal name is Megan Pete, alleges Cooper participated in targeted social media campaign to harass, intimidate and defame her alongside fellow rapper Daystar Peterson, better known as Tory Lanez.

Lanez was found guilty of shooting Megan in a separate trial back in 2020. He is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence.

Ahead of the trial, Lanez and his lawyer were held in contempt for refusing to answer questions in a deposition.

The rapper is seeking unknown damages. Her reputation and possibly a new AI legal standard are now in the hands of a jury.

The jury is expected to reconvene on Monday to continue deliberations.

Speaking with 7News, one of the victims said he still doesn’t know why their neighbor, Angelo Garcia, shot them.

According to City of Miami Police, the shooting took place along the 900 block of Southwest 12th Avenue in the early morning hours of Oct. 24.

Investigators said Garcia, a man with a lengthy criminal history, shot at the victims at his neighbor’s duplex. The 38-year-old is being charged with multiple counts of attempted murder and remains in jail without bond.

The family at the home where the gunfire erupted had just celebrated their mother’s 75th birthday when, they said, the suspect became angry and started shooting.

7News spoke with one of the victims after he was released from the hospital.

“The worst time of my life,” the victim said.

The 53-year-old victim, who asked not to be identified, said he has no idea why Garcia would target them.

The man described the injuries he suffered after he was shot, saying the bullet struck him from behind.

“It was from the back to the front,” he said.

The victim said Garcia had come to the home, asking about a car that was parked out in front of the home.

His 75-year-old mother and one of his friends were also struck by gunfire.

Miraculously, everyone survived.

Police later found Garcia hiding out in a hotel in West Miami-Dade.

Beloved sand sculpture festival returns to Tampa Bay after 2-year hiatus https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/beloved-sand-sculpture-festival-returns-to-tampa-bay-after-2-year-hiatus/ Tue, 25 Nov 2025 13:43:31 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1645331 TREASURE ISLAND, Fla. (WSVN) — After a two-year hiatus, a beloved beach event has returned to the Tampa Bay area.

The popular sand sculpture festival Sanding Ovations took place on Treasure Island, Thursday through Sunday.

The event was canceled after hurricanes Helene and Milton impacted the area. Now, spectators get to enjoy the works of art like never before.

“It’s been a challenging year for all of us at the city, and then for all our people here, our residents, our businesses, and so to bring this event back, it was a challenge even to get some sponsors, because they’re all struggling,” said Treasure Island spokesperson Jason Beisel.

Dan Doubleday is an organizer of Sanding Ovations.

“It’s such a financial boost before Christmas that, you know, it’s become a very important thing to this island,” he said.

“It’s been hard,” said local vendor Sherri Evans. “To see everybody just having fun and enjoying and coming to the beach, and the weather has been amazing.”

Organizers plan to hold the festival for an encore weekend after Thanksgiving.

Boca Raton man arrested after deputies find malnourished, injured horses in ‘deplorable’ conditions, authorities say https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/boca-raton-man-arrested-after-deputies-find-malnourished-injured-horses-in-deplorable-conditions-authorities-say/ Mon, 24 Nov 2025 15:00:52 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1644933 A Boca Raton-area man was arrested after Palm Beach County sheriff’s detectives found several malnourished and injured horses living in what they described as deplorable and unsanitary conditions.

The investigation began Oct. 28, when deputies received a complaint that multiple horses on a property in the 12200 block of 200th Street South appeared severely underweight or hurt.

Detectives executed search warrants the next day and found ten horses in poor condition, several of them severely malnourished or suffering untreated injuries, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said.

Eight of the horses were secured and transported to Animal Care and Control for emergency veterinary treatment.

Two others could not be captured.

According to PBSO, equine veterinarians determined all eight seized horses suffered from long-term neglect, including malnutrition, dehydration, dental disease, overgrown hooves, rain rot, untreated wounds and other health issues.

One horse had a large, maggot-infested wound that required surgery, according to the sheriff’s office.

Detectives said the evidence established probable cause to charge the owner, James Marinakis, with eight counts of animal cruelty and neglect.

Marinakis was arrested Thursday on five counts of unlawful abandonment or confinement of an animal and three counts of aggravated animal cruelty.

Artist provides insight, background on iconic FIFA World Cup 2026 Miami poster https://wsvn.com/sports/artist-provides-insight-background-on-iconic-fifa-world-cup-2026-miami-poster/ Mon, 24 Nov 2025 04:09:34 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1644795 With the kickoff inching closer, 7News is getting a closer look at the artist behind the iconic FIFA Miami piece that was unveiled in Wynwood earlier this year.

The official FIFA World Cup 26 Miami host city poster captures the essence of Miami’s dynamic culture and community.

Artist Rubem Robierb, who is a part time South Florida resident, said he used some kickin’ creativity to fit all of South Florida’s magic into one frame.

“As an artist, it’s a huge honor to represent the City of Miami. It’s such a global stage,” he said.

Robierb said the poster showcases Miami as a city where art, culture, and futbol unite in a bold and diverse celebration.

“An image that everyone from all over the world, as soon as they see the image, they will immediately relate to Miami, and that’s what we did,” he said.

The artist said that making the poster was a bit of a challenge, as he tried to fit all that makes the city special into one artwork. But he believes the final product manages to do that very well.

“As an artist, it was really special that opportunity to do that poster because representing the City of Miami in such a global stage and connecting with such a big audience is a blessing for us, as an artist, because you are not close just in the art world, but you bring your art to everyone,” said Robierb.

He gave 7News a deep dive into what each part of the poster represents.

For example, the ball represents Miami as a cultural melting pot with every neighborhood represented. The background, including the crowd on the beach, depicts people welcoming those from around the world.

But he said the highlight of it all was the flamingo.

“For me, it’s the most unofficial symbol of Miami because people from all over the world relate flamingos with Miami, and I want to make the flamingo really fun, really playful, and that’s why I picture the flamingo as a soccer player,” said Robierb.

He said he put his own finishing touches on the poster, adding a splash of glitter to top it off.

Since its unveiling, the artist says he’s happy about what he’s heard about the poster and the opportunity to connect with people around the world.

“Me and FIFA Miami, we are really happy about the feedback we got from the poster, because we got to connect with people all over the world. Here in Miami, everyone feels represented, everyone. If you’re from Hialeah or from South Beach or from Coconut Grove, you will see yourself here in the poster because you know what represents you,” said Robierb.

The poster is one of 16 distinctive posters representing each host city in next year’s World Cup.

It’s the first time in World Cup history that each host city is commemorated with its own bespoke artwork.

Grandmother of 18-year-old found dead on cruise ship says FBI told her cause of death was asphyxiation https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/grandmother-of-18-year-old-found-dead-on-cruise-says-fbi-told-her-cause-of-death-was-asphyxiation/ Mon, 24 Nov 2025 03:37:25 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1644790 The grandmother of the Florida-born cheerleader who tragically lost her life at sea is sharing new details about what the FBI told the family about her granddaughter’s death.

Barbara Kepner told ABC’s Good Morning America that 18-year-old Anna Kepner‘s cause of death was asphyxiation, caused by an arm across her neck.

“The FBI contacted my son and family and told us her cause of death. Her cause of death was asphyxiation. They said when they took her body to the medical examiner’s office, it was in perfect condition,” said Barbara.

Authorities said a housekeeper discovered Anna’s body under a bed, wrapped in a blanket and covered by blankets, on board a Carnival cruise ship earlier this month. Sources said she died of asphyxiation caused by an arm across her neck.

Her body was removed from the ship after it docked in PortMiami, Nov. 8. prompting an FBI investigation.

According to court documents, Anna’s 16-year-old stepbrother, who shared a cabin with her and another sibling, is considered a suspect in the case.

Anna’s stepmother, Shauntel Hudson, appeared virtually in a Florida family court with her ex-husband in an unrelated custody matter. The investigation came up during the hearing.

“[Shauntel’s son] is a suspect in the death of the stepchild, an 18-year-old [step]daughter, that was in the same room,” said the ex-husband’s attorney.

A court filing in the unrelated family court matter noted the stepbrother could face charges. As of Monday morning, no charges had been filed.

“I can’t accuse him because I don’t know what happened in that room but the summation would be that he did something,” said Barbara. “Whatever happened in that room, the only person responsible is the person that was in the room with Anna.”

Josh Tew, Anna’s ex-boyfriend, said he planned to go on the cruise with Anna and her family, until the two broke up several months ago.

“She complained about him being uncomfortable, or her being uncomfortable around him,” he said.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing. With no charges filed and no arrests made, Tew and his family are hoping they’ll see justice for Anna.

“I’m praying and hoping that this will come out, so that they will have a solid case and justice will be done for why she’s not with us today,” said Jim Tew, Josh’s uncle.

“Good Morning America,” on ABC Miami, Channel 18, aired the full interview with Anna’s grandmother, Monday morning.
